Title: Do you hate to be corrected?
Post by: ccfoo242 on May 12, 2013, 02:37:12 PM
Scenario:
-You share some infographic on Facebook that makes some claim (political, food science, etc)
-I comment with a single link to a snopes or politifact or factcheck article with references that demonstrates that the claim is wrong.

What is your response?

I've been accused of being ANGRY so I stopped including my own commentary when I post the link. Now I'm accused of being offensive because I shouldn't correct family members like that.

Personally, if I make a statement that is demonstrably incorrect, I want people to correct me.

If they don't want to be corrected they shouldn't post inaccurate information, especially when a quick snopes check almost always reveals whether those passed along emails/links/pictures/etc. have any merit or not.

People want to be able to post their tirades without being challenged or having to think about their nonsense. Well, facebook isn't designed for one way communication (but twitter is). Personally I gave up trying to represent truth to many people on facebook and took them out of my news stream because I don't have an interest in seeing that much crazy and those people don't have an interest in the facts even if it pistolwhipped them in the face.

I have been corrected on a few things on facebook, and while it stings the ego a bit, I'd prefer to be pointed out than put forward something that is untrue.

I don't care if those people are insulted or not.  I post the correction for everyone else who has to read it.  People have a habit of believing what they read.  Whatever nonsense was posted by the original poster will likely get shared onward by someone else, either on Facebook or in real life.  I figure that correcting it up front is doing a favor to all those people, even if the original poster gets their feelings hurt from their embarrassment.  There's already too much misinformation out there.

You should stay off facebook.

I agree with the OP and do the same thing and if someone doesn't like it, well, too bad!

No different then trying to help someone on a forum, if I provide bad advice, answer something incorrectly or someone has a better idea then I'm all for hearing about it and learning as well:)

While I still think ya'll should stay off facebook, there is a definite "right" and "wrong" way to correct someone online. Just posting a link may not seem personal or sensitive or whatever people are looking for. Here's a for instance (kinda): For a long time I used to think emoticons were corny and childish and silly, but then I realized how far they actually go in portraying levity and/or friendliness, etc. So if you say "I'm making a Belgium Ale" I may correct you and tease you a little but if I uase a ;) it makes in all ok. :)

^This. This may not surprise anyone here, but I tend to speak my mind. If people don't like it, they delete me. If someone is really obtuse and aggressively ignorant on my own feed, I delete them. It all works out in the end.

That is so true. I've been called a lot of things, but "tactful" is not one of them.

No lie, this is one of my biggest pet peeves. People, regardless of which side of the political spectrum they're on, love to "share" or "forward" some stupid piece of drivel that supports whatever opinion they have, regardless of facts. If ignorance and confirmation bias had a love child, it would be a shared infographic on Facebook.

Priceless! I can't stand it when someone tries to share me a bit of their "wisdom" in email as a tag line. I just can't stand it! STFU up already!

You misspelled "use" :))

I've gotten myself in trouble for correcting people, but it's never happened on Facebook. I don't have much sympathy though. You want to post dumb stuff without commentary? Buy a diary.

ah, the lovely nirvana of not being on Facebook.

i jumped off almost 3 years ago. not for correction stuff, but for 3 separate are-you-kidding-me-i'm-a-grown -up-not-in-high-school-anymore situations. one of which because i friended someone another friend didn't like and the fallout it caused. seriously.

Facebook is great.... for finding out how stupid your friends and family are.  You're not going to change anyone, so  put their status on ignore  :o

It's not just Facebook, though. I still have a few people who just email their BS. The 2008 elections were the worst.

All this is a great example of how people fall for confirmation bias. They accept any claim as long as it adheres to their current beliefs.

This is an amusing thread. I don't mind being corrected, but I generally avoid posting crap that requires correction. My brother, on the other hand, is a bit different. He'll post whatever he wants to believe is true and states it as fact. I called him on it a couple times, so he unfriended me. We haven't communicated since.

I've considered dumping facebook, but when used correctly (like hiding the idiots), it's actually pretty nice. I have a large family and probably wouldn't even know that my niece had another kid if it weren't on FB.

I've replied to my family with so many links from snopes that they don't even bother sending me that kind of thing any more.

And yeah, on facebook I just hide or unfriend people who post stupid or annoying stuff.  It works fine.

I know I SHOULD just hide/unfriend everyone who posts stupid crap, but I have a compulsion to try and make people see the truth. Everyone's entitled to their own opinions, but they aren't entitled to their own facts.

I'm all about being open to new ideas and perspectives, but only when it's a two-way street. I hate people who think you should be open to their view, but they're not open to yours.

One big beef I have is that a lot of people want to throw the burden of proof back at you when they are the ones making the claim.

I recently asked someone where they got their numbers from and they said I was lazy and should look it up myself.

Hmm... Burden of Proof, I'll have to use that as a beer name!

I have come to the point where I only correct when it is something like the stupid cut onion deal or some other "medical miracle" that the pioneers used.  Something that might prevent someone from actually seeking medical attention, of course now that I think of it, maybe I should just let Darwinian evolution take its course. ;)

What's that saying, a lie flies around the world while the truth is putting its boots on?

Trying to correct people is probably a fool's errand. While you're carefully considering and rebutting their claims, they're already onto the next bit of misinformation.

I call anyone who disagrees with me a Nazi fascist totalitarian racist infidel and just leave it at that. When it comes to religion and politics there's really no point in arguing.

I agree - I have some friends that I disagree with politically but I can have a rational discussion with them, no problem.  It's the ones who say their bit and then jam their fingers in their ears I can't take.

No one likes to be wrong and no one likes to have it publicly pointed out.

I used to respond to family members directly with no CC's on stupid, blatantly incorrect info they would send out and gently inform them of what was incorrect and where they could check such things.  It seemed to work for awhile, or so it seemed, until I found out that they just removed me from their mailing lists.  I don't necessarily miss knowing about the next family reunion but it seemed extreme to need to make my younger brother promise to notify if Mom dies.  I really would like to go to the funeral (and not to defend my position in the estate  ;D ).

Now I've decided that I will just delete/ignore info that I disagree with (assuming I'm ever added back to the mail lists).  And I have no use for Facebook, Twitter or any sites that expose person information to the world, even when setup your security "correctly", and just waste time.

This xkcd comic sums me up best:

I actually like being able to keep up with what's happening with some of my relatives on FB. definitely have to unsub from certain people though.
