Questions about the forum? / time
« on: November 09, 2010, 01:26:34 PM »
So, since we changed the clocks here the forum time is off.  Will that change, or should I adjust it in my profile?  It's fine either way, just curious.

Commercial Beer Reviews / Oakshire Brewing
« on: October 16, 2010, 10:23:13 PM »
Anyone had any of their beers?

My brother in law brought me a mixed case of 22s, and they're universally good.

The rye is smooth and easy drinking, although a tad sweet to me.  And no aftertaste to speak of.

The amber is not quite as hoppy as I want it to be, but really good anyway.

The espresso stout is a great beer, firm coffee flavor and well balanced.

I'll let you know about the IPA and Harvest when I get there . . .

General Homebrew Discussion / BC Canada Homebrew Laws
« on: October 10, 2010, 07:00:43 PM »
Random question -

A friend of mine has been banished by his company for the next year or so to Sechelt BC.  Google maps literally shows zero roads there.  Rumor has it there's a homebrew shop in "town", but he's not sure he's allowed to brew.  Does anyone have a clue about this?  He's a US resident with a Canadian work permit.  :-\

Beer Recipes / Gliese 581 G
« on: September 30, 2010, 03:48:53 PM »
With the news that astronomers have for the first time found a planet outside of our solar system that may be able to support life, I think it's time to brew a beer.  They're calling it Goldilocks, since it's in the habitable zone around the star and is neither too warm nor too cold.  The star is Gliese 581, the planet is G.

So, since they're calling it Goldilocks I'm thinking a Belgian Strong Golden Ale.  Maybe with some spices, maybe not.  I'm tempted to throw some bugs in it as well, since it's all about various lifeforms :)

What do you guys think?  What would you brew?

The Pub / how to determine amps?
« on: September 07, 2010, 01:35:58 PM »
Does anyone know of a way to figure out how many amps a battery operated product draws?

I'm trying to size an ac adapter for my kids cd player - I know it needs a 9V adapter with positive outside, negative inside.  But I don't know the amps I need, and don't want to undersize it.  I've got a DMM and can measure it I guess, if I could figure out where to place the probes.

I know some of you guys are more electrically inclined, so what do I do?

I contacted the manufacturer, they said it is discontinued and they can't provide me any information.

All Things Food / Lippia graveolens
« on: September 05, 2010, 08:36:00 PM »
I know this is going to be a bit of a stretch, but does anybody have any Lippia graveolens (Mexican Oregano) growing in their yard?  There are some other plants that are sometimes called Mexican Oregano, I'm just looking for this one.  I want to grow it as a house plant since it's too cold where I live, and the online sources end up at $20+ for a tiny plant when you include shipping.  So before I drop the cash I thought I'd try here.  Looking for seeds or a small plant.

Kegging and Bottling / bad secondary regulators?
« on: September 02, 2010, 11:39:15 AM »
I recently got a 5-way secondary regulator that I've mentioned in a few threads.  I noticed today that two of the regulators don't zero out.  When the screw is all of the way out, one will creep up to 8 psi, and the other to around 5 psi.  Were they just set wrong to begin with?  Is there an easy way to adjust them?

Thanks

Questions about the forum? / suggestions
« on: September 02, 2010, 11:07:17 AM »
A couple of suggstions:

In the AHA Messages, Forum Rules & FAQs, there's 9 (and growing) sticky messages right at the top.  Maybe it's time to split this into an AHA messages section and a Forum Rules and FAQs section?

Include the menu bar at the bottom of the page, so people don't have to scroll back up to click the link to go up the menu.  You know, this thing:
Homebrewers Association | AHA Forum >Admin >Questions about the forum? >Start new topic
I don't know if the software gives you that kind of flexibility, but it'd be nice.

All Things Food / more smoking . . .
« on: September 01, 2010, 11:07:42 PM »
I'm going to smoke some meat this weekend.  I'm thinking a large chunk of beef or pork, anyone have any recommendations?  I know that's really wide open, I just can't decide.  I might just go with whatever is cheapest at costco.

I mostly smoke on my grill, I can keep it around 240-250 pretty consistently but no lower.  I might be getting a new grill before the weekend though, the old one is a bit small for when we have a lot of company.  Has anyone tried one of those infrared grills?  Have a favorite gas grill for less than $500?  I know all of the arguments in favor of charcoal grills and I don't disagree with them, I just love the convenience of a gas grill.

Ingredients / Brewing spice sources
« on: August 24, 2010, 10:36:32 AM »
I'm months behind on my magazines as usual, but read Randy Mosher's article "Spicing Up Your Beer" from Mar/Apr Zymurgy last night.  He referenced a few online spice sources, but I want to list some others too.

World Spice Merchants - awesome selection and great info on spices
Taste Pad Thai - great source for fresh Thai spices (lime leaves, lemongrass, galangal, etc)

I haven't tried Randy's sources, but want to include them so later when I'm looking for something I can just come here instead of trying to find the right magazine again. The search button for my house is usually broken :)

Gernot Katzer's Spice Pages - Nothing for sale, good info
Wild Weeds - Botanical supplier, they have Myrica gale
Monteagle Herb Farm - Another botanical supplier
San Francisco Herb Company - Large culinary herb supplier
The Spice House - Culinary herbs and spices including bitter orange and grains of paradise.  Retail outlets in many cities
Penzeys - Culinary herbs and spices, retail outlets in many cities

The Pub / What's your favorite part of being a homebrewer?
« on: August 19, 2010, 12:14:03 PM »
wingnut made a comment here that got me thinking.
http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/forum/index.php?topic=3341.msg37896#msg37896

He said "In my opinion, drinking the beer is only half the fun!"

I think that's too high for me, I'm thinking more like 25%.  Another 25% is the gadgets and equipment, 25% for actually making the beer, and 50% for sharing the beer with others while talking about beer and beer making.

What is that, 125%?  Oh yeah, -25% for cleaning everything.  There 100%.  :)

Anyone else?

Wood/Casks / Wood aging (other than oak)
« on: August 14, 2010, 04:58:14 PM »
Is anyone doing any kind of wood aging with wood other than oak?  I'm interested in playing with aging my beers with different kinds of woods.
