All Things Food / Re: brats

I like'em smoked for a few hours. Brats handle it pretty good if you start with raw sausage.

If they get braised in onion-n-beer a nice crusty roll is nice to have plus some kraut.

Like the recipe! Never thought to use home brew...

Let it get warmer by a few degrees and give it another week.

Lot's of fruitiness isn't an off-flavor. Might be undesirable to be sure but give the beer a chance to clean itself up. IME that initial aggressive right-out-of-the-fermenter esteryness tends to go away or diminish.

Kegging and Bottling / Re: Amount priming sugar to use
« on: March 27, 2010, 10:55:48 AM »
So I've been yielding less than 5 gallons out of the last 2 batches I've produced.  In the end I have
figured I just need to add more water during my mashing and sparging processes.  However, I now
have a 2-2.5 gallon batch of a belgian pale ale that is currently ready for bottling.

What I'm wondering is if I need to cut the amount of priming sugar solution I would use in half
since I have half of what the normal batch should be.  Wouldn't this help prevent exploding
bottles?  I figured if I used the amount of priming sugar for a 5  gallon batch it would be too much.

Thanks,

Correct!

Like extending the mash unless the enzymes were completely denatured. Don''t worry.

And I just bought me some Jumbo Brown's...

I'm gonna use 6 for Migas and the others get boiled.

But I love my ball valve!

You can keep it (as I have) with a barbed-fitting fitted on the BV to attach to the tubing.

When I went this route an appropriate washer was found at lowes- however, I only used one and it was on the inside.

If you have the original drain see if some tubing fits through it. It may be all you need instead of the "contraption".

New Belgium Ranger IPA. 70 IBU. 6.5 ABV. Very Hoppy with a slightly sweet finish. Balanced. Perfect.

You have to try at least one.

Equipment and Software / Re: Regulator won't seal...
« on: March 24, 2010, 10:55:20 AM »

...I try cranking on it as hard as I can... None of this works.

Anyone have any suggestions?  Before I shoot the thing?

Cranking down on it as hard as you can with/without a gasket will likely damage the seating surface.  :'( Bad idea. Be gentle but firm.

There should be a disk-like gasket with a small hole- not a built in one. You probably lost it when you removed the regulator. Try looking on the floor in the area you removed the regulator.

It could have stuck to the previous keg's seating surface. If you can't find it call/go to where you swapped and maybe they'll give you one.

Good luck

You can disassemble the QD's. There might be a little rubber in the "out" QD as well.

Kegging and Bottling / Re: leaks in kegs
« on: March 24, 2010, 10:20:21 AM »
You'll be fine. Test it under pressure with some starsan or soapy water. If there is a leak around the lid seal vent the keg and reseat. Minimal chance of contamination. Might try a little lube on the o-ring. Rinse that soapy water off first- starsan ok.

If it's a poppit you could try a little lube on it too until it can be replaced. I used a little olive oil recently and it retarded a leak or fixed it. Enough to kill the keg without further worries.

Found that many of my old cornies have lids that only fit well in such and such position. If you find this happening with yours try replacing the main o-ring. Good chance it'll fix the problem.
