Thanks, Mark G.  I'm just about to lager a Dusseldorf Alt, and I hadn't considered that.

+1 on taping the probe to the side of the carboy, covered in styrofoam, bubble wrap, etc, to insulate

Right now, Flying Dog is selling 8-packs of their high gravity beers in 7 oz amber bottles.

(I wondered why it was only 8 bucks for an 8-pack...)

Regarding mail order, this place gives a 15% military discount:  http://www.hoptech.com/
Never ordered from them before, but I've heard their ads on the BN...

Cheers

Excellent blog post...  Thanks for sharing, Jake!

Got my busted up bubble-mailer today, in a bag with the USPS' "sincere apology" for damaging the package.  Thankfully, the book is ok.  The mailer was completely ripped open, end to end.  Hard to believe that a mail processing machine did that, but whatever.  The book survived, and it looks like it's going to be a great read!

Not sure if this is the right thread for this, but can anybody tell me if you renew your membership early, will the next renewal date be from the date of the new (early) renewal, or from the original month/day?

It just adds another year from the expiration date.  You don't lose any days.

Cool, thanks, Hokerer.

Got the email saying it shipped on the 13th, but have not received it yet (in GA)...

I pour the first one after dough-in (usually around 1 or 2 PM), but don't have more than three or four before clean up.

I've baked bread and brewed in the same area, on the same day, with no problems.
Cheers!

Emailed this morning.  Thanks, AHA, for the email to let me know this was happening!

I agree with Denny.  Some of this was over my head, but I still learned something that I probably would not have, had the topic been split.  Thanks

I believe all of the enzymes are denatured by the time the wort comes to a boil.  I don't know whether there are any other possible negative impacts, though.
