General Homebrew Discussion / Simpsons Legal Battle Over Duff Beer- Simpsons' Vs. Colombian Brothers

      I've always been a huge fan of the Simpsons, and the Duffman was specifically one of my favorite characters.  Over the years, I have collected a bunch of Duff merchandise, and even dressed liked Duffman for Halloween one year.  So, when I saw this news story I couldn't resist talking about it to my blog.  It seems that two Colombian brothers (Alvaro and Oscar Ballesteros) have copied the logo and image of the fictitious brand, and starting selling the product without the consent of 20th Century Fox.  This has led to a legal battle over copy right infringement, and the right to sell the product.  The Ballesteros argue that it is not copyright infringement if it only existed in the fictional/cartoon world.  This case should be interesting to watch, and see if what side the courts take on this case.

General Homebrew Discussion / Wisconsin Homebrewing law.

I recently heard about the Wisconsin passing the law allow homebrewers to transport their brew outside their house.  I know there are other states that still have strict homebrew laws, but I'm not aware of the specifics.  Does anyone have any insight into which state laws to research, and/or help advocate.

General Homebrew Discussion / Using brewer's best conditioning tablets.

I used these for the first time last night on an English mild, and I sure they will work great.  However, the package didn't explain anything beyond the number to use for a desired carbonation level. (I used 3 per 12 oz bottle to get mild carbonation)  Is there a general rule of thumb when using these?  I didn't know whether it would be better to crush them first, shake the bottles a bit, or just leave them to break down naturally.  I'm interested to hear other people's opinions on this topic, and if it helps I have about 12 days for the to bottle condtion before an upcoming competition.

All Things Food / Anyone have any brew based Thanksgiving recipes they would like to share?

I want to start doing more projects combining my beers with food.  I figure Thanksgiving is a perfect time to start playing around with new ideas.  Does anybody have any recipes or suggestions for holiday dishes using homebrew. 

P.S.  My current brews available are a Oatmeal Milk Stout, a Coffee Stout, and a English IPA.

I thought this was pretty funny, so I figured I'd throw it up on the forum for anyone that's interested.



By the way, I tried to import the photo in, but I wasn't having much luck.  Do you have to have a certain type of file to upload a photo? (mod edit - no special file needed, just the url to the ".jpg" or ".gif" or ".png" file)

General Homebrew Discussion / Discovery Brewmaster's Canceled Because Of Threats From Big Beer

I don't if anybody has been following the this story, but it sounds as if Brewmaster's the Discovery Channel about the Dogfish Head Brewery was canceled due to Coor's putting pressure on the Discovery Channel.  It would appear that they threatened to stop advertising on their channel unless they cut the show.  I'm continually baffled at the lengths that "Big Beer" has gone to try to stop  craft beer from servicing their niche market.  It's starting to become a trend that big companies go out of their way to destroy small businesses that don't even pose a threat to them at all.  Gotta love capitalism.

Kegging and Bottling / My sister sent me some kegs to try and revive?

My sister gave me two kegs, that she made that she said were way over carbonated.  I think they must have gotten some bacteria is them.  She gave too me to see if I could save the beers. She said the beer was spraying out even after shwe release the CO2 pressure.  I going to have to play doctor and see if I can fix themlater this week.  Has anybody had to deal with similar problems?

General Homebrew Discussion / Released my first homebrewing video podcast.

     I finally gave up on trying to post my podcast through Youtube and went with Vimeo. (I don't even want to think back on how much time i wasted trying to get Youtube to work)  It's up and can be accessed through my blog at http://nickfilipow.blogspot.com/.  I pretty much did almost all the taping, editing, and content with no prior experience or planning, so I hope everyone likes it.  I'm still learning the software and and get used to being on camera, but at this point I'm just trying to get feedback so I can develope a formula.  Let me know what you think.

P.S.  I still do partial extract due to budget and location, would like to start do this with an all grain setup when my situation allows for it.

In the newest issue they had a bucket list for homebrewers, I was able to check a few off that list.  Looking to knock some more off the list here soon.  Next on my list is getting BJCP certified.  What's on the top of your list?

General Homebrew Discussion / Big Hurt Beer- Frank Thomas is getting a beer named after him.

I'm not sure what to think about this Frank Thomas was the reason I became a White Sox fan, but on the other hand I guessing this beer they are making might be one step short of ram's piss.  Has anyone heard anything else about this.  Also, if were going to start making beer for White Sox players, we need to get Stone working on a new version of Arrogant Bastard for Ozzie Guillen.

   Oatmeal- is it preferable to roast the oatmeal or use the preroasted oatmeal?  I'm going to start looking at doing an oatmeal stout , and in the past I have roasted the oatmeal in the oven, but I have also used preroasted in recipes before.  Has anybody Noticed a diffence between the methods.
