Kegging and Bottling / Pretty sure I like flat AIPA
« on: March 22, 2012, 02:21:03 PM »
I just kegged an IPA yesterday, left it out of the fridge to warm the dryhops into infusion.

I just pulled a little.  Man, it is so good; I am calling it hoppy bread.  And it is flat.
Lately I have been enjoying flat IPA, or ones with little to much less carbonation.

So, the question is this:  Anybody else enjoy beer that is significantly under- or lightly carbed?
I mean, I don't think I need to even add much gas to this for it to be a totally enjoyable meal for me.
The hops are popping!

What say you?  Am I just thirsty? ???

Ingredients / The Perle
« on: March 05, 2012, 01:50:14 PM »
I was accidentally sent an extra 6 ounces this year.  Whole flower, American, and I think around 8%.
I rarely use this hop, mainly in a Baltic and snpa.

Just wondering what folks like to use the Perle for?
Anybody mess around with it as a late addition?
Good hops to blend with...C hops?  Goldings?

I was thinking about using them to bitter an American Brown, and perhaps again late.  Not sure.

Thanks for your thoughts and comments!

Ingredients / Magnum late
« on: February 07, 2012, 06:37:10 AM »
So I am out of nobles in the fridge,
and wondering if anybody has tried to use magnum late in place of late additions of Hallertauer or Mt Hood, or....

I know it is widely boxed into a bittering hop only.
But, I once did a single hop hopburst pale with it,
and it came out quite nice/rather mellow flavor and aroma and I thought it had subtle noble characteristics.

But it has been a long time since that beer, and I am not altogether certain I want to chance that road again.
So, just wondered if anyone has any experience with this nonsense.

Thanks.

Kegging and Bottling / The slim 7
« on: February 06, 2012, 11:30:54 AM »
Last week I scored 4 kegs, a CO2 bottle and regulator off Craig's list, $100.   :-*

The bottle turned out to be a slim 7 lb bottle.
I cleaned the keg fridge out really well this weekend, and now I can get 5 kegs in there with the bottle.
Perfect height as well.

Are these slim 7 pounders very common?  They sure work well for space constraints.

Cheers!

General Homebrew Discussion / Your favorite glass
« on: January 31, 2012, 07:32:37 AM »
How about a glassware thread?  I know everybody has a favorite.
Perhaps you like different glasses for different beer.  Maybe your vessel is not even glass.

It would be interesting to see what everybody likes.
Pictures are encouraged, unless you are very gifted in the art of verbal description. ;D

You already know I like a nice Mason jar, but I have become particularly fond of this shape:

Cheers!

You have been out for a few hours and pretty thirsty.
You are almost back to your vehicle and you spot this on the ground:

Seeing the pushed out bottom makes you think there is a chance...

Sure enough.  Unopened.

The Pub / an irruptive year
« on: December 09, 2011, 07:44:17 AM »
for the coolest owl we have.

They are headed south in mass numbers

Apparently, Hawaii just got its first record of a snowy owl, showed up at the airport in the capital.
What a problem bird, couldn't catch it, it wouldn't leave, so they blasted it.  Yep, shot it dead. ::)

If arctic owls can get to Hawaii, they could get to your house.  Be on the look out if you like this sort of thing. 8)

Beer Recipes / The Maibock
« on: December 07, 2011, 02:16:01 PM »
I want one this spring, and think it is time to brew it up.
I have looked at the recipes here and elsewhere and had a couple questions.

I am thinking about using S-189, and wondering if anyone uses that for a helles or maibock?  Bad idea?

and then the hops, I was thinking about using what I have access to in the freezer which would be Perle and Mt Hood.
not sure if not having any Tett or Haller is a deal breaker.  I guess this would be an americanized version, but would it work?

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Cheers.

Kegging and Bottling / bottling from a keg
« on: December 01, 2011, 05:32:52 PM »
Can someone school me?

Since I have started kegging, I miss the ability to travel with or gift my beer.
Is there an easy way? Do I have to buy a gun?

What about filling growlers for travel?

Thanks in advance. 8)
