...Another question.

So i dont think i need a 70 quart cooler quite yet.

So my question is this. I either want to do 5 gallon high gravity likr 8-12% brews so all i would need is atleast a 40 quart cooler right?

And would i be alright with a 20 dollar target cooler or do i "need" to have a cooler like a coleman extreme?

Ok i normally do 5 gallon bataches at around 6% i think i might try going higher on the abv but i saw this Cooler http://www.amazon.com/Coleman-70-Quart-Xtreme-Cooler-Blue/dp/B000G64I1A
Onsale on amazon does it matter it my mas isnt deep?
So would it matter if i had a small batch in a big cooler like this?

So I am trying to get into all grain.
So most likely i can find the answer to all my questions through reading other peoples post but to be honest i am lazy lol.

So should I go with a direct fire set up for mashing with a low btu burner and a pot with a screen flase bottom  and valve set-up?

Or a cooler mash tun set like http://www.midwestsupplies.com/single-infusion-mash-tun.html

And i have been looking at recipes i am interested in and they have set set temp like 120 degrees for 30 min then 30 min at 150 degrees and so forth. how do you do that and what is the point of doing that?

so I like red beers, or bloody beers what ever you want to call it a beer with tomator juive in it. And that gave me a idea could you use tomatoes or tomato juice in brewing up a brew?

if you can where and how can you use it?

So I am lost with reading my hydrometer i made a gallon batch of beer put it 6 pounds of light dme and a extra pound of corn sugar i took a initial reading and i got a reading of 1.070 does that mean i really have possibity of this beer being 9.3 abv if i read the chart right?

Would a refractometer be a good investment? At a quick glance how does one of those work? Are they better then a hydrometer?

I am asking this because in the past i just let it keep fermenting till it stops bubbling but i now want to be more accurate and have more consistancy.

That is a awesome way to get rid of it lol.

reminds me of a batch of rootbeer i made last year. I made it with champagne yeast and totally forgot about them until one exploded in the closet so we took all of them and were throwing them against the ground some exploded and sounded like dry ice bombs and the others took off like estes rockets. I have video

I did a bud clone a year ago that I bought from the store as a kit and one of the packages was rice solids or something like that I know there is a with to get sugars  from rice without mashina

Oh i figure your were kidding. I was not offened by it.

I got the recipe from 200 clone recipe book.

I coppied it almost to the t but i upped the malt amount and added extra corn sugar but it seems a little dark for what i was going for.

I will let you know how it turns out in a month  and i plan on subbing in rice or corn maybe even both and i will tell you how that goes to.

If anyone has flavor additive other then hops, malt, and specialty grains let me know

Yeah i was expecting for people to take a while to respond.

And to respond to one of the first messages. I am making this batch for my buddies birthday in june because he asked me to.

Kegging and carbonating my own urine would be easier but i dont think he would enjoy it.

I ended up going with...

6 punds of Extra-light DME
1.2 oz Tettanger hops for 60 min
.2 oz tettanger and saaz for the last 15 min
and bohemian lager yeast Wyeast 2124


So far it seems really dark I was thinking of cutting back 3 pounds of DME and subbing something like rice solids does anyone have any suggestions?

Does anyone have a good recipe for Mexican Cervesa. I am looking for something like dos equis, corona, and so forth.
I am looking to make this style for the summer.
