Thanks for getting some discussion going on this Fred.
Thank you hamiltont for those links...that should be a start.
My angle was that it would be nice to have a header and topic zone for this information
that could grow as information by posters was discussed.
just my .02 cents

I kept em for some years Tuber...and winters up here are brutal.  After losing hives, and having to replace the residents...

I learned that it is a lot less work to take the hive replacement money down to the local guy that does it for a living and

#1. Purchase fresh local honey...

So...It is a lot of work to keep bees
It is even more work to keep bees properly to where they are happy and productive for you
It is tough to harvest and you will want/need specialized equipment
It is hard to clean up after your harvest
It has it's rewards knowing that you Can accomplish the task...however I recommend that you
See #1 Above...

IMO some minor experience as well, Vodka/Everclear will dissolve/break down oils.  The oils in a chocolate stout I made
using real Cacao beans (oily cocoa butter) were not a head retention factor after a long soak in Everclear.  Just a great smooth
BIG chocolate flavor for the stout.

Denny,
Yes I tried Herman's recipe. Definately close.  The blind taste test I did here at the house with some
Genuine Rochefort 8, VS my homebrewed recipe using Hermann's as a basis was preferred by blind tasters.
Freshness could be the deciding variable, that and the fact that my batch was lower in Alcohol than the monk's
which I am sure reduced harshness.

Edit: I hate it when I fat finger type something wrong in the header...sorry, my bad ...

Kegging and Bottling / Ez way to remove Pepsi/Soda smells from your New Keg
« on: November 27, 2009, 08:50:44 AM »
I discovered this by accident but I liked it....

Got a couple Used corny Kegs that had that soda pop aroma in them after a good scrubbing
and PBW + hot H20 Soak...still they smelled like Pop...

I opened a 50 cent pint bottle of Rubbing alcohol and poured half in each keg....put the lid on and posts
on loosely....Swished that alcohol around inside the kegs...let it sit in the keg upside down (concentrating the alcohol)
on the inside parts of the lid and posts....

Next Day, I removed the residual alcohol...and left the kegs open to atmosphere...when the alcohol had evaporated off,

THE POP SMELL had disappeared....YMMV

I brewed beer once using spendy Jaggery sugar derived from coconut the jaggery tasted like coconut.
After the yeast got done chewing on the brew, it did NOT taste like coconut.  This may be more difficult
than you imagine.  The addition of extract to Secondary may be your best shot...IMO.
