vanilla java porter
« on: September 11, 2011, 07:59:51 AM »
I am planning on brewing a porter. I want to split in half between 2 Mr Beer megs so I can have some regular porter and some vanilla java porter. My question is about the vanilla beans. Do I "dry hop" with them? And how many should I use for 2 1/2 gallons?

Yeah, you would dry "bean" with them.  I think one bean for 2.5 gallons would probably be about right.

Careful with storing finished beer for too long in those Mr. Beer fermenters.  The screw on lids let CO2 out when the beer is fermenting but it will also let air in if active fermentation isn't pushing gas out.

Thankyou for your response. I understand about the Mr Beer system. It was how I started brewing, hence possessing the kegs, I did 22 brews in those before going to my 5 gallon system, then finally moving to all grain. I think 2 to 2 1/2 weeks in them is fine.

I just didn't want 5 gallons of an experimental flavored beer.
