General Homebrew Discussion / Help me decide
« on: May 19, 2011, 10:32:18 AM »
I'm having a family free weekend - I thought it was just going to be Saturday AM to Sunday lunch, but it turns out it is going to be more like Friday AM (I might have to take the afternoon off :) ) until maybe as late as Sunday dinner.

What should I brew?

I'm definitely brewing a Weizen on Friday and a hoppy red beer on Saturday (Rapture Red).  Those are set.

I really need to brew some Flanders and get that going again.  I have a RIS recipe sitting around that should get brewed at some point, but I think I might put it off further.  I'm open to other suggestions.  morticaixavier had some ideas for rapture themed ingredients that might be good in the right style, but nothing is grabbing me.

I have a variety of malt and hops on hand, but there is a well stocked LHBS 20 minutes away and three more within 45 minutes.

What ideas have you got?  What else should I brew?

Classifieds / Seattle area beginner kit $57
« on: May 11, 2011, 09:23:02 AM »
If you know anyone looking to get started this is a good option.  I'm not sure how long this deal lasts, and I doubt they will ship.  Comes with a lesson.

I'm not affiliated with the store, other than it is my LHBS.  I don't have any other information.

Equipment and Software / mini malter

This is awesome.  I could use a scaled down one at home :)

I wonder what they cost to build, and if it would easily scale to do a couple thousand pounds at a time.  Can you say "craft malting"?

Events / pre conference events
« on: May 04, 2011, 01:40:48 PM »
I'm going to be in San Diego early enough to hit the pre-conference events, and I'm trying to decide what to do.  http://www.somelikeithoppy.com/events.html

I'm not going to do a Stone tour, since I will likely have been there already (I'm getting to the area on Saturday).  I can't do both Brewery Tour A and B since they overlap.

Brewery Tour A, 10AM - 3PM: Ballast Point, San Diego Brewing Company, Coronado Brewing

Brewery Tour B, 1PM - 7 PM: Lightning Brewery, Green Flash, Rock Bottom La Jolla

Best of San Diego Beers, 5PM - 12AM: O'Brien's Pub (at least two beers apiece from Alpine, AleSmith, Ballast Point, Green Flash, Lost Abbey, Pizza Port and Stone along with a bonus keg or two from Russian River)

It's hard to decide, but I might do A, take a nap, then go to O'Brien's.  I have to be somewhere (and functioning) at 8:30 AM though, so I can't be out too late.  Maybe I should do tour B and try to get to bed early . . .

Has anyone scheduled anything yet?

Beer Travel / Bottled beers in NC
« on: April 22, 2011, 09:27:55 AM »
We've been through this before, but times change.  I'm looking for a list of bottled North Carolina (and maybe a bit surrounding there) beers to try.  I'll be heading there in a few months, and my brother has asked me for a list of beers for him to secure before I get there.  He's in the Raleigh area, but sometimes travels around the state and can pick up beers from other areas.

I know there are a lot of good breweries out Asheville way, but I don't know how many of them package.  It's got to be something he can get ahead of time and hold on to.  Specialties, one offs, and newer places are great, there's a good chance I've tried many of the ones that have been around for a while.

Kegging and Bottling / used kegs
« on: April 17, 2011, 10:27:22 PM »
I was cleaning out some used cornies I got . . . some of them are pretty messed up.  Check out this diptube:

Note that the top of the diptube is on the right!  It was so bent it had a kink right near the top so there was no way to pull it out.  I had to cut the top off the tube and pull it out through the lid opening.

Has anyone every tried to remove the bottom from a corny keg?  I have one keg that is perfect except the bottom is missing, but I figure if I can pull the bottom off of one of the thrashed kegs than I can make a whole one.

Beer Travel / San Diego
« on: March 27, 2011, 10:51:16 PM »
Ok, I know I put this in the beer travel section but I'm looking for specifically non-beer stuff in the San DIego area.  We'll be down for the conference Friday or Saturday beforehand, probably spend a day at a beach somewhere and then try to see some cool things.  Not especially into shopping and stuff like that, more like natural beauty, maybe historical places, or just something awesome for whatever reason.  If the cool stuff is near a brewery that's a bonus because we'll hit a few for sure, but its not the focus.  Once SWMBO leaves (Monday or Tuesday), THEN the breweries will be front and center :)

Any recommendations on nice but affordable places to stay would be great too.
