General Homebrew Discussion / APA...Great Flavor...Poor Aroma
« on: January 28, 2013, 03:57:38 AM »
That pretty much describes my latest APA.  It has been in the keg long enough now to have cleared, and the flavor is how I like it.  The aroma was never good though.  I could dry hop, but I'm afraid it would throw off the flavor.  In the recipe, there are 3oz of aroma hops at 5mins, and 1.5oz at 1min, so you'd think there would be some hop aroma, no?  Any ideas?

In terms of aroma, any negatives to dry hopping in primary?

Ingredients / Dry Hopping w/ Simcoe + Amarillo
« on: January 08, 2013, 12:50:39 PM »
If I dry hop with 1oz Simcoe, and 1oz Amarillo, will the Amarillo have a detectable presence given the pungency of the Simcoe?

Equipment and Software / Removing keg lube?

How do you remove keg lube from the cornie o-ring?  Also, from the inside top of the keg where the oring sits?

Ingredients / Spent Grain as Compost?
« on: October 08, 2012, 04:52:13 PM »
I want to throw my spent rain in my garden to decompose for next Spring when I grow these, among others:

I'm already scattering my spent hops, but was wondering about spent grain.

General Homebrew Discussion / Beer Faucet Covers
« on: September 21, 2012, 03:03:50 AM »
My LHBS sold me on buying 4 of those black, plastic faucet covers.  Are they really necessary?  It's not like I have flies buzzing in and out of my faucets.  It seems to me these covers will get far nastier than the faucets ever would uncovered.  I think I got sold...

Yeast and Fermentation / Brewcraft Yeast Nutrient
« on: September 04, 2012, 11:17:14 AM »
I ran out of my Wyeast nutrient, so I'm stuck with this Brewcraft nutrient.  How much for a 1L starter?  It says to use 1/2tsp per gallon, which would be practically nothing for my starter.  Anyone use this?

Yeast and Fermentation / Starter question...timing
« on: September 02, 2012, 01:52:42 AM »
I pitched a 1.5L ale starter Saturday morning.  I'm using a stir plate (first time).  Will it be ready to pitch Monday afternoon?  I've heard 12-18 hours.  Is this correct?  I was hoping to refrigerate it Sunday night to drop the yeast out of suspension, then pull it out again Monday morning to warm up before pitching.

Yeast and Fermentation / How old is this White Labs yeast?
« on: September 01, 2012, 01:18:00 PM »
This vial of Czech pils yeast says to use on or before Nov. 11, 2012.  So, how old is it?

The White Labs says their yeast has a 4 month shelf life.  Does this indicate that my vial is ~2 months old?

All Things Food / New Hottest Chile...Carolina Reaper?
« on: August 27, 2012, 01:13:04 PM »
I've been following the mad race that seems to be going on to develop the hottest chile.  I am currently growing the Trinidad Scorpion Butch T strain chile, the current Guinness Book record holder weighing in at ~1.4 million Scoville units.  But it looks like it is now being challenged by the Trinidad Morouga/Brain Strain chile, and now the Carolina Reaper.  Funnily, and perhaps, pathetically, there is some dissension among certain growers.  Accusations of "numbers fudging", "slightly changing the chile's name"...are some of the charges waged by certain Aussie growers.  Oh well.  Here's a couple of vids concerning the Carolina Reaper.  I'll be ordering some of these seeds for sure.

Equipment and Software / Promash help needed...Evaporation rate
« on: August 13, 2012, 03:06:05 AM »
I can't seem to change the Evaporation Rate.  I've been in the System Settings, but can't seem to figure it out.  I want the Evaporation Rate to be 2 gallons per hour.  This is how it currently looks:

Pre-Boil Amounts
----------------

Evaporation Rate:      15.00    Percent Per Hour
Pre-Boil Wort Size:    8.24    Gal
Pre-Boil Gravity:      1.048    SG          11.87  Plato

Equipment and Software / 7 micron filter system
« on: August 10, 2012, 05:05:19 PM »
I've listened to Tasty McDole discuss his 7 micron filter system, and his reasons for using it.  Without getting into the pros and cons of such a system, who on this forum uses one?  Where did you buy it?

All Grain Brewing / Decocting a Pils
« on: July 21, 2012, 01:53:50 AM »
I copied and saved Gordon's instructions for decocting a hefe in another thread, so I'm hoping he might help me out here, or anyone else for that matter.  I'd just like to know what the standard decoction temps/rests are for a German pils.  A Google search for "decocting a pils" resulted in mainly Bohemian pils.  Maybe decocting a German pils is not that common?

Commercial Beer Reviews / Roggenbier?
« on: July 21, 2012, 01:49:19 AM »
Are there any commercial roggenbiers available in the U.S.?  I've never had one, but would like to try one, preferably imported.

General Homebrew Discussion / 5.2 PH Mash Stabilizer??
« on: July 19, 2012, 03:19:42 PM »
My LHBS owner swears by this stuff.  Doesn't seem possible that you could have a universal water treatment for all mashes, guaranteed to bring them to 5.2 PH.  What do you guys know about this product?
