The Pub / Oh that Google
« on: February 04, 2013, 12:21:41 PM »
This is probably some glich (maybe) but for some quick entertainment, go to a Google map of Albany, GA here - http://goo.gl/maps/pteZk

Albany is home to a MillerCoors brewery which is marked on the upper left side of the map.

Now type "brewery" into the search bar and see what it brings up.

Questions about the forum? / Unread threads
« on: January 22, 2013, 07:38:46 AM »
Has there been a change to how the unread button works? I've been feeling like "unread" threads are disappearing without me opening them.  I was away this weekend and off the forum. Last night I checked and there were two pages of unread threads. I read a few and went to bed. This morning there are 9 unread.

Beer Travel / Inn at Cooperstown Bed and Brew
« on: January 21, 2013, 06:55:45 PM »
We just went to the Inn at Cooperstown's Bed and Brew weekend and it was pretty fabulous. Some of the best features are that the Inn only sells packages these weekends, so their 20 rooms are filled with beer lovers who stayed up into the wee hours in the Inn's parlors sharing beer and stories.  A couple brewers from Ommegang spent their evenings with us too. It was a lot of fun.  The Inn's owner also has dozens of cases of rare Ommegang beers, some of which he shared with the guests.

Other Fermentables / Copper does remove sulfur!
« on: January 15, 2013, 07:02:31 AM »
My Asian pear cider had a slight sulfury nose that I'd hoped would age out (but it didn't after 5 months). After reading about copper binding sulfur compounds here, I bought a small piece of copper pipe and dropped it in the carboy on Saturday night. Last night the sulfur aroma was gone (2 days) and we bottled it. Awesome!!

General Homebrew Discussion / Hop production in North Carolina
« on: January 10, 2013, 07:02:11 AM »
I came into work this morning (Department of Agriculture) and somebody had left this on my desk. I would have thought North Caronlina too far south for hop production, but...

All Things Food / Sourdough starter from sour mashed grain
« on: December 04, 2012, 11:16:38 AM »
I'm curious if anyone has tried using sour mashed grains or wort to make sourdough bead. Honestly, I don't know if it is lacto or something else in sourdough. The idea popped into my head while reading the spent grain thread.

Other Fermentables / Cheap hydraulic cider press
« on: October 16, 2012, 06:32:49 AM »
I saw this the other day and thought "Hey, that looks like a cider press - just add your own cheeses". Over the weekend it was on sale for $149. Alas, I didn't buy it. I really don't have room in my garage.

Other Fermentables / blah hard cider
« on: September 27, 2012, 11:15:53 AM »
Experience is a great way to learn right? So after 6 years of cidermaking, I tried pressing scrap apples from someones tree. Unknown variety - probably red delicious or macintosh, but I'm sure it is a single variety. The juice was sweet and tasted good, though the cider from my local orchard tastes much more complex.  Now that it is fermented out, BLAHHH. It is just very uninteresting, little flavor or aroma of anything that was once apples, and I'm used to very dry cider but this is like alcoholic water. Pretty uninspiring. I think it needs to be doctored up and brought to a party.

All Things Food / Advice for getting a smoker
« on: September 07, 2012, 06:00:03 AM »
I've been thinking about getting a smoker and since BBQ Style is the single most popular thread on this site, perhaps this is a good place to ask for advice.  Part of me wants to build it myself. Mostly I'm pretty undecided on where to go with this.  What does everyone think?

« on: August 20, 2012, 01:34:02 PM »
So Ron tells me there are some interesting/crazy/themed club booths at club night. DUH is signed up for 2013. Does anyone have pictures they can post or link to from past conventions?
