Got some of this from our local brewery for Christmas, and wow, I really love it. I've tried a few Belgian beers before but nothing that really made me want to brew 5 gallons. Until now.

Any great commercial examples I should try before jumping in and brewing a batch?

This stuff is perfect for a cold, stormy, winter night in front of the fire, like tonight.

General Homebrew Discussion / Stink bugs killing my hops
« on: August 13, 2012, 05:21:51 pm »
Noticed yesterday that one section of hops on one of my plants were starting to turn brown. Seemed a little early for harvest so I though I'd wait another day or so. I checked on them tonight and they were almost totally brown and covered by about a hundred of these little pests. Spayed some bug killer on them which should help, but now I'm wondering if I should take a chance and harvest early to get my hops before they do. I think I'd rather have some less bitter hops than none at all. Also, I don't want to spray bug killer on the whole plant. Probably not something I want in my beer.
I've never had any bugs attack my hops before. It is crazy.

General Homebrew Discussion / Why I brew
« on: February 29, 2012, 01:18:23 pm »
Went to a friends house over the weekend. He is a great guy, always telling me how good my beer is, even that it's better than what we can get at the local micro-brewery (ok I don't think it THAT good, they make some really nice stuff).

I brought some of my own and he had a selection of Sam Adams brews. We both had two glasses of my stout, and then had a glass of the Sam Adams stout.

As I was drinking it, I thought to myself "This is good, but mine is better."

Ingredients / Male hop plant
« on: July 18, 2011, 06:09:30 pm »
I have a second year east kent goldings plant that is growing just fine, but I'm pretty sure it's a male plant. No cones, but lots of bunches of flowerish buds.

What do I do with this thing?

Interesting article about why a lot of the micro brews are not in the windy city.

What is the preferred temp to ferment US-05 and S-04? I haven't used dried yeast in a long time.

I'm glad that you're happy and healthy and having fun, but next time I go on vacation could you please stay in the bucket where I put you? I really don't want to come home to a beer fridge full of glopy brown mess again.

Thanks,

Bruce

General Homebrew Discussion / Forced to buy beer
« on: July 06, 2010, 05:32:45 pm »
We moved in May. I pretty much moved the whole house myself, one mini-van trip at a time. I had no time for brewing, and I have now run out of beer. I have some in the fermenter, but it won't be ready for a little while. This is the first time I've actually had to buy beer sine 06.

It's a very strange feeling.

I'm off to the supermarket. Wish me luck.

General Homebrew Discussion / Things you should not do
« on: April 07, 2010, 07:16:36 am »
Do not take the lid off a bucket of beer that has been fermenting for a week, put your face about an inch away from the beer and deeply breath in the aroma.

Trust me on this one.
I think I hurt my nose and I got dizzy for a few seconds.
