Joe Gillian’s Red

Top o’ the mornin’ to ya! With St. Paddy’s Day approaching, this Irish red ale from Amal Turczyn’s book,A Year of Beer, is sure to be a perfect session beer for your St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

This low- to medium-strength beer, has a buttery character, with a well-balanced maltiness and a round, fruity finish. Joe Gillian’s Red will surely make St. Patrick proud, so make sure to brew a few kegs! Sláinte!

Joe Gillian’s Red | Irish Red Ale

Ingredients

  • For 5 gallons (19 L)
    • 7 pounds (3.17 kg) | British two-row malt
    • 1/4 pound (0.12 kg) | British 55° L crystal malt
    • 1/4 pound (0.12 kg) | British 80° L crystal malt
    • 2 ounces (56.7 g) | roasted barley
    • 1 ounce (28.35 g) | Fuggles hops, 4.4% a.a. (60 minutes)
    • 3/4 ounce (21.26 g) | Fuggles hops, 4.4% a.a. (30 minutes)
    • 3/4 ounce (21.26 g) | East Kent Goldings hops, 5.2% a.a. (5 minutes)
    • 1 tsp gypsum added to mash water
    • Wyeast 1968 Special London ale yeast
    • force-carbonate in keg

    Directions
