All Grain Brewing / Re: All grain brewing in the winter
« on: November 03, 2011, 07:40:21 AM »
I can't use my garden hose in the winter. When the temperatures really drop there is a danger of bursting pipes if I don't shut my outside spigots off. What does the acronym HLT stand for?

Understandable. I have a freeze-proof outdoor faucet that I connect my hose to for brewing. Then disconnect and drain it when I'm done.

Putting it in a tub of cold water and stiring will cool it relatively quickly. Fill the tub well before brewing and the water will be nice and cold.

The grains will barely notice being mashed in the cold. Those coolers are well insulated.

For chilling, why don't you just get the garden hose out? The water will be nice and cold, making chilling a breeze.  Otherwise - during the summer I fill my HLT with water and ice and run that through the chiller. Once at an event without running water, I did the same and used a small pump to pump icewater through the chiller and back into the ice.

Yeast and Fermentation / Re: Too long in Secondary Fermenter???????

I don't think I've ever bottled a beer in 16 days. I rarely get to it in 3 weeks now.

Other Fermentables / Re: What to do with some chokecherry syrup.
« on: November 01, 2011, 07:56:05 AM »
They are called 'choke' cherry's for a reason. Do you know if it is chokecherry honey, chokecherry syrup, or chokecherry syrup with honey, or something else?

Another way to do it is to weigh a level cup, which is 48 tsp, so you just divide the weight by 48.  It gives a decent approximation I think.
This was going to be my suggestion.

Back when the show ended, I did some reading on all this and there was supposed to be one more episode shot and shown.  I believe it was centered around opening of a brew pub.

Anyone have any idea of a place to see that episode if it is out on the great big www anywhere?

I heard a few months ago that they're still trying to finish the episode and hope to sell the whole series to a new channel, but its been on hold. I'm pretty sure it's based on Italy, for the new pub at Eataly.

petabyte hard drive
I think you could probably reduce the bitrate a little and be OK.  ;D

Then buy an ipod and fit one song on it.

Beer Recipes / Re: A Wiki Plea
« on: October 31, 2011, 06:13:35 AM »
Denny....How about starting a sticky thread, "Favorite Recipes" that can be put into the wiki. It would then have to be input by someone just as an emailed recipe would but might generate some interest.

I agree it would generate interest, but until there's a plan to get the recipes put into the wiki I'd rather not get ahead of myself.

I get the wiki editing notifications and most edits seem to be made by 'ahaintern'. Maybe 'ahaintern' could do this too.

Sounds good!

Equipment and Software / Re: Fridge breaking/broken
« on: October 28, 2011, 06:30:12 AM »
I had a fridge at work that was doing that (fridge warm, freezer frozen). Two causes - usually it was ice buildup on the coils. Once it was the circulator fan motor - I don't think this was an expensive fix.  The way it works is the coil cool the freezer and the fan circulates cold air to the fridge through vents as needed. So if the vents are blocked or fan doesn't work, the fridge gets warm.

Going Pro / Re: I just want to be able to sell my beer

I don't know what the trend in established nano breweries is, but I would think that nano brewing and kegging are not good friends economically. This is simply because your 10 gal might be worth 150 in a keg (retail), but packaged in bombers at $10 each, that same batch is worth $400.  $400 - costs and labor is not much to live on, but it is substantially better than $150 - costs and labor which is probably an imaginary number.

Call the TTB...

Most government inspectors are human, and they'll be happy that someone is being proactive about compliance instead of building and getting frustrated about changes after inspection. You'll also get a feel for the attitude of the person who might be doing your inspections.

We burned about 400 cds on our desktop. I set it to automatically start burning when the cd is inserted and to open the door when finished. It usually starts playing the music while ripping, and stopped when the door ejected - providing a cue to insert the next one. It sounds boring, but you can do something else at the same time.

Zymurgy / Re: Zymurgy online?!?!

I like the ability to search all online issues.

I don't like that the search and zoom icons are very similar.
