Yeast and Fermentation / Re: Danstar Munich dry wheat beer yeast?
« on: November 20, 2009, 09:17:48 AM »
I must have gotten a couple bad packs of Munich a while back because neither would take.  Ended up pitching something else. Not sayin' they're all bad but sure seemed like it to me at the time.  I agree with the others.  I've had much better luck with liquid yeast, and really, most wheats are all about the yeast....

Congrats!  I guess I'll start listening to you! ;)
Ha, I wouldn't do that if I was me..  ???  The real clincher is we had two brew club members receive BOS in the Lager & Wine divisions, and a few others with ribbons as well.  I'm humbled by their accomplishments!  :)

General Homebrew Discussion / Nebraska State Fair Results
« on: November 18, 2009, 07:11:49 PM »
Finally received the score sheets from the Nebraska State Fair.  Out of 5 entries, one 1st, three 2nd's and one 3rd. 5 for 5!  Ironic part was I was enjoying a 23-Rye IPA when I opened the envelope. It was the 1st Place. 2nd's were a 13B-Sweet Stout, 14A-Classic English IPA and 14C-Imperial Pale.  3rd was a 10C-American Brown.  Floatin’ on cloud nine right now!!! ;D

Did he have to run it through a wine press to get the beer back out of the hops?  ;D  Good Gawd!

Kegging and Bottling / Re: New to Kegging
« on: November 17, 2009, 11:53:05 AM »
There is also the whole cleaning process to think about, which, luckily with the cornelius kegs, we have all the equipment we need.  When I first started kegging I watched a bunch of videos on YouTube.  I pretty much do Chris Knights process verbatim.

Kegging and Bottling / Re: Crash Cooling and Bottling
« on: November 17, 2009, 10:00:56 AM »
Use a "S" type air lock when crash cooling. They work in both directions.

+1 Just don't fill it too full.

+2, and fill it with Vodka JIC....

Couldn't you just fill it with something like GOOP?  A little masking or duct tape on both sides to hold the glue in the hole until it dried?

The Pub / Re: If you could travel around in a motorhome

We'd probably just visit family in... Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Virginia, Maryland, Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Arizona, Colorado, Oregon & Washington.  Probably drive through the rest of the lower 48 in the process.  Actually I'm trying to convince the wife to do this very thing, except with a 5th wheel.  She's not buyin' it. She says, "What are you going to do with all that crap?"  She's probably right. We'd have to tow a trailer behind the 5th wheel to haul all the brewing "crap".  :D

General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Starter's OG
« on: November 15, 2009, 04:48:51 PM »
In general, you'll get better yeast growth from a starter in the 1.020-1.035 range.  The easiest way to achive that is to use .75 oz. DME (by weight) for each cup of water in the starter.  You're not in serious trouble this time, but try to get that gravity down next time.

An even easier way is to go metric.  1 gram of DME for every 10 mL of water gets you right around 1.035.

Maybe on the other side of the pond, as that's what they grew up with.  I guess I'm just old school...   ;)

I think you'll enjoy the Three Hearted Ale!!!!

Two batches at once? Sort of.  I plan to do a partigyle next Saturday.  1st runnings will be a Strong Scotch Ale in the 1.090 range.  2nd runnings (with 5 more pounds of grains) will be a 70/- to 80/- Scottish Ale depending on the SG.  The Strong Scotch Ale boil will overlap the Scottish Ale for a half hour or so.  Started the Wyeast 1728 today.  I'll step it up to a gallon through out the week.  It'll be a big day for an' ol' fart like me  :o but the rewards should be worth it.

General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Stout or Porter
« on: November 15, 2009, 03:14:08 PM »
Well, this topic will probably be debated to its death but here's my rendition.  A stout is a porter, a stout porter.  The porter style died off some years ago and has made a come back recently.  Generally, but not always, a stout will have more roasted barley than a porter and some porters will have no roasted barley.  Alcohol strength isn't a gauge either because some porters are higher ABV than stouts.  It's a bloody mixed up mess..... :o
