A little extra time may help get it back to tasting semi-normal

The Pub / The best copliment I've ever gotten
« on: May 30, 2013, 06:41:22 PM »
I have a 20 year old daughter. She is in college and has had a series of terrible boyfriends (drugs, crime, etc). About a year ago she started dating a new guy. We were skeptical, but her sister claimed he was "a really nice guy". We met him very briefly about a month ago, and then yesterday we took them both to lunch, just to get to know him a little better. This kid is not exactly like me, but he's real close. Light hair, light skin, just like me. Easy going, doesn't say much, just like me (especially at 21). And, he brews his own beer! Just like me. Apparently his family lives close to the campus so he can get there a lot. His dad brews too and they have a yard full of hops. We were laughing about it the entire ride back home. I'm sure it won't last forever, but I'm glad she is finding out what a normal, decent boyfriend is like. And she gets free beer!

I like their IPA's a lot, but Pumpking was way to sweet for me. Good pumpkin flavor tho.

To me Bud is always just too sweet. I don't know if that's the acetaldehyde or not.

I was 205 when I started brewing. Now I'm 220. That was seven years ago so I just blame it on getting older and having slower metabolism. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Got some of this from our local brewery for Christmas, and wow, I really love it. I've tried a few Belgian beers before but nothing that really made me want to brew 5 gallons. Until now.

Any great commercial examples I should try before jumping in and brewing a batch?

This stuff is perfect for a cold, stormy, winter night in front of the fire, like tonight.

I have a hard time buying beer. Period.

Halfway through a 10 gal batch of homegrown Cascade/Chinook ale. Good brew for the holidays, but I got a hankering for some stout now that the cold weather is here.

I always had good luck with the NB kits too. Really good stuff. And just to say it again: skip the secondary.

Thanks. Great info.

Interesting that they ferment CA yeast at 68. I always thought it worked better much lower. I may give this a try.

Thanks for the tip. I found some of that powdered stuff. I just hope I have some plant left by Saturday when I have time to go buy it!

General Homebrew Discussion / Stink bugs killing my hops
« on: August 13, 2012, 05:21:51 PM »
Noticed yesterday that one section of hops on one of my plants were starting to turn brown. Seemed a little early for harvest so I though I'd wait another day or so. I checked on them tonight and they were almost totally brown and covered by about a hundred of these little pests. Spayed some bug killer on them which should help, but now I'm wondering if I should take a chance and harvest early to get my hops before they do. I think I'd rather have some less bitter hops than none at all. Also, I don't want to spray bug killer on the whole plant. Probably not something I want in my beer.
I've never had any bugs attack my hops before. It is crazy.

Ingredients / Re: Sanitizing Homegrown Hops
« on: August 09, 2012, 05:49:52 PM »
You don't need to sanitize them. Your beer will be fine. Many people, including myself, have made thousands of batches of beer with home grown hops, and have had no problems. At least not from the hops.

That is so cool. If I'm ever close by, I am stopping in for a drink.
