Going Pro / Re: Homebrew Shop Statistics
« on: October 23, 2012, 10:02:46 AM »
I realize that this category is supposed to be reserved for brewers looking to go professional as an actual brewer, but I was unable to find a category for homebrew shop owner wannabees.  If there is a category that I overlooked, please move me or let me know where I should've posted.  Basically I am looking for information on where I can find statistics and analytical models on what I should look for in my area where I would like to open my homebrew store.  I have found some models on population derived statistics but I would like to locate the most up to date information to base my business plan on.  Mostly what I am looking for is information on (1) how many members are there in the AHA?  (2) What is the estimated percentage of homebrewers in the AHA versus the nation as a whole?  (3) What kind of population in my service area would be necessary to support a homebrew shop.  I live in an area devoid of homebrew shops and have a lot of great ideas on how one shoud be run but need some sort of basis to ground my business plan in.  Any help you guys have would be most helpful.

Hi there,

If you want to email me directly, I would be more than happy to share some of the information we have available for homebrew shops in-planning.

Cheers,

General Homebrew Discussion / Re: AHA Pub Discount Program
« on: July 31, 2012, 11:47:53 AM »
I know this is an old topic, but I found this idea to work well last week:
I took my tablet with me to a couple of pubs to catch up on emails and forums while having a beer or two, since I am living smart phone free.
When the waiter at each place didn't know about the AHA Pub Discount Program, I showed him the web page with his restaurant/pub and the discount offer.  Worked great.

We're working to increase awareness of participation, and make it easier for members to take advantage of these member deals. Expect to see big news for PDP in the next week.

Homebrew Clubs / AHA Web Banner for Homebrew Clubs
« on: July 18, 2012, 08:16:06 AM »
Greetings Homebrewers & Club Members!

Has your club ever considered hosting an AHA Web Banner on your club's website?

Show your support of the AHA while earning some extra cash for your club! More information here: http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/pages/grow-your-business/sell-aha-memberships

When club members click on your AHA Web Banner they are redirected to the AHA's online store. Any membership purchases are tracked online, so a one-, two-, three-year US, International, or Household memberships purchased by that click-through make money for your club.

For more information on how to get involved, email me at steve@brewersassociation.org.

Cheers!

I am moving to Chico this summer and while visiting houses this past week, I went out for dinner at the sierra nevada brewery tap room. I was shocked to learn that there was no discount for AHA members!!! The irony is when I first became a member it was because of a AHA membership rally I attended at the sierra nevada brewery in 2006. Anyone know why we do not have a discount there? Ken Grossman has been so supportive of homebrewers, I am a little surprised by this.

This will be changing. Expect an update in the coming weeks  ;)

Hi everyone,

I'll be your contact regarding PDP.

matiasek-   The reason why Sierra Nevada is not currently a Pub Discount Program participant is because we have yet to directly reach out to them about it. While we do make an effort to make all breweries informed of their ability to participate in the program, most of the time it involves direct contact from the AHA to successfully add a new participant to the program. (though it also helps to have AHA members ask too!)

I can certainly reach out to Ken and the SN team to see if we can get something going for the AHA members.

chesirecat-   As for those current participants that may be changing or not honoring offers, please let me know of those occurrences. Sometimes with employee turnover, or locations that may not get a lot of AHA member traffic, there can be a lack of communication resulting in errors like this. Fortunately, when AHA members let us know it can be fixed with a quick phone call or email.

If you have any other questions about PDP, please don't hesitate to email me at steve@brewersassociation.org.

Cheers!

Steve, I was recently at New Holland in MI and not knowing just asked. They gave me 1$ off my flight with no problem. I don't see them anywhere on the list, maybe they are ready to join if they aren't already.

Good to know. As of now, they are not participants in the program. I'll reach out and see if we can get them involved though.

Steve,

I notice from the list that Smuttynose in Portsmouth, NH has signed on but they are not listed in the directory search.  Are they a recent add-on?  What is the discount they provide?

Thanks.

Thanks for pointing that out! With some of the newer participants, we had not yet added them to the directory. I expect all listings to be available by the end of the week.

The Pub / Re: AHA Pub Discount
« on: March 06, 2012, 01:54:21 PM »
Thanks.  I guess I will take it as a sign that since there are no provinces on the list that no one in Canada participates or is aware of the program :(

Camerons Brewing in Oakville, ON is currently the only Canadian participant with the offer of 15% off merchandise, plus free tours & samples for AHA members.

I'd be happy to work with you, gmac, to get that changed!

The Pub / Re: AHA Pub Discount

I was at Shipyard Brewery in Portland, ME on Saturday for the tour and asked. The lady said they didn't participate but thought it was a great idea.

I just checked and apparently the Shipyard brewpub does participate.

Yes. The Shipyard Brewpub in Eliot, ME does offer 50% off appetizers to AHA members. They offer the same discount at all Sea Dog locations (Bangor, Topsham, South Portland), Federal Jack's Restaurant (Birthplace of Shipyard) and the Inn on Peaks Island. I'm not sure why they chose not to include the Brewery in Portland. Most likely because they do not serve food there so it does not fit the offer.

The Pub / Re: AHA Pub Discount
« on: March 06, 2012, 08:49:46 AM »
Don't know about Hawaii, but a lot of states don't allow discounting the alcohol.  Here, the discounts are just on the food portion of the bill so if they have no food, a discount might not be possible.

This is true. Several states prohibit the discounting of alcohol, however, this does not prevent a brewery/restaurant from participating in the program.

We try to encourage new participants to be as creative as the like in coming up with offers. They are not limited to "discounts" on alcohol. Offers can be made on anything from food, drink, merchandise, tours, mug clubs, special events..etc.

The Pub / Re: AHA Pub Discount
« on: March 06, 2012, 08:46:26 AM »
How does one go about getting their local brewery on the discount program?  My local(ist) brewery has started making some pretty good beers.  I've been buying growlers there lately for home consumption.  They only have a tasting room with beers to go.  No food.  They have a BA member sticker in their window.  It would be nice to get a buck or two off per growler as an AHA member.  Is there some place I can direct them to look for more info?  The other two breweries on the island already participate.  It would be nice to have all three onboard.

Feel free to send me an email with suggested participants for the program (steve@brewersassociation.org). It always helps to hear from the AHA members where they would like to see offers coming from.

In addition to my attempts at getting new breweries/brewpubs on board, AHA members can help spread the word by talking to tap room or bar managers at their local establishments about the program. There is a whole page dedicated to the Pub Discount Program on the AHA site under "Grow Your Business":
http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/pages/grow-your-business/pub-discounts

Here business owners can find information about the program, the AHA and a list of promotional benefits for participating in the program.

The Pub / Re: AHA Pub Discount

Sorry to hear you had trouble receiving the discount.

BJ's Restaurants have always been devoted supporters of the AHA and PDP, and ALL BJ's restaurant locations are participants in the Pub Discount Program. I spoke with the AHA's contact at BJ's Restaurants Inc. to confirm this as well as notify them that the location in Lewisville is not honoring the offer. We should have this fixed shortly!

Please let us now if you continue to have trouble receiving any of the listed offers at any PDP participating locations. Every now and then an issue arises when participation in the program is not communicated properly to new employees, and fortunately this can be fixed with a quick phone call.

Cheers!

Steve

Can we suggest homebrew shops to list, or is that something the actual business would need to do?

Of course! One of the goals of establishing this directory is to provide the most complete and up to date listing of homebrew supply shops for homebrewers. If there are any shops that you know of that are not listed in the directory, please let us know.
