Toasting hops...
« on: July 22, 2012, 11:43:04 am »
I read an article not too long ago about toasting hops. I was talking with a commercial brewer who is experimenting with toasting hops, and brought up this article I read. He had never heard of anyone else doing this, and asked if I had that article. Problem is, I can't remember where I read it, and every search I do on toasting hops comes up with "hops and toasted malt"  Anyone know of this article, and where I might find it?
Thanks...

Interesting.

Anybody here tried this?
What does the toasting yield to the beer in the end?

Interesting.  I recall a friend of mine  who worked at the Pabst plant in Newark, NJ back in the early 1970's mentioning to me at the time that they were experimenting with toasting hops.  If memory serves, the intention was to use a portion of toasted hops in their already very good bock beer.
Evidently though,  it never went beyond the pilot or experimental stage.  The bock itself underwent a significant change in recipe (and not for the better) in the late 70's...then disappeared altogether.
