General Homebrew Discussion / Teach A Friend to Homebrew Day
« on: November 04, 2009, 12:18:58 PM »
Just a reminder that this Sat. Nov. 7 is Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day (soon to become Learn to Homebrew Day!).  It's a great way to get friends who have expressed interest in homebrewing involved in what we all know is a great hobby.  Also, if you join the AHA fro Teach Day, you can get a free copy of John Palmer's fantastic book, How To Brew.  To join up, you or your friends can go to http://shop.beertown.org/brewers/dept.asp?s_id=0&dept_name=American+Homebrewers+Association&dept_id=1100&WT.svl=deptnav2 and enter the code TAF2009.

AHA Messages, Forum Rules & FAQs / Rules of the AHA Discussion Forum
« on: November 01, 2009, 02:25:08 PM »
1. Each member is allowed only one account. Attempts to register for multiple accounts may result in one or all of them being removed. Please notify a moderator if there are multiple legitimate users accessing the site from the same household.

2. Place your post only once and in the most appropriate forum for your topic. Posting in multiple forums or in the wrong forum to increase its views could result in your post being deleted totally or moved to the proper forum. If you are unsure where to post, contact a moderator for advice.

3. Be respectful of the questions and comments of others. It is OK to disagree with someone, but do so with respect. Keep the AHA forum friendly and encouraging of everyone's participation. We will not tolerate rudeness, insults, personal attacks, inflammatory remarks, threats, racial/ethnic slurs, trolling, flame baiting or similarly disruptive postings.

4. Vulgar, violent, shocking, profane, or explicit sexual images and/or language are prohibited. This includes the posting of external links to such material. Efforts to circumvent the language filter by intentionally misspelling words are not allowed. Avatars, images, and language will be moderated to a professional office environment level.

5. Access from sites blacklisted for spamming, spamming, chain letters, or referral requests are strictly prohibited. Please report these posts so that the moderating team can clean them up quickly.

6. Please be discreet with any discussion of currently illegal activity. For example, saying that you think certain drug or tax laws should be eliminated is OK, but presenting any indication that you are actively flaunting such laws is prohibited.

7. If you are a product or service vendor, you are welcome to discuss your product here as long as you participate as a member rather than by using the site as a vehicle for free advertising. Violation of this rule will result in immediate account deletion.

8.   The “Going Pro” Board is dedicated to discussion related to starting a new commercial brewery and/or becoming a professional brewer.

9.   The “Going Pro”  Board is not intended for discussion of existing brewery operations, such topics are more appropriate for the Brewers Association Forum (we can add URL for appropriate BA.org web page here).

10.   Any discussion of pricing of supplies, product, etc. on the “Going Pro” Board are strictly banned to avoid infraction of anti-competitive laws. Posts violating this ban will be removed immediately.

The above rules cannot anticipate every situation that might arise. The mods reserve the right to take steps not addressed in these rules in order to maintain a friendly and helpful environment. The #1 thing to keep in mind is "DON'T BE A JERK!"

All Things Food / Malted Chocolate Decadence
« on: October 30, 2009, 11:12:49 AM »
Here's something you can do with dry malt extract besides make beer!

Malted Chocolate Decadence
1/2 cup (1/4 lb.) butter or margarine
1/4 cup water
6 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped
2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, chopped
4 large eggs
3/4 cup malted milk powder  (or you can use DME)
2 tablespoons sugar

In a 2- to 3-quart pan over low heat, stir butter, water, and semisweet and unsweetened chocolate just until smooth. In a mixer bowl, whip eggs at high speed until doubled in volume. Beat in powder, then chocolate mixture and sugar.
Butter a 9-inch cake pan with removable rim. Set pan on 2 sheets of heavy foil, each about 12 inches square; press foil firmly against sides of pan (take care not to tear foil), letting ends extend above pan rim. Set pan with foil into a larger baking pan; pour batter into cake pan.
Put pans in a 350° oven; fill outer pan with about 1 inch boiling water. Bake until center of cake feels set when gently touched, about 45 minutes. Lift foil sides to remove cake from water; cool on rack. Chill at least 2 hours or up until the next day. Remove pan rim. Serves 12 to 16.

The Pub / Howdy everybody!
« on: October 20, 2009, 05:21:46 PM »
C'mon in, pull up a chair, and have a delicious adult beverage!  This is a place to tell jokes, talk about your family, ask how to fix something...that kind of stuff.  This isn't a place to call people names or make fun of them.  Please avoid discussion of politics, religion, or race.  As long as we all understand that, it's gonna be a lot of fun!  And just to be sure everybody understands, the mods are the sole arbiters of what's inappropriate here.  Their decision is final.

And PLEASE BE SURE to read the Rules of the AHA Discussion Forum at http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/forum/index.php?topic=32.0 .   That way we'll be sure we're all on the same page!
