I don't think it is accurate to call it America's Pastime anymore, since it is 3rd or 4th on the list of favorite sports. I stopped following it years ago. Might try to pick up on it some this year. But "yawn" .... I dunno.

I'm struggling to call a game in Japan the opening game of the 2012 MLB Season.  Didn't they used to call these kinds of thing exhibition games?

I guess I'm just getting old.

Oh I know the Japanese love baseball.  I have a Hiroshima Carps cap hanging in my closet.  I don't have an issue with two US teams playing a Spring game over there either.  I think that's great!  I just have a difficult time seeing a game played in a foreign country, in front of a hometown, but not US, crowd being called the "American Season Opener" (at least in the press in my area).

If the pro teams from Japan played teams from the US during the regular season and could compete for the World Series Title, I wouldn't have a problem with it.  Instead it's a publicity stunt and seems like a MLB comment on US fans.

/stepping off high horse now/

I'm glad Ichiro had a good game!

I love baseball. It's now my favorite sport. Football is a close second. Baseball wins out because it's such a long season compared to football.

I'll be watching my Fightin' Phils try for another world series run. They need some hitters in a big way.

no time clock.
only sport where defense has control of the ball.
90' is a perfect distance(89' more base runners, 91' more throw outs).

i love this sport. even more so since i got the MLB internet radio package a few years ago.  any game, any place with real baseball announcers, not dry tv guys like buck and mccarver.

and, it means spring and long days of sunlight!

I used to list football as my #1, but with all the stuff coming up recently about the sort of post-career problems these guys are having, and the whole Saints pay-per-hit thing, I'm kinda getting turned off to it. Id say baseball, rugby and cricket are all vying for the #1 spot. I like baseball more than the other two for the moment, mostly for nostalgia. About rugby, you'd think soccer/foot would be the big thing for everybody around here, but because of the hooliganism and general attitude of the fans, most 'family' types are flocking to rugby. Everybody has a good time, eats good food, doesn't start fights.

Weaz a big reason for liking baseball is that you don't have to stay glued to the tv to see everything. It's even better over the radio.

I think baseball is about my 20th or 30th favorite sport, behind hurling, football, hockey, and lacrosse.  Before you get to baseball there are some placeholder spots for random Olympic sports like biathlon.  I don't mind going to a baseball game, but that's different.  Watching on TV is too boring.

On the other hand, golf is my favorite sport to nap to.

I think the dumbest part of this is that both teams have more Spring Training games next week. I guess it's to let them get over jet lag, but it seems ridiculous to play two games that count and then play more practice games.

I used to like going to games, especially when I lived 90 mins from Camden Yards. I still go to our minor league games sometimes, but they do have a great fireworks show.

We have the Minor League Iowa Cubs (Chicago Triple A) here in Des Moines.  When the kids were smaller we'd sign them all up for the "Knothole Gang" club and use it as a cheap family outing.  You can't beat $9/kid for 6 games, a t-shirt, a bomb-pop and a small drink at each game.  and GA tickets only $6 (only $5 if you buy a book of ten).  It kinda made baseball fans out of all of them.  Seeing a game at the park is so much more interesting than watching one on TV.  They've seen enough games to make them be able to understand what's happening when listening on the radio too.

I grew up in town in NW noted for it's baseball teams so it's part of my childhood I could share.

Used to get the radio feeds at night from Philly, Boston, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, St Louis, Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland when I was growing up in NJ.  Loved the hometown announcers.

Years ago I told my wife that if she ever caught me watching golf on TV she should wake me up and tell me I'm not old enough to do that.
She's had to tell me more than once.  Does this mean I'm too old?

As an older fart, I seem to remember that the traditional opening day for baseball happened in Cincinnati on or about April 6, which is not only where I used to live, but it's my birthday.  Opening day gets earlier and farther away every year, which is odd for a sport that prides itself so much on tradition.

+1... I love having the game on in the background while I'm doing something else... although I do find myself sitting down riveted at certain times during the game.  It's a relaxing way to enjoy a sporting event.  I don't need everything I do and/or watch to be fast-paced and riveting.  Sometimes a lazy day watching baseball is nice.

I enjoy watching my kids play baseball or football more than I like watching pro sports, that's for sure.
And nothing makes a kid smile more after a game than to hear a parent genuinely say, "I loved watching you play."  That's it--no feedback, no criticism.  Save it for practice on another day.
Title: Re: BASEBALL!
Post by: punatic on March 29, 2012, 06:51:56 PM
I really enjoy baseball because every pitch sets up a different strategy.  Most people don't learn the game well enough to see what's happening at that level, and that's cool.  It's an easy game to watch on many levels.  Hell, going to watch a game at the park is a major social event.

I love listening to games on the radio while I do something else.  I love watching games on my iPad when I'm up camping on the side of Mauna Kea.  I love watching games on the big screen TV.  Modern camera and TV technology lets you see the threads on the ball on a pitch!  I really love going to a game at the park.  The sights, the sounds, the smells...  awesome!

I totally understand why MLB chose to play games in Tokyo.  There's a huge potential fan base there.  I wish they would bring a few games here to Hawaii.  LOTS of baseball fans here too.

Part of the beauty of baseball is that there is no clock.  It's great for a brew day - some nice weather, the aroma of boiling wort and a ball game on the radio - that's about as good as it gets with one's clothes on.  I like all kinds of sports, but there are only three I'm interested in if my favorite team isn't playing - MLB, NFL and Rugby.

Go Tribe!

Go Browns!

Right on narvin - Lucky you!  The worst day spent at the ball park is better than the best day spent as an employee!  Being in a ball park is an awesome experience.  Everything is right there.

I have been enjoying the she-it out of the DirecTV free preview of MLB Extra Innings.  Over the past few days I have been writing annual UIC status reports for several clients.  Fairly time consuming, but well compensated for work.  My home office work space includes a 46" HDTV monitor.  I gotta tell ya, I am really going to miss Extra Innings when the preview is over on Monday.  Or maybe not.  I may bite.  There is no rewind on streaming radio broadcasts.  Maybe I can subscribe to both.   8)

Checked into the Mariners schedule during the weeks around NHC '12.  Mostly they are away.  If I show up the weekend before I can catch them at home vs the Giants.  Hmmmm...  tempting, very tempting...

Nice game tonight!  This is the year... that the Orioles break 500... maybe.  What is encouraging is that the young prospects who were rushed to the majors are getting more comfortable, with more experience and some depth in the organization.

If everything goes well, it's going to take at least another year or two for the team to really be competitive.  So, they shouldn't do too well this year.  I'm hoping the new regime knows how to draft, given the picks they've wasted in the past decade.

Also, as much as I enjoy that classy lady in the Sox outfit depicted above (for her assets), I enjoyed the last game of the season in 2011 more.  When I was at the yard, outlasted a rain delay, and saw the O's come back from behind and beat the Sox, and literally two minutes later they showed the Rays on the jumbotron beating the Yankees and eliminating Boston.  :D  We watched the NL games in the club level during the storm and saw the amazing game between the Braves and Cards as well.  One of the best baseball days I can remember.

Well, we are at game 3 of the World Series.  Boy has it been an amazing postseason this year!

Tigers sweep the Yankees in the ALCS.
Giants come back from being down 1-3 against the Cards (the reigning World Champs) to win the NL Pennant in 7.

Giants club the bejeebers out of the Tigers in the first two games of the series...
Pablo Sandoval hits three out of the park in game 1!
Game 2 in SF was baseball at it's highest level of play!  The 1st inning play at the plate.  The dribbler bunt down the 3rd baseline...  yeah baby!

Off to Motown for game 3 this evening!

Woo Hoo!  Go Giants!

...And the Dolphins have a rookie quarterback who is developing into what we've been waiting for since Dan Marino retired.

Man I love this time of the year; when the MLB and NFL seasons overlap.  Especially when a team I follow is playing for the World Championship!

The beer is in the cooler.  The grill is ready to be fired.  This is going to be an awesome weekend!

The Tigers are a good team.  Look at what they did to the Yankees.  I'm sure they will be in the thick of it again next year.  (I like any team that can make the Yankees look that bad).

Pretty crazy when the two things we had going for us, power hitting and pitching, went totally cold in the world series. Not the time you want that to happen. I have to believe we'll be right back close next year with Martinez coming back and hopefully figuring out the bullpen.

Congrats to the Giants, they were the better team throughout and it showed in the end.
