So if I add something that tastes bitter to a solution, that solution will not taste bitter? I'm not sure I understand how that can happen. A hop pellet does not isomerize in my mouth, but it tastes very bitter

Hops taste bitter, whether they are isomerized or not. Eat a pellet and you'll know. So you may not add any IBU's doing FWH with no boil, but if you add hops you are adding bitterness
You won't need much for a Berliner anyway. Just off the top of my head, I'd add 1oz of a Magnum (or something neutral) to the FWH, should be good

Who cares if you're going to enter it in competition or not, that's why there's a Belgian speciality category.
I made a dark Saison with midnight wheat, carafa, chocolate rye & pale chocolate....it was awesome.....and still in the Saison realm

Have you ever had a "cham-pliny"? O'Briens pub in San Diego does a blend of champagne and Pliny the elder. Surprisingly really, really good....... Back to topic.
I made a Munich Helles this Morning, 95% Pils 5% munich. 7.5 gallons of 1.038 wort, wanted to get a 1.046 beer. I decided to boil" harder" to drive out DMS.....well, I boiled too hard and ended with a 1.052 beer

AA% doesn't factor in for flavor or aroma. Similar weight is a good way to start, and you'll have to adjust from there

I used a bunch in an IPA and enjoyed them very much. I see them as a mix of cascade & williamette, leaning more on the williamette side. I'm a big fan of williamette, so I dig these hops

As I see it, "American India" pale makes as much sense as black India pale ale.
The acronym for India pale ale, IPA, has become it's own unique creature.

Last year in San Diego, my club (SNAFU), brought 27 kegs. 10 were used (not all kicked, but used) on club night and the hospitality suite kicked 8 kegs. Our hospitality suite was right after club night however

The orange carboy caps fit the better bottles. I use them.
Their is a blue handle made for lifting better bottles, it works but the handle leans against the airlock and that is kinda obnoxious
I usually just pick them up and support the bottom to prevent sucking sani back through the airlock.

« on: March 15, 2012, 05:53:02 PM »For the BJCP judges here, have you ever judged an AIPA that had too much, or too strong of a hop aroma? Is it even possible for an AIPA to have too much hop aroma, as far as comps are concerned?
I could see an argument if the aroma didn't feature American hops or hops that can be considered/confused for American (like some New Zealand types)
Are you asking cause you were dinged for it, just curious?
