I have used both the Ranco and the Johnson digital and both work well.

I tend to keep my house cool during the winter so my SOP is to use the fermwrap, a glass carboy, carboy cap with a thermowell and a digital temp controller.  It works great!

Sorry to hear that Marc, I'll raise a pint or two in memory of Nelson tonight.

Other Fermentables / Re: Fermentation Temperature for Mead

I've only used the sweet mead yeast on ciders.  From what I have heard this yeast is finicky and doesn't always produce consistent results.

When I lived on a farm I always took a trip out to the compost bins to pee.  Now that I live in town, I don't think my neighbors would appreciate it.

My spent grains always go into the compost bin.

Kegging and Bottling / Re: keg cleaning
« on: February 21, 2011, 07:02:57 am »
I usually wait until I have a few kegs and clean/sanitize them all at the same time with hot PBW and star san.  I may not be necessary, but I break down a keg after each use.  I would be pissed if I had an infected beer that could have been prevented by with a throrough cleaning.

I have a german pilsner and light american lager lagering now and will probably brew a dortmunder and helles for late summer.

With a forecast high of 50 degrees on Sunday you bet I'm brewing...an APA.

Boy , I must have done something wrong...when I made that recipe I didn't think it tasted anything like Bitburger.

I agree, it makes a nice pilsner, but not like Bitburger.  I've switched up the hops and adjusted sulfate levels and the last one is closer.

I've got a 36 and a 54 qt CE, both have performed exceptionally.

Just finished washing kegs, so I'll be kegging a german pilsner and light am. lager, then hopefully brewing an apa.  Trying out citra hops for the first time.

Oscar,

Bring it to the next meeting (Jan. 25th) and have some of the judges in the club taste/smell it.

All Grain Brewing / Re: Schematic

I'd have to agree with the consensus here - KISS.  My setup is pretty rudimentary (here's a pic http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=640758&l=10df47a663&id=1077800222).

It's nice to see someone else who uses saw horses in their brew setup.  ;D

Saw horses are great! I got a little fancy tho, and threw on a piece of plywood.  :D

The 4x4s under the cooler are a nice touch.   :D
