General Homebrew Discussion / Coconut Racking Issues
« on: June 16, 2012, 03:09:59 pm »
I just kegged my Coconut Milk Stout (Milk Stout w/ coconut) and it tastes great!  However, I had an issue w/ coconut clogging my siphon while I was racking to the keg.  Any suggestions as to how to avoid getting a stuck siphon the next time I brew this beer (which will be tomorrow.) My siphon got stuck about 6-7 times before I was able to get all but

I brew three gallon batches.  After fermenting for 10 days, I toasted 9 ounces of shredded coconut and dumped into my fermenter.  I left the coconut in there for 11 days (three weeks total in my primary fermenter) then transferred to my keg.

Thanks in advance for any advice on how to transfer this beer to the keg.

All Grain Brewing / Grain Mill
« on: April 06, 2012, 07:36:51 am »
I'm looking to add a grain mill to my set up so that I can start buying bags of grain.  I'm currently doing 3 gallon batches and will eventually start doing 5 gallon batches.  Any suggestions on what grain mill to get?  Thanks!

General Homebrew Discussion / 15 New Breweries coming to Denver
« on: March 31, 2012, 07:41:12 am »
In an article in today's Denver Post, they mentioned that 15 new breweries are planning to open up in the next year.  Good article featuring Grimm Brothers Brewery in Loveland, CO, on how they went from homebrewing to owning a brewery...now that I think about it, I guess we all own a brewery of some sort.  Article hits on how homebrew laws have changed the industry and with craft brew taking up only 5% of the industry, there's lots of room to grow.

General Homebrew Discussion / How to Add Vanilla
« on: March 17, 2012, 12:10:04 pm »
Going to brew my first Vanilla Porter soon and was wondering how everyone adds the vanilla.  I'm going to be using whole vanilla beans.  I've read where some soak the beans in vodka before adding them.  Is soaking them in vodka necessary?  Thanks.

General Homebrew Discussion / My First Homebrew Competition
« on: January 29, 2012, 02:42:45 pm »
Entered my Pale Ale (my 5th brew) in LHBS brew competition.  It wasn't a sanctioned event and the category I entered was the Yellow category, which included Pilsners, Pale Ales, Steams, etc...  There was a total of about 60 beers in my category and I finished 3rd!  I was shocked when they announced my name.  Talking w/ other contestants and their techniques, equipment, etc..., well, I felt a little overwhelmed and just didn't want to finish last.  Just goes to show it doesn't have to be fancy to be good!  Now, let's see if I can replicate it!

All Grain Brewing / 3 Gallon batch questions
« on: December 15, 2011, 08:36:05 am »
I will be attempting my first all grain batch soon.  I've got a 48qt rectangular Rubbermaid cooler MLT that I made w/ a stainless steel braid.  For a couple of reasons, I'm thinking of doing a 3 gallon batches.  Would the 48qt cooler MLT that I have now too big for a 3 gallon batch?  Thanks!

General Homebrew Discussion / My First Homebrew!
« on: December 05, 2011, 06:15:59 pm »
Just finished carbonating my first homebrew and wow!  I brewed an extract IPA and carbonated it in a keg for 5 days.  I really expected it to be ok, but I can't be happier with how it turned out!  Probably needs a little more carbonation, but man does it taste good.  I have to be honest and say that it's one of the best IPAs I've ever had.  I'm totally hooked now!

Here's a picture:
