All Things Food / Re: H**lth Food
« on: June 08, 2010, 06:23:01 PM »
i hear this all the time "doc, i would love to lose weight but i dont have the time"  i dont care.  exercise for fitness. not weight loss.  any weight loss from exercise can be considered a bonus.  then i get what foods should i eat.  again.  i dont care.  fix the portion control first.  control the appetite. eat the kind of foods you like. just less.  as far as meat goes. it has gotten a bad rap.  true, beef/fat will raise your cholesterol but it raises hdl more than ldl and your ratio actually gets better.  fix the weight first by appetite control.  soon, your body will let you know what to eat.  i had a patient who had borderline cholesterol.  he became a vegan without weight change and his lipid profile is actually a little worse. his ldl dropped by a point or two and his hdl plummeted. bottom line, you drink what you enjoy in moderation (hopefully), eat in moderation.

General Homebrew Discussion / Re: How to know more about beer
« on: June 08, 2010, 09:02:07 AM »
drew's book is very good, i use it as one of my main references

the brewer's home garden has great stuff in it as well, especially about making your own malts, speciatly malts and odd ingredients.   dandylion wine, rhubarb etc.  good recipes to use as a basis in these ingredients

in terms of getting basic techniques for just learning i like the  "basic home brewing"

and denny, i hope you get royalties on your recipe contributions

do fish get drunk when they drink water?
do they have a problem with oxidation?
have you ever caught a fish using beer for bait?
have you ever caught a fish while just using beer?  yes i think i have.  so, next time it is hot.  go fishing and drink a beer.  that will be fewer fish crapping in their toilet and ruining my water for the next time i brew.

either keep it covered to preclude evaporation or mark the volume so you can rehydrate (mix well)

Kegging and Bottling / Re: Priming with 3rd Runnings?
« on: May 29, 2010, 05:19:03 AM »
i have not tried it, though i save some for starters.  i think it would be fine but a few things i would consider (not sure how relevant)  i would still boil it, which you have to melt it anyway, and second, i would dilute/concentrate until it is close to the same specific gravity that corn sugar would give you.  that way you should have close to the same carbonation without exploding bottles or poor carbonation.  keep good notes and let us know

i will be the first "two star" to chime in.  feels like i have a whole bunch of good friends, and seem to find something in common with most (beyond beer)

Does that mean we can now say that Budweiser is a Belgian or Brazilian beer?

about 22 years ago i ordered a budweiser in a bar in hong kong.  british marine took offense that i didn't order something british.  i wonder if the outcome would have been as ugly if i said i prefer my Belgian beer rather than American.. 8)

last night i had a peanut butter and rhubarb/strawberry jelly sandwhich on rye bread.  actually was very good, so i thought (at midnight)  why not brew a beer with this combo. and actually in homebrew garden found a recipe for a rhubarb and rye ale. can't wait.

i have been thinking of doing this as well, and for lagering.  i thought i would just leave the gas supply line open to vent with either a tube in to a glass of water/vodka or just put sanitized cotton over it.
