Recipe for extract+grain Belgian Golden
« on: December 31, 2012, 05:55:40 PM »
I'm looking to see if anyone has a good recipe for an extract-based Belgian Golden Ale - something similar to Duvel.  I've become obsessed with these, and figure I need to quit wasting money and brew my own.

I'd like to stay away from mash recipes, since brewing is something I have about 6 hours a month to do.

Any help would be great.  Thanks guys!

It's all about the yeast. WLP570 is the Duvel strain, so that's the way to go. Otherwise, keep it simple. 1.070ish, 80% Pilsner Malt Extract, 20% simple sugar, and about 30 IBU's of Saaz at the start of the boil. Pitch in the mid 60's and let it work its way up to the mid 70's.
Check out my blog: Critical Tastings
In Primary: Table Saison, BDG
In Secondary: Blackberry-Lemon Melomel; "Orvalled" Barleywine; Cider; Maple Wine
In Bottles: IIPA; Düsseldorf IPA; Quad; Roast Porter; Helles Hop Hammer; Oatmeal Brown
On Deck: ESB, India Black Saison

I will second what erockph said, and also say to make sure you are getting the freshest extract possible. Buy from someone who has a lot of turnover, or ask you LHBS when their shipment came in. Old extract usually won't ferment down as well. I've made very good Belgians this way.
So it goes.
