The Pub / Re: West Sixth vs Magic Hat
« on: May 22, 2013, 07:56:44 AM »
I believe the star in the west sixth logo is actually a compass rose and because the "6" is on the left side, it makes it the West side.

I agree that they are similar but I would never accidentally pick this up instead of Magic hat. If I did, I'd probably be better off and maybe that's why their worried.  :P

I would love to see one of these in action. I'm real curious to see how it deals with situations that raise my blood pressure like the 4 way stop where someone won't go or goes out of turn.

The Pub / Re: NTSB Recommends 0.05% BAC Limit
« on: May 16, 2013, 09:48:10 AM »
The NTSB can recommend away but each state would have to change their own laws.

yes but if the federal government puts their weight behind this, then the states will follow suit. Michigan just approved to extend the 0.08 limit this year. It was set to lapse this fall and revert back to the 0.10 law it used to be. If the state would have let it lapse, they would lose millions of dollars in federal funding. Money talks.

I haven't seen a 750 of Sophie here in years. It's all four packs now which I prefer anyways. It's funny that production has seemed to ramp up for them but I can't find sophie hardly anywhere. It's my wife's favorite beer and I buy it whenever I see it. I hear bourbon county will go year round now too.

I used to do exactly what the OP does. It worked for me for about a year until I decided to build a counterflow chiller. Of course in Michigan the water temp coming out of the ground rarely gets above 60 and in the winter is low 40s high 30s sometimes. As long as you keep the water moving on the outside of the pot, it will work relatively quick.

I agree with Louisville being the overall favorite. They are the most complete team there. I'm not worried about them yet. Cuse is going to give me enough to worry about.

I hear Kevin Ware is doing well after his surgery. Absolutely devastating injury and I wish him a full recovery.

Yeast and Fermentation / Re: Wyeast Old Ale alternatives
« on: March 29, 2013, 12:40:14 PM »
The Wyeast Old Ale yeast has a Brett strain in it, so whichever yeast you go with (I prefer 1469 myself), I would also consider pitching some Brett C in the secondary. That is, if you want to mimic the Wyeast Old Ale strain.

Ingredients / Re: simcoe, citra and amarillo

I have to be the old cantankerous guy here, as a couple of my favorite IPAs that I brew have additions at 45, 30 or both. Clones of Pliny, Union Jack, and Headhunter. The Headhunter from Steele's IPA book is now one I am doing often (of course I had to sub Mosaic for Simcoe).

I don't think it hurts anything but I don't think it helps much either. If you are brewing an IIPA you need to have loads of flame out and dry hops. Nuf said.

Even with the 45 and 30 minute additions, Pliny does have loads at flameout and dryhop. I have not done a side by side comparison of IPAs done with 30 and 45 additions to those who haven't with everything else being equal, but they keep doing it and it must be for a reason... Right?

Gotta be my IIPA I brewed last winter. Did a triangle tasting with Double Trouble and Hopslam and couldn't decide which I liked better.

The Pub / Re: Cats are not Hop Heads.
« on: March 25, 2013, 06:49:11 AM »
Random thing I found out brewing last night, my cat's hat hops.

Decided after a couple home brews to see what my pets thought of hop pellets. One sniff of a pellet and they would turn and run. I thought it was awfully funny.

Does anyone else know any random facts about pets and brewing?
I have to ask - was it Simcoe?  ;)

No it was Zues but the cat peed on it turning into Simcoe.

The Pub / Re: Any Lord of the Rings fans here?
« on: March 25, 2013, 06:47:51 AM »
My wife and I watched it this weekend. I'm a huge fan of the trilogy books and movies but never read the hobbit so I can't comment on the relationship between the book and the movie. As far as the movie goes, I thought it was worth a rent. I wasn't so keen on the fighting mountains but liked the movie overall. Kinda neat to see Saruman talking with Gandlalf, Galadriel, and Elrond telling him that Sauron has been defeated and cannot come back. Little foreshadowing there.
