General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Experimental Brewing Forum

Didn't Mosher cover that in Radical Brewing. What about a brew book on How To Wright Another Brew Book, How To Be a Homebrewing Star and Cash In or How to Turn Hombrew Forum Time into Cash? Just a little fun guys.

Thanks Martin, much appreciated. The last supported version
upgrade narrowed the margin of error for my "crunchy" well water.

why are you having second thoughts? i haven't used them yet, but am planning to do so soon. have you used them and now having second thoughts or just read about them and not as excited?

Right.
You just need to brew a few batches using them and decide from there.  I'd never take the word of anyone on the internet on matters regarding taste, without trying the item in question myself.

Someone's words may well talk you out of something you might really like, or even taint your perception..

That is true, but I also take into account where the information is coming from and use my plausibility meter on everything. I.e. it's one piece, not the whole enchilada.

I have been getting vanilla beans from Beanilla.co for many years. They have great prices and the most plump and juicy beans I have ever used.

Great stats!

Homebrewing is alive and well.

Long live homebrewing; but, their is a difference between being alive and having a life. Years back I moved the brew frig from the garage to the basement. Then I switched the old 2 channel stereo to a home theater system. Then..... I spend a lot of time down their. On the plus side, my basement disables cell phones. Jolly good stuff.

I thought comet would/could add some complexity to my hoppy ales. I have a few house APAs
and two IPAs that I'm getting a little bored with, so I want to shake them up a bit.

Have any of you used Comet hops, what are your thoughts? I purchased a pound of 2012 whole and I'm now having second thoughts.

Allow your taste buds to guide your brewing, not a recipe; it's the craft in craft brewing.

All Grain Brewing / Re: Brun Water question

I don't want to turn this into a "which is better" discussion, but I will say that in my case not having to use internet to access a program is a big plus.  Anything that's online only is a deal breaker for me.

+10 I'm not a cloud fan. I trust my data and money in MY possession, not someone else's.

Classifieds / 4Sale Johnson A419 & Plate Chiller
« on: March 19, 2013, 03:40:46 AM »
I have a Johnson A419 digital controller and a 30 plate long plate chiller for sale. I'm asking $45 + shipping for the controller and $90 + shipping for the chiller. The chiller has garden hose and 1/2" hose barb fittings; I don't like threads on the wort side. Both unites are in like new condition. Pm me for a shipping quote or pics.

Equipment and Software / Re: PID autotune question
« on: March 13, 2013, 05:53:01 AM »
Make sure you start the auto-tune after you've got the flowrate adjusted and the water around mash temps.

+1 I BIAB and continuously recirculate with a direct fired kettle. Using water or wort when auto tuning is a mute issue, in my experience. I have helped others automate their rigs. On the other hand; flow rate and heat output (BTU) WILL have an affect. I use my PID w/RTD to heat the water to strike temp and then to maintain mash temp. I do try to set the burner to the same BTU setting each time, but I don't get too anal over it. The PID does correct/adjust a little. But it has not been a problem for me. YMMV

All Grain Brewing / Re: Mashing with Rye
« on: March 10, 2013, 12:19:14 PM »
The rye APA brewing this morning went well. I cracked the rye with a corona mill and then
toasted it at 350 F for 40 minutes; turning every 10 minutes. The recipe had 25% rye, so
I added a some rice hulls. I BIAB and continuously recirculate, so I could see that the wort
went clear about 18 minutes after doughing in; indicating conversion was progressing as
usual. I always taste my pH samples, it had a very nice subtle spicy/peppery flavor.
