Title: What do you like besides homebrew
Post by: scottyb on November 09, 2009, 03:07:07 PM
In the interest of friendly banter, what are you hobbies or other interests?

Mine are, paranormal investigations, whitewater kayaking, snow skiing, hunting(got a 6 point the other day), cooking out on the grill/smoker.

Forgot to add that I spend a fair amount of time in the garden too, coming up on third year hops.

Gardening/Landscaping in the spring & summer.
Catching up on some reading and camping in the summer - though we didn't get out much this year (babies and campfires don't mix well)
Fall - taxi the oldest around to her various organized activities (its not what I want/like to do, but I don't seem to have time for much else)
Fall/Winter - PC gaming or catching up on some reading at night, playing with the kids any chance I get (especially outside)

My other hobbies are wine making, cooking at a gourmet level, collecting Swiss automatic movement dive watches and tinkering with their inward movements. I had a new fetish but have pretty well nipped that in the bud but I was starting to acquire quite a few Japanese chef knives. I have bought the equivalent of 4-5 complete sets of chef knives in the past 2-3 years. Normally though the first thing I would of stated was Jeeps but I am currently Jeep-less and am not going to look for another for a while.

Hiking and backpacking mostly. I also currently run about 26-30 miles a week. Artist by profession (well, graphic designer technically but I went to art school and do a lot of illustration). I play guitar sporadically and read regularly. I live to cook too ("live" is not a typo  ;)).

Work, so I can afford the homebrew.  ;D  Actually I enjoy fishing, walking (it would be called hiking where majorvices lives but we just call it walking here ;)), gardening and most importantly, spending as much time as possible with the family.

LOL! I think you would find the terrain behind my house surprisingly challenging even though it barely tops out at 2000 ft. Or maybe not.  8)

Ha I bet you're right.  We're at about 2,200 ft. and rolling hills, not mountains...  That's why we call it walking I guess..  ;D

So much to do, so little time to get it all in.
Jobs are a pain. ;)

In summer, I crave the wilderness,
nothing quite like putting all you need on your back
and heading out into areas with little to no people.

I have animals, and they take up a lot of my time.

I love to grow plants, garden and flowers mostly.
I spend a lot of time irrigating.

Ski all winter, free heel trecking mostly,
dogs almost always go.

Cutting wood and stacking against the winter.

Cheers.

Man, I envy you!  My wife and I are hoping to buy our first house next summer and I would love to find a place with a decent spread so I can have a big garden.

What's your favorite Martin?  My dad has a D-42.  Someday, I'll own an HD-28V.   8)

Get a good tractor first! :D That's a lot of work but very rewarding. You certainly won't have to pay any gym fees.

I've got a D-15 custom w/spruce top & rosewood back and sides. Always wanted a D-18.

I read.  Or at least I used to.  I'm getting back into brewing because I really don't have a good answer to this question.  I spend time with my son and wife, work more than I should, and I'm in an EMBA program which takes up a huge amount of time.  I decided I needed to have something which was fun for me and didn't involve revenue recognition, weighted average cost of capital, or dirty diapers.  I probably won't get to brew as frequently as I'd like to but I'm damn sure going to try to get in as much as I can.

A few years ago there was a good podcast called Linux Reality:
http://linuxreality.com/
Most of the free software lives around Linux OS but there are also other OS-es with free software/open source software projects.
There is a lot of blogs and web sites dedicated to this subject.
You could also check our LUG (Linux User Group) web site.
http://eclug.homelinux.org/
It has a lot of news info and How Tos.
Thank you for the interest.
If you have more questions, let me know.

Lately-Daddy Duty

I like: Camping, Mountian Biking, Going to the beach.

I also do a lot of gardening-more landscaping.  Lots of DIY stuff around the house.  Refurbing, replacing, retrofitting, etc.

Daddy Duty has also crimped travel, but I enjoy that too.

I hear you on the daddy duty.

I used to be really into backpacking.  Back in the day before I became a corporate whore I was a BSA backpacking merit badge instructor.  Did a month on the AT after I graduated from high school.  I've always wanted to do the entire trail but that doesn't seem likely at this point.

I have gotten very active in trying to maintain and improve my lawn.  Just bought the place we're in now and it's pretty clear the previous owners didn't care much about it.  I have no idea what I'm doing but I'm learning as I go!

Learning how to play the guitar, banjo, and now the accordion. Also painting and gardening along with roasting my own coffee and making my own olives and last winter started carving my own canoe paddles. It is so cool to start with a big, rough plank of wood and end up with a beautiful custom paddle.

I read comic books, travel, and I have two cats. Before I was in law school (in my last year right now), I used to also used to travel a lot more frequently, and read about 10-15 novels a year in addition to the comic books. Hopefully I can get back to that after I pass the bar (well, after I pass both the CA and NY bar exams).

A lot of my hobbies come from my homebrewing addiction.  I roast coffee, make sausages, vinegar, and hope to finally make some cheese.  I love gardening, mostly fruit trees, veggies and of course hops, and I love cooking.    My wife and I travel as much as possible, and beer usually figures into our destination somehow.

I hear ya on the parenting.  Commuting is no big deal for me - I live less than 900 yards from work  ;D (I work in mapping, so yes, I measured it - about 800 metres including the driveway at work) and quite frequently walk - when I'm not driving kids to school or daycare.

Small town living rocks!  Pretty hard to see good live music, but I'm getting too old for that anyway  :-\

I have played soccer all my life, so I play indoor soccer in the fall and winter and try to get in an outdoor league in the spring and summer. I also play tennis, but can't seem to find anyone to play with.

I enjoy a good photo session in the park. I also enjoy dreaming about someday opening a small brewery/brewpub.  ::)

I would LOVE to get a nice mountain bike and get into that. My brother and I have talked about getting a two person scull for exercise.  I think that sounds like fun.

make sure you take lessons.  a lot of lessons.

I rowed for 6 years - it looks like its easy,  but to really make it enjoyable and get a good workout, you will need some coaching, some more than others.

Also, get on a concept II erg and row a few K and see how it is first  ;)

I rode my bike 3,400 miles this year.  I took three in-state bike tours and am considering a ride to Montana and back for 2010.  I do ride year round but am finding it hard to get out there this winter.

My wife and I bought a remodeled farm house on 20 acres with a trout stream in September.  It has some finishing work to do and I spend a couple of days a week up there.

It does have an extra garage that has a new roof, siding and is rewired.  That will be the Vance Creek Brewery within the next few years.

I am retired and volunteer some at my church.  In addition, I am on our local County Board of Supervisors.

All in all, life is good for the Rep.
