Title: Who's going to NHC?
Post by: Jimmy K on May 31, 2013, 08:12:51 PM
It's only a month away, so who should I look for?

My club will be at club night too. Delmarva United Homebrewers.

First time for me. I'm excited. gonna burn up a big chunk of my vacation budget for the year but...

Luckily my wife has friends in Philly so I only had to buy 1 ticket and no hotel bill.

I'll likely be the one of they guys in a kilt and a fedora.

Can't pass up one on the East coast.  This will be my 2nd.

My wife and I will be there again this year. After last year, I think she approves of making it a yearly vacation.

We should plan some kind of Nametag sticker this year, so we can find each other.

I'll be there and will be doing a pouring shift for the Brewing Network on club night.  There are 4 of us from the Seacoast Homebrew Club going, but just as attendees...no organized club event.

Who isn't?

Actually, after being skunked last year, I am attending for the first time, with my brother.

I am actually kind of nervous.

I'll be there as well with my club (see signature line). We're pouring at club might as well. Did I mention first timer.

No. 6 for me.  Be sure to pace yourself.  Don't be a kid in the candy store like I almost was when I attended in Chicago.

Of course you will need to restrain yourself on Friday night and make it to my presentation on 'Historic Water' at 9 am on Saturday.  Remember...pacing.

I think I am going to bring a pack of those "Hello My Name Is" stickers, and give them out to any forum members I see. Then people can just write their forum name on it, and stick it to their nametag.

Well, dang it, I didn't register in time so I'll miss the fun.  Ironically enough,  I'm going to be in and out of Philly most days that week for interviews and a few auditions.  I'll probably be mere blocks away from the festivities.

If there are any impromptu gatherings of note outside of the official convention stuff, Let me know...I'd love to pop in, say  hi, and have a beer or seven.
Sure would be fun to put faces to the great people I've met on the forums.

I'll be there all week, so I am up for anything. When is BNA8? I would say another night the same week, before the conference really kicks off. We could also plan some sort of dinner on Friday night if one of the locals knows of a good place that won't hate us for having 15-20 some odd people all paying separately.

Unless the NHC comes to Boston or Providence it will be several years before I'll be able to make it to the conference. It was awesome having all the seminars online last year. Looking forward to everyone's talks this year.

What can't drive 5 hours? :)

Sheesh! (We drove LA -> Seattle last year to have the club booth.)

And I just realized this will be #11 for me:

2001 - Los Angeles
2003 - Chicago
2004 - Las Vegas
2006 - Orlando
2007 - Denver
2008 - Cincinnati
2009 - Oakland
2010 - Minneapolis
2011 - San Diego
2012 - Seattle
2013 - Philadelphia

OK Drew - thanks for the starters, let's see... My first was in 1997 - what a nob I was! Spent it in a haze.

1997 - Cleveland, OH
2000 - Livonia, MI
2002 - Irving, TX
2003 - Chicago, IL
2004 - Las Vegas, NV
2005 - Baltimore, MD
2006 - Orlando, FL
2007 - Denver, CO
2008 - Cincinnati, OH
2009 - Oakland, CA
2010 - Minneapolis, MN
2011 - San Diego, CA
2012 - Seattle, WA
2013 - Philadelphia, PA

So this will be my 14th NHC and my 12th in a row. Good fun, good learnings, good people. It's all good. Having a water bottle with me at most times (and drinking from it) was one lesson learned, taking power naps helps me as well. Jeff and Sue Rankert also taught me the importance of B vitimans (in the handy Propel powdered packets -easy to carry on planes).  Still haven't learned how to drink less than copious amounts at the Brewing Network parties, but otherwise I am learning...

Well Crispy...you got me beat by a longshot. Speaking of Longshot, I entered a beer in the SA Longshot this year again. This will be my third NHC. I was in San Diego and Seattle. Looking forward to more of the same great fun.

A forum meetup would be great!

I'll be the guy running around at club night, making sure everyone has enough ice and the like. :)

So for those with the past experience, can you recommend a good time and place to have a Forum "Meet and Greet"? (not hook up)

How's that Jimmy?   :)

Dave

Post by: hopfenundmalz on June 03, 2013, 06:00:20 PM
Crispy has the good advice - stay hydrated. Drink water often. There are usually the big coolers of water around, so use them. The B vitamins in a drink like Propel before bed gets you more water and the vitamins and minerals to help your body recover before you get up and do it all over the next day. One must be aware that it will not fix a day and night of stupidity!

Take time to eat right, don't get so caught up that you forget to have a good meal.

Pace your self. It can be a long conference, so be there at the finish.

Directly accross from the hotel is Reading Terminal market with tons of food vendors. Could always meet there (or meet in the hotel lobby and walk there). There are places to sit, but finding room might depend on how busy it is. And in such a huge place we have the risk of heading cats.

I really like the Reading Terminal Market, but it has no space to get more than a few people together in any one spot.  I suggest we pick up some food from there and meet in the hospitality suite on Thursday after the seminars and before Pro Night.

I'm going....not wearing anything special, though.  I'm also not affiliated with a club.  I guess you could say I'm going solo.  I only live about 50 miles NW of Philly, so I'm taking the train back and forth.  $90 total to commute is still cheaper than a hotel room....and I get to sleep in my own bed.

It will be an interesting NHC for me. I am driving up to PA with family the week before conference starts. We are spending a couple nights in Hershey (which is about 20 minutes from where I grew up) and then driving to Philly, spending a few nights there and then taking the train to NYC for 2 nights before coming back to Philly for another night or two. Then family drives home and I fly out after NHC.

I was only able to register for the Friday-Saturday slot, so I suppose I'll miss the Thursday get-together (and Pro-Night  :'().  Hope to bump into the forum crowd at some point.  I'll likely be in a black utilikilt much of the time.

I'm pretty sure the Fri/Sat ticket also includes Pro Night, just not the Thursday seminars.

I am going now. YIPPEE ;D Although I might not bring any beer with me due to the $25 bag check fee, but, hey, maybe I could ship it, then use the box to ship beer that I buy there back home to myself. Yeah, that might work.

Does anyone know if there is a special address to ship beer to the conference hotel?

You can take a lot more beer in a checked bag for 25 than shipping it

This is probably what you want:
http://www.ahaconference.org/events/beer-services/general-info/

The personal small package pickup info is at the bottom.  Or just send to the hotel and have them hold it for your arrival.

Well I am, but I'm thinking you knew that. ;)

I have a ticket for the BN party but all afternoon free, assuming there's such a thing as an on-time flight. Anyone interested in a late lunch/early dinner? It looks like there are at least three brewpubs within walking/subway distance of the Marriott.

I think that's just for vendors. I could be wrong about that, but people should double-check before overwhelming the hotel with unexpected packages.

This will be my fourth NHC--it's so much fun!  Unfortunately, my job situation will only allow me to get away for Thursday-Saturday; would have liked to get away for a few more days to see Philadelphia!
I have an extra Friday-Saturday registration--when I purchased in February, I thought my son would be able to go along.  But, his job situation won't allow (and didn't find out until a week ago).  I'd like to sell this for $200; please reply if you or a friend would like to attend.  Surely someone in PA/NJ/DE would like to go! I may also have an extra banquet ticket ($50)

There are several really nice "gastro pubs" in Philly.  My two favorites are Standard Tap and Memphis Tap House.  Both serve mostly local beers and great food.  Next door to Standard Tap is a good beer store, too.
It's a short cab ride from Center City to Fishtown and Northern Liberties, but worth it.
Oh, and Kraftwork is also very good.

I'm assuming 6-ish since we were talking about buying food at Reading Terminal to bring back to our meeting place. All first round beer judging will be done in the morning session. Only BOS, cider and mead will be judged in the afternoon session, so lots of judges will probably have the afternoon free.

I managed to pack 18 12floz bottles into a suitcase that I lined with multiple layers of foam. Each bottle was wrapped in a sock and then two layers of bubble wrap. The case is packed tightly enough that nothing moves at all.

I am now accepting bets on how many bottles arrive in philly.

I have seen a couple of references that this is only the second NHC on the East Coast. One was in the Philly Beer Scene, and mentioned the Manchester NH conf. as the first.

What about Baltimore and Orlando (which is about as close to the Atlantic as Manchester)?

sounds similar to what I had last year flying to NHC.  Lots of effort on a great packing job and padding.  I arrived at Sea-Tac to zero broken/missing bottles.  However I found TSA had unpacked each bottle, including taking each out of their Zip-Loc and had then placed all the bottles back on top of the clothes and shoved all the packing material into a pile in one corner.  So, basically my bottles were really well protected for the drive from my house to the Wichita airport.  I'm still astonished I had no breakage, as several bottles were definitely touching each other.

Carry-on only for me this year; no beer.  Next year I'll drive.

cheers--
--Michael

I have seen a couple of references that this is only the second NHC on the East Coast. One was in the Philly Beer Scene, and mentioned the Manchester NH conf. as the first.

What about Baltimore and Orlando (which is about as close to the Atlantic as Manchester)?

Hey, I'm on the east coast in Manchester right now...East Coast of the Merrimack River  ;D

But I can be at the ocean in about 35 minutes.

I don't believe they allow alcohol to be transported on public transportation.  I may be wrong, though, you could call them and find out.  Bus or train?

Train. i'll just have to drive it down. Trying to avoid that.

The Liberty Well will have beer served by clubs almost all the time that something major isn't happening (like during club night). I think it's open late morning - 2am every day.  Many expo vendors will have beer too. Seminars will often serve examples that go with talks too.

Thanks Jimmy.  So I'll be able to grab a brew and go to our meeting?  And if I want people to try mine, I should bring some samples.  Hence the luggage convo?

It is hard NOT to get a beer during the day at the conference. Often samples are part of the first seminar in the morning.

Liberty Well. Often there will be beers on tap at the vendors booths.

I sat at a 9am Mead seminar last year by Michael Fairbrother.  That's a hearty way to start the day with sample after sample of mead.  He had so many extra bottles he was encouraging people to take them home.

Philly is 58 miles from the Atlantic Ocean.
Manchester is 34 miles.
Baltimore is 116 miles.
Orlando is 45 miles.

Technically none of them are ON the east coast.  Close enough for a homebrewers' association this size though!   8)

Let's see. This is the 20th Anniversary of the fabled "Crazy Train" from Chicago, IL. to Portland, OR. {It'll never let us get away with that again!} I still have the T-Shirt, the green jacket, the neck glass, the early-90s Chicago Beer Society cap, and even the Genesee Cream Ale soft-sided luggage. Probably only the T-shirt, neck glass and cap will be in Philadelphia, PA.
Which AHA Conferences have I attended? Hmmm...
In 1994, I was a World Cup Soccer volunteer during June; I made a cameo appearance one night in Milwaukee, WI.

I will be motoring in from Chicago this year. Wednesday night will be in Youngstown, OH. I hope to get to the Marriott by 4:00 pm on Thursday.

I guess my only option is to bring the keg into work. It would get up to room temp. Sadly, there is probably 20 walk in coolers here, but kegs are not really welcome in them.

My condolences about your mother, Denny.

If I recall correctly, I think Arizona has both Leinenkugel's and Genesee. In Los Angeles, CA. in 2001, somebody had to bootleg Genesee Cream Ale from Arizona for a seminar.

{O.K. When was there the homebrewers' conference in Milwaukee, WI.? I know I wasn't registered.} :-\

Oh, one last thing: I am looking for a roommate for Thursday - Saturday. I have a room at the Courtyard for those three nights.

Te SEPTA train stops between the gate and baggage claim.  Just go down the steps and wait for it.  If there's no time to buy a ticket at the machine, the conductor will sell you one.  Get off at Market East.

Market East is right below the convention center.  The hotel is up Market Street a block from that.  Reading Terminal Market is across the street from the hotel.

Rush hour traffic is no fun anywhere in a big city, but Philly is nowhere near as bad as LA or NYC.

I should have driven down yesterday!  I'm about 35 minutes away in Valley Forge.  If you have a car and want to get some history in, it's a great place.  Just do it late mid morning-mid afternoon.  Traffic on the Schuylkill (I76) can be a b****.  But, like Red said, nothing like LA or NYC.

See you guys tomorrow.
