Ooooh! Now that is interesting indeed!

Great idea. ++1

Yeah if it was labeled I'd feel more comfy about it. I really don't want any more 530. My long affair with Belgian styles is over. While I may do a little sumpin sumpin with a saison now and again I won't be brewing any more dubbels tripels or abbeys.

If it was 001 that would kickass.

i have several large water bottles that i can use and throw away.  i am just not sure if they will or will not be impermeable to oxygen.  is there an easy way to tell

They should have "PP, LDPE or HDPE" on the bottom. I would use HDPE for fermentation.

My guess is that they are "Polypropylene"

Other Fermentables / Cider ressurection?
« on: March 23, 2010, 11:36:35 AM »
I whipped up 20 gallons last year. Used the cold-pasteurized stuff. Not ideal for "cider" but it has made decent enough in the past.

Flash-forward eight months

Popped one in the kegerator last week. Mmmmm. Perfect clarity. But otherwise not all that special. :( Lackluster come to mind.

So I poured two cans of frozen concentrate (apple) and mixed it up some. Much better!

Ideas for the second keg?

Nothing wrong with a 1.030 beer. On the weak side and watery? Depends on perspective. Sure. Got ya a lawnmower beer. Drink one too many of these 2.6 -3.0 ABV babies and you might just find yourself drunk.

I'll be brewing several of these this Spring and Summer. ;)

Always found that a good thorough chill in ice-water makes them easy to peel not the age of the egg.

I've done them in the pressure cooker too. Raised up on a trivet they are steamed.

The 8% steel reserve wasn't bad, especially if someone presented it to you as a maibock.

Interesting...

How hot was the wort when you first measured it?  Hot liquids are thinner than cool ones.

Oh yes +1 !!

That can certainly throw things off. Buy a refractometer cheap and easy off ebay.

Yeast and Fermentation / Mystery yeast.

Found eight 8oz PET bottles of harvested yeast in a box in the back of my fridge. Been there since last summer? Could be WLP001 or it could be WLP530 but there's nothing to indicate what they are.

Is it even any good at this late date?!

Used the 530 extensively. Experimented with it several times in the lower ranges sub 65F. Didn't like results. Not at all. Keep it a little warmer LOL.

But it can and does happen.

Having learned through experimentation (code for the hard-way) it's better to get the brew off the yeast sooner than later.

That's funny.

My old cat would invariably find the most important thing in the room at the time and lay on it. Like a freshly starched shirt on the bed... ;D

I'd love to know what this guy's secret is.

All sorts of ideas going through my head. Doesn't the Widmer Brewery produce lagers in only a few days as well?
