No brewing this weekend for me.  The festival down in Port will not be happening either.  The flood gates at Conowingo are all open and I expect Port Deposit and Havre de Grace will have major flooding.  Supposed to be the worst since Agnes in '72.  I am glad I bought a house at the top of the cliff this time.

Brewed up 10gal. of Octoberfest (yeah, I know it is rather late to start this) yesterday.  It was the second time doing a decoction mash.  Had it into the fermentor and cleaned up within 8 hours!

I did an Oktoberfest as well, no decoction though.  5 gallons with White Labs bock yeast (This yeast really brings out the malt) and 5 gallons with S-05 (Mocktoberfest)

Only calling for tropical storm winds in my area, Ron.  I'm about 50 miles northwest of you.  I hope it goes to the right as well.  On the bright side, the generator is ready to go and we have plenty of food and water.  Lost power for 4 days when Isabelle came through in 2003, we were the only house in the area that had a generator at the time.  Good luck to you, brother.

Looks like I'll have the time to put a double batch of IPA together.  I haven't brewed all summer and I'm starting to run low.  Had to put down one of the pack this week.  She had been sick for a couple of months (cancer).  Hurt her back a couple of weeks ago and was having a rough time getting around.  RIP Rennie     She's the tricolor Aussie shepard in the back.

Saturday is our inaugural "Delaware State Fair - Battle of the Brews Homebrew Competition". I am the judge coordinator. We have some 200+ beers to judge. It's going to be a hot one...and one not to miss. Come One ...Come all !

No brewing this weekend. The Quad is happily fermenting and smelling magnificant.

I will be helping with the judging there as well.  First competition.  100+ degrees.  In a tent.  Should be fun.   I hope to finish building my lagerator on Sunday to be ready for this years Oktoberfest fermentation next weekend.

Had the IPA while on vacation.  I was not impressed.  The bitterness was OK, but the hop flavor and aroma were practically non-existant.  I am wondering whether it was too old.  Had it in FL, so that may have been the case.

Ah.  You must have gotten a UIPA (underattenuated IPA).  They're pretty popular based on the number of people who make them.

  I prefer those like Ruination.  Hoppy with a crisp dry finish, but you can still taste the malt.  Pliny is tough to get around here, but I hear there is a place a little over an hour away that has it.  Between Ron and myself, we'll get some one of these days soon.

2. I have planted summer squash. There are lots of pretty squash blossoms! But they all fall off. Is this normal?

Do you have all of one gender of blossoms?  The first ones are typically all male.  You can look at them and determine the gender by looking for an immature fruit behind the female flower.  The timing has to be just right, so it can be hard if you only have one plant.  I would take a paint brush, find a male flower on the first morning it opens, get some pollen and pollinate the open female flowers.  Do it every morning and hopefully you'll get some fruit.

I ususally let bees take care of this.   It does help to have at least two of everything you are growing.  The plants do not have to be the same though i.e., one yellow, one zuchini for instance.  We don't grow summer squash anymore because I am totally burnt out on it.  We would have two plants and they would produce enough to feed a small village for months.

I brewed a Sasion using the 3711 yeast on the 11th and as of 2 days ago it was down to 1.010 and still showing signs of fermentation. I would expect this one to hit 1.005 or lower.

I had this one go down to 1.002 from 1.054.  The one thing I don't care for is the slippery mouthfeel as mentioned in the specs for this yeast, but it does ferment like crazy.
