Equipment and Software / Re: Cleaning Mills- Barley Crusher
« on: May 04, 2013, 03:33:49 PM »
i got a stiff bristled paint brush and use that to clean the bottom and rollers after every grind. i haven't had mine long enough yet but it's supposed to get a little oil once a year.

thanks fellas. crazy that it's shipped to washington and back. i hadn't even thought about where it would've been malted. i was born in yakima so i suppose that's okay too.

cheers.

All Grain Brewing / Re: FIRST all-grain: Apricot Ale

yeah, goosing is fine. I used a towel and then a down vest. but not both. that would be a nasty fire hazard.

also I'm guessing you will be topping off the fermenter to achieve your 5.0 gallon batch as the pot seems to be too small to do a full volume biab and end up with 5 gallons.

looks good to me but I'm not sure about the -apricot- flavor addition.

biab doesn't need a sparge since the full water volume is added at mash in. you could certainly do one but at that point you might as well get a cooler and do a batch sparge. do raise temp to mash out if you can. I had good success doing biab. my efficiency never got above about 75 but it was consistent. make sure you do a good job wrapping the kettle during the mash.

i have a bucket with star san i store some of my gear in (hoses and 02 stone). the rest is washed and stored in another older bucket on top of my mash tun(72qt cooler) in my brewing closet.

i have a few bins for odds and ends that is also in the brewing closet. everything is together. i have to pull it all out when i brew but it's not that much trouble.

Extract/Partial Mash Brewing / Re: Finishing hops question

no. contamination will still be an issue. when i used hops bags i would sanitize them. but now i just open them and pour them directly into the finished beer.

beer will not suffer with no secondary. I used secondary for my first few batches but plenty of discussion here turned me away from them.

just toss the hops into the fermenter. you can take a hydrometer reading to see when beer is finished and add dry hops then. I usually wait 2 weeks from pitching and dry hop for 1 week.

The Pub / Re: Best tablet not made by Apple
« on: April 27, 2013, 08:19:53 PM »
i have no need for a tablet, but i have bought two. one for my mom and one for my dad. they were both ipads. they work the way they should. they are easy to use. my dad has no technical savvy but was navigating the ipad in no time. office is coming soon i believe for the iOS. it's a little pricey but the great thing about apple is the software and hardware work very well together because they are designed to work well together. they execute a rock solid operating system. not telling you to get an ipad, just giving you my indirect experience. yes, i am an apple owner and bummed about some of the direction they are taking but i know their products will work, crash free.

I did a couple batches of pale ale that was 50 Maris/50 2 row and 50 centennial/50 Amarillo. great beer. I also just first wort hopped an ipa with 50 amarillo/50 centennial and used simcoe and warrior all late. it's pretty tasty.

General Homebrew Discussion / amazing brew day
« on: April 21, 2013, 06:12:24 PM »
I just got home from my buddy's place. we brewed 3 5 gallon batches today. his rye cream ale, our big hoppy dark ale(in the vain of sublimely self righteous) and my bubblegum head clone.

we had ups, we had some downs, we missed some numbers and we had lots of fun. we learned lots about his new(used) brewing rig. we had a couple good beers and I killed it grilling some buffalo steaks.

it was a pretty rad day and I just wanted to share the bliss.

have a great week everybody.

thanks for the thoughts everybody.

we decided last night to do something along the lines of sublimely self righteous since i've got plenty of chinook and simcoe and amarillo on hand.
