I think energy is always a function of fuel and oxygen. You have a lot of fuel and to little oxygen. I have a 10 psi regulator and everything works fine. Turn your fuel way down and open up the plate for more O2. Bottom picture, way to closed. Looks to me like the burner might be to high also. Tune it up in the dark, blue flame, just starting for yellow on the tips,,

Somebody smarter then me will step up,,,

Just been thru this. Did the 72 quart Coleman as that should be all I need. Kept having temperature problems on 5 gallon batches. Bought a 36 quart Coleman and all is good. The big one for heavy 5's and 10 gallon batches. The "little" for all of the rest. One extra cooler another $32 bucks. Pretty cheap in this hobby and a lot easier. More time and more headaches might of fixed it, but now the problem is gone. The problem was preheating the MT and the amount of liquor required.

Didn't really answer the 5 to 10 gallon question, but same principal.

Well, in the title you started out as a "Non-Mechanical Brewer". Guess you decided to take it up a notch. Now you've added electricity, pumps and hoses, not to mention $$$$'s. Should keep you entertained.

I think you need to spend more time thinking about weather. What do you want your day to be like. I grew up in Seattle, I know what it's weather is like. I know it rains, but it really doesn't matter till you get older. When young the outdoors is great. Now that I am older, I know what to hot is. I hate AC, I hate 100 degree days. I don't mind the rain if I am inside. Don't care how cold it gets at night, I am in bed. Care a bunch about where it gets during the day. Anyhow, after spending a ton of time thinking about it, I think the best year round weather in the US might be near El Cajon California. Great beer seen is a plus. (San Diego) This link will give you some more west cost weather data. Sorry, haven't found it for the East or Central America.

as for Europe, that's over the pole from the NW. Maybe even cheap out of Vancouver.

My choice might be Boulder, at least half of the year, then Tucson for the winters.

I was the steward for the Stouts at NHC. I was pretty impressed by those guys. But, I am easily impressed.

I'll start off by saying that I am probably not qualified to speak on this topic. I am a new brewer, but I did steward in the NHC and have been a steward in two competitions since then. So,, I don't see where the judges have an opportunity to straighten this out unless something is "glaringly" out of bounds. Maybe it can take place before the judges evaluate it. Maybe instead of entering in a category the contestant declares it meets the requirements of a category and/or notes exceptions for the judges. Then later, if busted, forefits ,

Maybe there is a statement for judges of + or- the standards ,,,

So I had to pour a glass of wine to think about this. If you left your freezer unplugged and put the probe inside, what would the temperature be ? If you come back with any number under 63 then I think you are expecting your freezer to be a heater. Not sure that works. Seems that even if you tell the freezer to shut off at 63 the coils and condenser are still cold. So if so, how about the light bulb in the paint can to heat it up and skip the freezer ?

Plan B, drop the setpoint way down and use it for lagers. Not sure you need a freezer for ale temps.

But if I knew what I was talking about I would probably be drinking homebrew.

and I might add. I was steward for a minBOS that had six entries. I looked up the scores of each entry while the judges discussed the merits. The first beer thrown out was the highest score. The battle for first and second took place between beers scored 37.3 and 37.6 , the second and third highest scores, if I remember right. Had a few beers afterwards.

It 's pretty easy to teach a dog to stay out of any area you don't want him in. Just keep him off the stairs and he'll never go up the stairs. I taught our two large dawgs to never leave the kitchen to the dinning/ living unless I called them. Then, "back to the kitchen" and they were gone. It's not dog training, it's owner training.

On the other hand, my son-in-law would put his dog outside and trained him to bark when he wanted back in. If you wanted to leave the dog outside he sat out there and barked. Dumb son in law.

The other thought is that it doesn't look like the weather will be real great next week. May be instead of some "wilderness" hikes you could do some exploring in Seattle that could cover some miles and give you some "hideouts" from the weather. Not "wilderness" but you could take the bus out to Golden Gardens and walk back on the Burke Gillman trail. Or how about walk from Redhook to Mac & Jacks on the Sammamish trails. If I remember right the U of W campus is the largest or one of the larges single campuses in the US.

The transit system is really pretty good for out and back. Not wilderness, but maybe drier and warmer.
