General Homebrew Discussion / Re: 2011 NHC
« on: May 14, 2010, 06:09:49 am »
I heard rumors that the NHC was in Manchester, NH once...I'm sure it has grown 10 fold since then.  I couldn't imagine it here now.

Philly, Boston, DC all sound good to me.  Unfortunately I think NYC would be too expensive in June.

Pliny I hope.  Winds were kicking up around 40 mph last weekend so had to postpone.  Sunday looks like an awesome day so far.

Seattle would be great but I would need to take at least 2 weeks off to explore all that the PNW has to offer.  Oh and another week after that to recover...I just don't have that kind of vacation time. :)

I'd like to see some East coast love, but a trip to San Diego in June would be cool too.

San Diego has been floating around as a rumor, but the official word won't come until Saturday night at this year's NHC.

All Grain Brewing / Re: How many burns out of a 5lb propane tank?
« on: May 07, 2010, 09:58:29 am »
About 4-5 per standard grill tank for me.

I have mine inside the kegerator.  One less thing to trip over is a staggering trip to the kegs :)

Sits on the bump that's too high to put a corny on.

Ingredients / Re: Grain Suppliers and Storage

I've bought 2-row from Brewmasters Warehouse, mainly because they only charge $6.99 shipping and I have a 10% off code.  I store my grain in a 50 lb Vittle Vault that you can buy at pet supply stores.

I know a lot of people will do a bulk buy with their homebrew club or hit up local breweries and buy a sack or two from them.

Hey all I know is I have a ton of interests and they're always in conflict. Doesn't stop me! Why should this? :)

You guys can have all of the medium and 4X shirts that they can't sell.  :D

Wow, over 2000 responses so far since the survey email went out around 3PM yesterday!

If you give out free stuff, they will come.

Both surveys filled out.  I wish there was a section to put in comments like what a wonderful job the AHA is doing  ;)  ;)

The Pub / Re: Well, Stephen Hawking, if they do visit....

Supposedly time travel will be limited to between the time of the invention of the time machine to any point in the future there after. As in, you could only travel as far back in the past as the invention of the original time machine...

According to Quantum Leap, you can only travel back as far as your lifetime.

Why is it when people wonder where the aliens are going to land, they always assume they will land in the US?  Maybe they'd prefer a Czech Pils as opposed to a West Coast IPA. :)

Equipment and Software / Re: Chest Freezer for Fermentation
« on: April 30, 2010, 12:36:36 pm »
My chest freezer is only 5 cu ft so it only holds 1 carboy at a time.  I have a 2-stage Ranco controller and a Fermwrap to control the heat.  I taped the fermwrap to the side of the freezer and the temp probe get place on the outside of the carboy and covered with bubblewrap.

Just out of curiosity:  Why would there only have been 636 entries in the East Region when the cap of 750 was hit?

The Northeast capped out at 750, not the East.

Equipment and Software / Re: Glass or plastic?
« on: April 28, 2010, 01:31:53 pm »
Richardt...I do the same as you. Soak it in Oxiclean ( and I usually forget about it for a couple days ), but I never use a brush on it.  I usually just dump the oxiclean water and rinse several times with hot tap water and it comes out nice and clean.

Regarding the flexibilty of the BB when fermenting something and using an airlock.  If you try to pick it up, it will probably suck back the stuff you have in the airlock.  I put mine in a milk crate so I can pick it up without the sucking action.

Don't forget plastic carboys ( Better Bottles ).  This is all I use.  I don't do Lagers yet, so I really don't need to worry about long term storage issues.  The orange carboy caps fit on the 6 gallon bottles perfectly and can be used with a blow off tube ( 1/2" ID tubing on the big port ) or an airlock.   The only disadvantage is they are only 6 gallons, so there's not a lot of headspace when you fill them up ( I try to fill mine to 5.5 gallons so I get 5 in the keg ), but that's when I use the blowoff tube and then switch to airlock when fermentation slows.

I figure when I do lagers, I use the BB, then lager in a keg.
