I am going now. YIPPEE ;D Although I might not bring any beer with me due to the $25 bag check fee, but, hey, maybe I could ship it, then use the box to ship beer that I buy there back home to myself. Yeah, that might work.

Does anyone know if there is a special address to ship beer to the conference hotel?

You can take a lot more beer in a checked bag for 25 than shipping it

Going Pro / Re: First Pro Competition

Good luck.  I was invited to go judge for that but had made too many trips over the mountains around that time for judging and other beer events.

Ingredients / Re: Boiled Water Lab Test Results
« on: June 09, 2013, 09:25:53 AM »
I have a TDS meter and even one of the aquarium GH/KH test kits.  I could test those before/after and post the results.  My water here is so variable as the city picks different wells to draw off of so I switched to using all RO.

Beer Recipes / Re: Session IpA recipe critque
« on: June 06, 2013, 08:20:02 AM »
The problem with a lot of session IPAs I've had is they end up way too thin.  Personally I would mash higher (155-158) and increase the amount of crystal malt to around 20% of the total.  I'd probably drop the aromatic out completely since you are using maris otter which has a ton of flavor already

Kegging and Bottling / Re: 5 gallon plastic kegs
« on: June 04, 2013, 12:47:18 PM »
I've never used one of those type, but IIRC it's a Pubkeg

Some of the benefits of sanke vs corny:
Less o-rings on sanke (5 on corny vs 1 on sanke)
Less places to worry about a leak on a sanke
Builtin check valves on sanke coupler
More nooks and crannies that need to be cleaned on corny
Sanke less likely to get plugged by small hop chunks (larger dip tube and no tiny poppet)

I use cornys most of the time now but sanke's are a far superior product.  Assuming you have the equipment to properly clean them that is.  I like the plastic kegs I've worked with, but safety should be considered.  It's so much nicer to move around a full or empty 1/2bbl plastic vs stainless.

Kegging and Bottling / Re: Gelatin fining and FC Question
« on: June 03, 2013, 09:12:01 PM »
I don't know where I heard/read it but I always thought gelatin worked pretty quickly and was ineffective afterwards where isinglass was effective forever.

I'm guessing you fined in the keg.  You could always transfer to another keg to carb it or since you probably have 2 kegs try one and see what happens.

I made a grazter earlier this year and loved it, need to make another one.

The Pub / Re: Well, most brewery owners are cool...
« on: June 03, 2013, 08:33:19 PM »
I used to go to MBC all the time when I lived back there and I used to really enjoy their beer.  My wife even bought my starter kit from Things beer.

The best thing to come of it all is that the Celis brand is going back to Austin and hopefully will be a good wit again.

Beer Travel / Re: DTW actually has one good beer!
« on: June 03, 2013, 04:08:19 PM »
I fly through Detroit a lot and the beer selection in this airport, where I write this right now is terrible. But I just discovered the Heineken Lounge has Brooklyn Lager and Bell's Two-Hearted in bottles. Its a small positive in this huge negative.

Nice.  I'll be through there before and after NHC this year.  I'll have to check it out on my way out of town.

General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Competition routine question
« on: June 02, 2013, 12:36:58 PM »
Honestly I'd try to find some more local competitions to enter first before entering NHC.  You're cost per entry will be a lot cheaper and you might not even have to ship the bottles.  Often you get the same level of feedback or better at a smaller well run competition vs the NHC 1st round.

County fair season is coming up too.  They can be sometimes cheap or free to enter.

Check the schedule for a few nearby.  http://www.bjcp.org/apps/comp_schedule/competition_schedule.php

I'll print my forum avatar on my name badge so people recognize me.

Easily recognizable in that hat.

I special requested that my forum name be on my badge

Cool I might have to send a few entries down to support them

Ingredients / Re: Dosage for generic yeast nutrient?
« on: May 23, 2013, 12:50:19 PM »
I go for about 1tsp per 5 gal (I normally put in 2 tsp for a 12 gal batch).  The nutrients with DAP are definitely noticeable in beer if you overuse them.

All Things Food / Re: Starsan and tomato paste
« on: May 16, 2013, 05:22:17 PM »
I used to always run into this problem.  Sometimes I'd freeze it but then I'd forget it was in there and open another can.

My wife bought some dehydrated tomato powder like this:

It really works great and is super convenient.
Does it work well as a thickener?

Seems to work pretty good.  I used to reconstitute it into tomato paste form and then add it, but now I just add the powder and adjust the other liquid content if necessary
