So TABC blocked a Texas NHC? Happy to see we're getting close, but sad at our backwards alcohol laws. If its ok to post, anyone in Texas that wants to support changing these laws should look into Open the Taps. They're getting some things done in Austin and also throw some good beer/membership parties.

Two pounds pork belly- pancetta stresa started 6/29/12. Can't wait to cut into this one. I could do it now but will wait another week. Used the recipe from Charcuterie. I just couldn't bring myself to hang it at ambient temp though. Co-opted the kegerator for the drying!

Cost me about $5. Try buying it for that price at the store.

Euge,

Where are you getting pork belly for <$3/lb? Can't find it in Dallas for anything less than $4.

Boy, my Red Sox sure left a brown skidmark on the month of September.  Tonight should be interesting.  I think the Yankees are tanking it just to screw with the Sox.

I hope they make it in but with the pitching and defense right now, I doubt they will make it out of the divisional series.

If it helps, Ranger fans are all pulling for the Red Sox to hold on....Who wouldn't want them in the first round.

Back to back AL West Champs!

Time for tailgate. Serving my homebrew for first time on the large scale to about 50-60 people. Vienna lager and the house Kolsch. Hopefully no equipment failures.

I'll consider the season a success as long as the Pats beat the Dolphins, Jets, Colts, Steelers, and the other 10 teams they play this year.  ;)

I hope to make it to more than one game this year!

GO PATS!!!!

Dont they only play 9 more...Bills twice.  ;D

Cowboys all the way!

So, has anyone else been enjoying the free trial of MLB Extra Innings on DirecTV?

The slow motion and replay on the DVR are very cool.  It's amazing to me that the umps get it right so often -  in real time.  Plus you can blast past the adverts!  Althought the Dodgers bobblehead commercial is pretty funny/cool.

With HDTV you can see what the pitch is by reading the threads on the ball.  Amazing!

Gotta go.  Got a Giants - Dodgers game, called by Vin Scully no less, in the can, and it needs watchin'!

I loved it when I had it a few years back. Once I stepped up to season tickets to the Ranger's, I couldn't justify both expenses. Sadly, my D-TV box got fried yesterday and I have to miss the entire LAAA series since the replacement won't be here until Friday. 5 games up with a chance to make it 7 with a sweep. Given up 2 earned runs in past 5 games. Loving the Ranger's pitching right now.

I noticed a small gap between the freezer sides and the outer boards but are you sure that will be enough ventilation for it? Mine tends to get really warm on the outside at times. That'd be my only concern. Not trying to rain on a parade, it's a great looking build.

Didn't Rahr Brewing in Ft. Worth have a lot of beers in the top 50 last year? And this year not one.....hmmm. They have pretty much the same line-up this year. Wonder what changed...definitely interesting. ::)

Gotta agree there Euge!  8)

Philly is definitely a possibility for me. Just got back from a Baltimore/Philly trip and I definitely want to go back. Would be cool if they tie it in with Philly Beer Week too.

My main question, outside of where else to visit for special beer week events, is should I carry my handgun in downtown Philly?

Philly areas breweries to look for are Sly Fox, Yards and Nodding Head. You might also find Flying Fish (NJ) and some Dogfish Head oddities.

Good web sites:

Mid-Atlantic Brewing News (http://www.brewingnews.com/mid-atlantic/)

Philly Beer Week (http://www.phillybeerweek.org/)

The touristy areas of Philly are reasonably safe from violent crime, IME, although it's been a few years since I've visited. The hairy areas are/were West and North Philly and that's not where the bars or attractions are. Anyhow, most of the violent crime is between people who know each other, rather than random attacks on visitors.

I'm not a cop or a lawyer, but it just seems like common sense to research the local gun laws; perhaps talk with your department or the Philadelphia PD. Pennsylvania has some weird laws, so there might be oddities about carrying there. Presumably, professional police forums or the NRA web site will give better advice than you'll get here.

Given that you'll be going into bars, stadiums and other private property where they might have restrictions on carrying, my gut instinct is to leave the gun at home. If you "look like a cop" even out of uniform, I can't imagine anyone hassling you. In any case, your most valuable weapons when confronted with most crimes is common sense and a cell phone.

Thanks. Citizen's Bank Park has a no-carry rule unless you're on duty. I doubt my city will pay me overtime. I may end up parking the rental down near the ballpark and walking to the Liberty Bell during daylight hours that way i have less of a walk back to the car after the game.

And I've been breing for 5 years now and behind a desk for the last 2. I'm starting to lose that "cop" look.... 8)

To revive an old thread. My trip is in a week. Plan on hitting Monks for lunch. To my pleasant surprise, it's also Philly Beer Week next week. As I said earlier, we are going to a ballgame on the 9th. My main question, outside of where else to visit for special beer week events, is should I carry my handgun in downtown Philly? It's a pain in the ass to fly with it, but I'm current law enforcement so I can carry anywhere. We'd be walking from the ballpark after the game back to our car, which will probably be left at some all-day parking lot closer to the Liberty Bell and Monks.

If you're looking for a way to control the smoke escaping, you really can't go wrong w/ the fireplace cord suggested here.  I'd suggest using temp resistant silicone as opposed to the fireplace cement though.  The fireplace stuff gets pretty brittle with all the moving around.

Good idea. I used the fireplace cement to try and shore up my side box smoker and within two smokes, it had fallen off. Still have plenty of rope so may hit up the hardware store for some high-temp silicone.

Missing the AL MVP for two weeks and the AL Rookie of Year and saves leader for same time. No worries on the Ranger front. The A's offense is a joke and the Angel's offense is old. Both their pitching staffs, however, scare me. Especially they way our guys are pitching.

If you're into baseball Citizen's Bank Park is a fabulous place, plus you can check out the Fightin' Phils.

Most of that Fightin' being in the stands, right?  :)

Not in Philly.  ;)

Ha. Our plan was to heckle the crap out of Lee for chickening out of being a true ace, but have since decided against that. Now I'm just hoping I get to see Halladay.
