Title: NHC 2013 Hotel?
Post by: guido on July 02, 2012, 08:55:54 PM
Has any word leaked about what hotel will be hosting the 2013 NHC?  Even though I can't make reservations for months, I'm dying to scout out ther area.

It's somewhere in downtown.

That confirms (I hope) the rumor I heard of Center City.

In the members meeting, Gary said they were planning on 2500 for 2013. So it will be a big hotel.

See you in Philadelphia!

Also, if you attended the conference in Seattle: Please take the Conference Survey (http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2012AHAConference) We use it to help "tune" the conference. (And please only if you attended the conference)

With nothing better to do today, I started to check out hotels in the Center City area that could accommodate the conference.  Two look promising.  However, parking is extra--just over $45 a day--at both of them.  I'm thinking that's the going rate for Philly hotel parking.  I hope the conference got us a discount or can at least recommend a parking garage that's close by.

See, I don't have a nice way to put it, this wait stuff is BS. Prior to last year the conference was available for purchase by November and the hotel was publicized as well. By the time I had decided whether or not I could attend the conference last year it was already sold out.

Not a bad idea  but there is a lot of hotels in that area.  Is there any major benefit to getting into the conference hotel?

Thanks for the advice though,  and a quick reply to my 1st post on the aha forum.

For ANY conference, having your room nearby is nice. You can go back when you want, don't have to schlep stuff with you all day. Take a nap. Etc.  A block or two away is fine, but too far and it starts to cramp your style.  I imagine this is even more true for AHA since it is LONGER - 8am until 11pm or later and includes drinking.

It's a hell of a lot easier stumbling into an elevator than having to stumble across the street or down the road.  The Westin last year was connected by a sky bridge but still nicer just to jump on the elevator.
At least in most hotels, you have a one in 36-45 chance of getting the right floor.  ;)

That's an interesting move to release the hotel info before we can book at the discounted rate. Either I get a room now for a higher rate or wait and risk that there will be no more rooms left.

They also haven't decided on the speakers yet, so I don't even know if I will be going.

The AAA rate is $332 per night :o  ...I'd wait.

I assume since they said the conference was going to accommodate 2500, they'd have more than 100 rooms for the block...although it will sell out quick, I'm sure.

Are there any commuter lots on public transportation that can be used for parking once checked in at the hotel. Have done that in DC, worked great.

Kathryn Porter, who organizes the speaker stuff, has been moved to overall event manager for the BA.  Someone new will be taking over her position and until then there are no speaker confirmations.  I get the impression that will happen very soon.

You probably know as much about parking in Philly as I do.  A google link www.philadelphia.centralparking.com (http://www.philadelphia.centralparking.com) took me to the parking garages in town.  I clicked on the Center link to the right and found a garage at 800 Market Street (4 blocks away) for $18/day with an printable online coupon.  There's also a garage at the 1500 block of Market Street, but that must be a ritzier neighborhood because it was $25/day.  If anyone has better intel then me about the parking situation, please chime in by all means.

My brother lives in a suburb of Philly.  He'd love to move closer to city center, but he says the parking would cost almost as much as the housing.  I will check with him to see if has any helpful hints.

I'm sure these details will be coming soon, but can anyone tell me if the conference is at the host hotel or the Convention Center?

I was walking the streets of this area ( on Google Earth ) and it seems like the convention center is connected to several hotels via skybridges, etc.

Just curious, but if you can't say, I have no problem waiting for the official announcement.

Thanks.

Bluesman said in reply #20 it's not at the convention center.  At the conference website, on the "about" tab, it says that most of the conference takes place at the hotel.  However, I do think the hotel and the cc are connected.

Anyway, I booked my hotel on points. Thanks for pointing out the information was available. I still think waiting to announce the hotel is BS. It's fine to not make a block of rooms available until a particular date, but knowing the hotel/local allows planning and for folks like myself who stay in a hotel most of the year the ability to use points to book a room.

Call this number:  1-877-212-5752 and tell them you're with the conference.

I finally got thru to the hotel and they gave me this number.  Sounds like it's selling fast.

Thanks for this, it worked for me and I am telling the other members of my club who have been on hold.  There was no wait it went right to someone and I'm done.  Now I just hope registration opens on time because I will only have a half hour to get it done before a big meeting at work today.

My wife ended up on hold for a long time on the 877 number. I managed to get through to the Marriot and get reservations.

The NHC has done blowed up real good!

Great Jeff! It'll be good to see another Michigander there.

So the link still isn't up, should we be anticipating the registration process to start late?  I might have to get someone else to register for me when they finish their own.  I'm worried that I might be cutting it close since I am only available until 3:30 today to try to register and the wife wont be home from work yet either to do it.

I don't think so.  The conference is done by the AHA.  The rooms are done by the hotel and a housing bureau.  I think the AHA will have the link up and running at the right time, since they control the servers.

I think the link is out there, just no one updated the website (ahaconference.org) to reflect it.

Got through quickly using the 877 number. The nice lady I spoke with said she'd had a lot of calls from us today. :D

I think this may have been answered already but it is refundable for those that are concerned. Card is just holding room for now.

I hope so, that does make me feel better about it.  I do have a plan in place in case 3:15 rolls around and I haven't been able to register yet.  One of the other members of my club agreed to do it for me once he has finished registering.

Yes, the lady I spoke with said you have to cancel at least 3 days before the registration.  The card you gave is just to hold the room and when you check out of your room you can leave it on that card or use a different one.

Quincy, since you may be in a rush, they just made a change last night to the conference tickets and made the banquet an add on to each of the packages.  So the full package is $205 plus $50 for the banquet.  I'd hate to have you get a ticket and miss out on the banquet.

Thanks, I did see that last night.  I know the wife will be angry if I miss out on the Banquet tickets, she is looking forward to that part.  Well she is looking forward to all of it but she specifically said she wants to go to the banquet.

The Banquet meal is now something to look forward to, as Sean Paxton has done some wonderful stuff based on local ingredients.

Then there are the announcements, the business things, and the awards for the competition. Those have become more interesting fo rme over the years.

but don't quote me on that.

I don't understand why when planning a conference for 2500 the AHA didn't announce multiple hotels at once.

It is most likely part of the contract with the hotel.  They want to be guaranteed so many room nights when they provide the discounted rate.  Even though it is a certainty that the hotel will sell out, they need their assurances.

Oh that's probably true. I just figured that with two Marriott properties a block away there should be more rooms, but then the Marriott's manager would want to fill their own hotel first.

If you don't mind a short walk or taxi ride, Hotwire has some great deals for Saturday night. $118-$135 for 3 or 4 star hotels that are in the area. I would assume the previous few days are cheap too if you miss out on the main hotel.

Careful about non-refundable rates though since conference registration is not open yet.

The Residence Inn (one block away) had single king rooms for the same rate with AAA. They include breakfast too.

The Hilton Garden Inn is adjacent and probably connected to the Convention Center which has a skybridge to the Marriott. I think that's the only one.

I don't think there are any. The east side of the Marriott is connected to the Convention Center (I'm almost positive). But I believe that's the only bridge. But, there's also a complex of underground walkways that go under the convention center, the plaza, and lead to mass transit. But there are a lot of hotels in the near vicinity. And it's late June, so the weather shouldn't be a problem.

The Philadelphia Downtown Marriott has already sold out. :P
The AHA has noted that its next hotel is the Courtyard Philadelphia Downtown, but it has not yet posted booking information on its registration W-WW page.
Looking at my AAA Tourbook, other hotels in the vicinity include the aforementioned Residence Inn by Marriott, the Loews Philadelphia, a Hilton Garden Inn Philadelphia Center City, and a Hampton Inn Center City.
I have managed to register for the entire conference, and shall be motoring (from Chicago). I am seeking somebody with whom to share a room for Wed-Sat (or Thu-Sat) of the conference.
The last time I was in Philadelphia, I found an unmetered parking spot two blocks away from a subway station. I parked the car there, rode the subway to my events, and checked back on it the next day (moving it slightly). Obviously, it was still there, and hadn't suffered any damage. ;)
I'll be checking this thread for more information about parking. Thank you.

If anyone is looking for a hotel near the Marriott, try the Loews across the street - its close (a stumble across Market St) and they have some rooms available at reasonable rates (I found a room as cheap as the Conference hotel)- I suspect the lower rates will be unavailable soon though.

I received a confirmation from the housing bureau when I booked my room yesterday.  When those reservations are loaded into the hotels system, will a separate confirmation from the hotel be sent?

Just curious.

Thanks.

I'm not sure on this but I put my marriott rewards number in and after registering I was able to see the reservation when I logged into my account on their main website

On another note, some of us are thinking about taking Amtrak from Lynchburg, Va into Philly. Appears to be only $55 round trip. My question is for people in Philly, which stop should we get off on in Philly? One is called "North Philadelphia" and the other is "30th Street". Which one is closer to the hotel? How far away is it, would we ned a cab? Thanks.

Thanks for all the replies.  Unfortunately, I was using an Amtrak app, and it had a bug.  It was only giving me the price one way...  The return trip is well over $100.  We will be driving instead.

Yeah, Sundays on Amtrak are expensive. But have you priced parking nearby? It's comparable to Amtrak tickets. You might consider parking outside the city and taking the train in. Also, SEPTA is the local rail service and it goes as far south as Newark, DE.
