General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Who messed with the grain mill?!?
« on: October 04, 2010, 05:38:03 pm »
I think our next big purchase will be a grain mill - any suggestions?

In general, it seems like no matter which mill people get they're happy with.  I've used a JSP MaltMill for 10+ years and think it's a great mill.

+1 Love mine.
10+ years for mine too. 80% this weekend (and I motorized it)

Which version of the MM do you have, and how long have you had it?

Anyone using a JSP?

JSP for over 10 years, no problems.  & have automated with a reclaimed table saw motor.

How about an Old Fezewig Clone?

Transfer to a corney, top with CO2.  Easier to handle, no glass breakage.  I have my BarleyWine in a corney for almost 2 years now.

Ingredients / Re: Brewing herbs - lemon and bee balm
« on: July 15, 2010, 07:08:45 am »
I would say that a neutral, low IBU beer would be best.  I know of some that have used Lemon Balm as a dry hop.  It's really open to experimentation.  It's nice to be able to use your own ingredients that you have grown.  I currently have a mead with mint from the garden going now.  The key is to balance the flavor of the herb with the beer.

Did 5 gal Dirty Blonde & 5 gal Berliner Weisse yesterday.  92dF / 110dF heat index.  No beer while brewing, but plenty of ice water.

JSP non-adjustable with 1/2hp motor off an old Delta Table Saw.  1.5" sheeve on motor, 10" sheeve on mill, 360 rpm.  If you are crushing rye, mix it with your base grains so it doesn't clog & stop the rollers.

I picked up a B3 temp controlled 12 gal conical on Craigs LIst.  It's good because I make 10 gal batches of my house beers, but wouldn't have bought it retail.  I'd get the Blichman and an upright freezer  if I had to do it again.

Try for an APA/IPA , something dark like Porter/Oatmeal Stout,  third tap Pils, Kolsch in winter, Hefe or Belinerweisse in Summer.

It may sound funny, but try some ammonia. Most craft breweries (using bottles suitable for homebrewing) use an ammonia soluble  glue. And one thing is for sure - ammonia is a cheap alternative to PBW for the purposes of removing labels!

You know, I had heard this, I bought a bottle of ammonia, but I haven't tried it yet. Old habits and all.

A little amonia in warm water.  Soak overnight.  Labels off.  Been doing this for years.

2 oz amonia/ 5 gal
