i have some pancake/waffle mix that is made from malted barley.  (i have brewed once with it but it was just a little bit of a variety that had pumpkin flavor. i haven't even gotten around to trying the beer.  i don't know if there is any conversion ability in it or not. for that matter how about malt for making vanilla malts etc.

General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Observation

Won't argue with that b ut will point out that some of the absolute worst beers out there are homebrew, too. ;)

exactly, if you have ever suffered my crap.

actually though, i get disappointed in the offerings when i go out.  went out last night, and nearly every beer fell in to the light lagers, wheats, or flavored something or other, or some beer that is described as heavily hopped..  i am not a big fan of most of thesebeers because i think they just get the hell hopped out of them and taste like they were strained through asparagus. it is hard to find a dortmunder, a kolsch, a bock or a dunkel as is.  the stouts and porters are all flavored with x, y, or z.  eventually i noticed old rasputin which i like on the list and was happy.  but come on.

i just use ice packs, the foam gel ones. we get vaccines shipped with these and they would otherwise get thrown out. works very easy for me.  i just put them around the bucket in an insulated chamber and voila. depending on the outside temperature, but even in the summer, in my garage, i may change half of them every morning. some will stay longer, i just kind of gauge it. and i can keep temp at 50 degrees.

I'm thinking about using one of these for straining into the keg for fermenting. This would probably work pretty well...hope it wouldn't clog too much on the higher hopped beers. The cone shape would fit right into the opening of the keg. Pour carefully enough, it would also act as my funnel.

i use a very fine mesh pampered chef strainer that i usually have to rinse 1-2 times and i just dump my kettle through it whole hops and all. works great. however i think it may be a little big for a keg funnel.

i think i would also simplify the hop schedule. not so sure about the 1 minute and i would probably combine the fwh, 20 and 30 minutes to one of the three

All Grain Brewing / Re: Angry Beer?

sounds like a vigorous ferment, but i also bet that the vigorous fermentation is disturbing and mixing up a lot of cold break material depending on howyou chilled prior to switching to fermentor.  shown is about 1/2 cold break material that formed in my bucket overnight, prior to adding yeast. i then transferred to another bucket and added yeast

It's all subjective. I'm just glad beer isn't as completely arbitrary as modern art.

i am just glad i am not interested in art 8)

The Pub / Re: Reinheitsgebot craziness
« on: April 18, 2013, 07:40:29 am »
I think the discipline that Reinheitsgebot has instilled is a beautiful thing. Not to mention the fact, that I also really love a well brewed Dopplebock or a fresh Pilsner. On the other hand, the pioneers of American Brewing from the past and present day are heros of mine as well. Thinking/brewing outside of the box is the heart and soul of homebrewing.  :)
so in general, beer is good?
