Title: What have I done?
Post by: a10t2 on November 15, 2012, 08:20:24 PM
As it turns out, today is the last day of "work" for both me and my business partner. One planned, one not so much. We're now full-time owners of a brewery that only exists on paper.

This is probably the most terrifying thing I've ever done.

when the universe decides that you MUST do something there is very little that can be done about it except to sit back and enjoy. Terror, while... terrifying, can be a very enlivening experience.

Good luck

Awesome!  Super happy for you Sean, keep us posted and give us some details when you can.

I've been trying not to spam people with every little box checked off. At this point we have a location selected and are a little over halfway through the fundraising. We do have a blog, Facebook page, Twitter account, etc. for folks who want to subscribe. I'll definitely update once there's something definitive to report, but we're shooting for a May opening.

“If you're going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don't even start. This could mean losing girlfriends, wives, relatives and maybe even your mind. It could mean not eating for three or four days. It could mean freezing on a park bench. It could mean jail. It could mean derision. It could mean mockery--isolation. Isolation is the gift. All the others are a test of your endurance, of how much you really want to do it. And, you'll do it, despite rejection and the worst odds. And it will be better than anything else you can imagine. If you're going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It's the only good fight there is.”

― Charles Bukowski

Best of luck Sean. Now I have one more reason to come to Colorado and drink beer.

Great news. Good luck with all the planning and licensing stuff. You've got experience and a great deal of knowledge on your side based on what I've gleaned from you at NHC and on the forum. I think you'll be a success and a great addition to the craft beer community.

3 of our local club members just became official this week. "Two Shy Brewing".  They've worked all the social events in town with free samples and done a lot of social network stuff over the course of the last year to create a following before getting "legal". They don't have anywhere near your expertise, but they have a passion that is going to hopefully carry them far...and they're all great guys.

I'm excited for all of you.

Thanks for all the well-wishes. It really means a lot.

Expertise... Maybe not so much. I know brewing, but everything else is just getting made up as we go. I've been helping out as an ersatz consultant for a group of friends who just opened a nano (plug: Black Acre Brewing) without any brewing experience per se. Your friends will be shocked at just how much they pick up, and how quickly. If and when they get stuck, let them know they can drop me an email.

For example, the nav links on their website are misdirects. ;)

Yeah yeah, everyone's your best friend when there's swag involved. ::)

On the plus side, the text is blue, so it increases mash efficiency by 2-3% if you wear it on brew day.

I was hoping to round out the set with ones from breweries owned by forum members (Yellow Hammer, Dungeness, Lazy Monk, am I forgetting any?) but I can't find shirts on those websites.  Hint hint.

Been meaning to put swag on our site for some time now (BTW: It's "Yellowhammer", all one word, state bird of Alabama - lil' pet peeve of mine. ;) ) But I'd upright trade for any other brewer's shirt out there. Just need an address and size (and a promise ;) )

I've kinda dropped off lately from the forum... new kid, buying house, new job, move twice, blah blah blah...

Anyway, we live in Leadville now and there's a rumor going around that a brewery was going to open up.  I had a feeling the rumor was true when your name appeared with Leadville behind it in the recent Zymurgy article.  Now I know for sure that the rumor is true.  I am very pleased a brewery is opening, and the thought has weighed greatly on my mind to put a plan together for one... I digress.

Long story, welcome to town!  I assume you're living here now?  Where are you setting up shop?  The place on 7th St that was for sale?  I eyed that place...  That's my best guess since you said you're living upstairs.

If you're ever down for meeting up over a beer, give a shout.  I've got fresh homebrew in the kegerator.
