General Homebrew Discussion / Bottling With Bottles That The Caps That Twist Off

Hi all,

Got a quick question by brother wanted to find the answer to.  He is new to homebrewing and wants to use bottles that are made for twist off caps.  I have not tried that so I could not give any good answers.  Anyone out there in the ether tried to bottle with twist off bottles?

All Grain Brewing / Malt Analysis

Hi all,

Got a question for you.  I am new to all grain brewing and an trying to approach this very scientificly.  Today I purchased 9 types of 2-row and 6-row base malted barley and made teas out of 2 oz of each to test each type of grain the way Denny described in a Zymergy article a few months back.  I made notes and will be posting them Monday.

I am also reading Greg Noonan's New Brewing Lager Beer and am also trying to teach myself to look at malted barley and judge if it is well suited for making beer.  I have 4 types of Rohr 6 row and 2 row barley and the endosperm is white and kind of hard.  Noonan says tha thard greyish white malt isnot suited for brewing, is that what I am seeing.  Anyone else taken a look at Rohr malt and decided if the malts are usually mealy or glassy?

I remember seeing a new company advertised that would ship "fresh beer" from the brewer to your house, but I cannot find them online.

Yeast and Fermentation / Is My Wheat Ale Stuck?

Hi all,

I started brewing a Wheat Ale Sunday and checked the sp gr last night.  It was still at 1.050.  Is that normal after only a couple of days of frementation?  Also the air lock is no longer bubbling and Krausen has occured and the yeast has flockulated and settled out.

Zymurgy / Denny's Article in the Current Zymergy

Hi all,

Just wanted to let you know that Denny wrote a great article about creating homebrew recipies in the latest Zymergy.  Thank you Denny!!!  I enjoyed reading it and learned a lot.  I am deffinently going to start making teas out of grain and hops after this weeks trip to the LHBS.

I do have one question out there for all of you guys.  Denny was writing about a particular Porter he made and stated that the pH was low.  Does anyone know what the "notmal" pH range for beer is?

General Homebrew Discussion / Does Anyone Know if Yeast Produce Acid While Cask Conditioning?

Hi all,

I have noticed in my extract beers something that I would describe as slightly acidic after cask conditioning.  Is that along the same lines as the extract beer "twang"?  I kind of dought it because bannana and caramal seem to be the descripters people in this forum are using. 

Has anyone heard of acid being produced by yeast during bottle/keg conditioning?  The man running the homebrew supply shop said that happens and I should no longer bottle/keg condition.
