Zymurgy / Re: What's number 1 on your brewer bucket list?
« on: May 10, 2012, 01:35:35 PM »
Brewing with Brett. I am doing that this summer though so I suppose something I am not already doing would be to win a medal (any color) in a brew comp.

I just started brewing this past summer and have tried my hand at my own recipes with some moderate success, the beer taste good to me. But I have noticed that my first batches always need improvement. After reading the article combined with what I am tasting from my own beers I need to research more of what I put in the beer and how it melds together to create what I want.

Thanks for the awesome article.

Extract/Partial Mash Brewing / Re: Brewing with my dad

Thanks for the recipe. Since I am doing extract with grains I will get some pilsner DME instead of the pilsner grain. And probably add some biscuit malt in there. The blonde I had that made me want to brew this had a decent amount of bready, biscuty flavor that I really liked. I have never used vienna malt before though, whats it bring to the table? And I think I'll take your advice and do just one hop addition at the 60 minute mark, I tend to over hop my beer and I want to get away from doing that. How much hop do you think I should do. I don't really want that much of a hop presence in this beer. Just really a bittering effect.

I'm glad I inspired you to brew with your dad. It seems like it will be a blast. Drink beer and making beer with your dad should be awesome.

Extract/Partial Mash Brewing / Re: Brewing with my dad

So I am doing either a Blonde or a Saison. I had a blonde today that was so good. I'll ask him what he wants to brew and will make it. Will come back after brewing with the recipe we used and how it went.

Leffe Blonde is my favorite. I just bottled my first Belgian blonde yesterday, I wish mine could be as good as Leffe.

I saw your thread about it. Looked good. Extract or all grain? Care to share your recipe or tips on brewing a blonde? Really any help would be great!

Being new to brewing AHA is well worth the money. I learn something new every magazine and get some recipe ideas and such. Plus using my AHA card for discounts at pubs is extremly worth it, not just for the discount but for the look on the drunk peoples faces when I save money. For instance, one old drunk was arguing with me how much a growler would cost. Sundays a growler is $2 off for everyone and with the AHA card it's $2 off as well. So she kept yelling at me saying I am getting a good deal for $10 bucks. I whip out that card and BOOM $8. She went ballistic. Well worth my money to AHA.

General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Entered my first beer

Good luck with your beer! I entered one contest and it gave me some good feedback on my pale ale. Hope you get some good feedback and a BOS medal and prize. It's addicting. I can't wait to enter my next contest.

General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Clear(er) Beer
« on: May 04, 2012, 11:23:23 AM »
I had the same issue. My beer was tasting how I wanted it but it was always cloudy. I bought some whirlfloc tabs and a copper wort chiller. Before the wort chiller I was just using an ice bath. The wort chiller was about 60 bucks but after using it my beer is much clearer and it takes a lot less time to cool the wort.

A good time will be had thats for sure. The time he is here we are going to New Belgium for a brewery tour, brewing the next day and going to Avery's Sourfest the day after that. He will be in heaven.

Was also thinking of a Belgian Blonde or a Trappist Style ale. Anyone make any of these?

Extract/Partial Mash Brewing / Re: That extract "twang"

I have noticed it in few of my beers, and it was real prominent in the English bitter I brewed. I only tried a few about a week and two weeks after I bottled so it might have toned down a bit, will find out tonite. But most of my beers have been fine. One of them even scored well in a competition scoring a 37, and the guys in the brew club were amazed it was an extract beer. I always ferment in a big bucket of water to control temperature, if that helps.

I have brewed a lot of pale ales and was trying to think of something else but I will bring it up to him.

As for what he likes, he loves sours. Which I am not ready for nor do I know where to begin with that style. Other than that he like belgian beers. I was going to send some to him when they were ready so something that takes some time to get to bottle isn't a problem.

Extract/Partial Mash Brewing / Brewing with my dad

So my dad is visiting me out in Colorado in a few weeks and wants to brew with me. He has never brewed but has been recently turned on to craft beer. I have a English Bitter and a hefeweizen bottled and just did an IPA the batch before those so looking for something new that would be enjoyed during the hot summer months. I was thinking of a saison because it is something I wanted to always brew but wanted to give my father some options as to what he wants. Looking to brew a 5 gallon batch so give me some ideas or recipes you have tried.

Thanks

Extract/Partial Mash Brewing / Re: Mango Saison
« on: May 04, 2012, 09:25:01 AM »
I was thinking of brewing up a saison with my dad when he comes to visit me. And this might be something we try. I love classic saisons and always thought about adding some fruit to the equation.

Just one question, what is aromatic malt? Is that the name of the malt or are there malts that are designated as aromatic malt?

All Grain Brewing / Re: New to all grain. Need help with set up
« on: April 27, 2012, 02:25:58 PM »
So it looks like I will be doing the "Cheap n Easy" System. I have a 6 gallon brew pot but was thinking of going bigger. Is it worth it to do all grain batches at 5 gallons. I was thinking I could do 10 gallons of wort and use two different yeast strains to make some different beers. Now my question is stainless steel pot or aluminium?
