My LHBS is about an hour away. I am looking to find a place online with the best deals and cheapest shipping for grain. I have been purchaceing hops from www.freshops.com and am pleased with their prices and shipping, I'm just looking for something similar for grains.

Brewmasters Warehouse

Morebeer.com
Northernbrewer.com
midwestsupplies.com

LHBS (perfect brewing supply), unless its something specific, unavailable, and they can't get it. I have ordered hops on line from breworganic.com and listerman.com. My local homebrew club has also made bulk malt purchases from mid country malt.

I buy from the following:
countrymaltgroup.com
northernbrewer.com
hopsdirect.com
freshops.com
morebeer.com

x2 except I never ordered from country malt group. I have a couple LHBS now so they get 95% of my business.

Don't really have a LHBS that is worth squat. Buy most of my stuff from North COuntry Malt until recently - my source just dried up and I don't exactly know what I am going to do for bulk grain. Damnit!

huh? you can't get from NCM anymore?
-
I live about 15 minutes away from Mid Country Malt :D I buy my base malts there. I buy most of my specialty malts from Midwest. Their prices are good and they'll sell you half pounds of grain. Hops Direct and Freshops for my bulk hop orders, Midwest for the rest. Yeast as well.
My LHBS is about 40 minutes away and they cater more to wine makers. They're good for random equipment but I don't know how fast they turnover grain so I rarely buy ingredients from them.
-
I get my bulk grain from north country malt (and sometimes specialty malts if I need a few pounds when I happen to order a 55# sack)
hops direct for bulk hops. I try and support the LHBS when I can. He doesn't have a huge selection of specialty malts, but he has the basics.
Equipment and yeast I usually get from northern brewer

Yeah, but I used to go in on pallet orders and it was way, way, WAY cheaper than having to just order through them. A sack would rarely be over 35 bucks.

So you mean with shipping then?
Because I went in on a group buy and got a sack as low as $27. But we could pickup at the dock.(mid country)
The order was definitely not a pallet.

I do almost all of my purchasing through brewmasterswarehouse.net.
Good prices, great service, flat-rate shipping.
If I'm not shopping at BMW, I'm shopping at Austin Homebrew Supply, to which all of the above apply as well.

Yeah, cheap. 27-35 depending what we bought. A pallet can hold up to 42 sacks and was 127 or so to ship. Split up between several guys it is a great deal. I would order 6-10 sacks usually.

I placed an order there yesterday. I was also impressed with the prices and shipping.

Buying in bulk with a group purchase is ultimately going to save the most money. Unfortunately, that's probably not possible for some folks. What am I going to do with a pallet of 2 row in my garage... ;D
Any ideas? 8)

Buy a lot of mouse traps?

start drinking more to support your buying habit which supports your brewing habit?

Depending on the flat rate pallet price from NCM to you. You may only need to buy about 10 bags to save on the shipping.

My LHBS store which happens to be. highgravitybrew.com

I need to buy 5 bags shipped by FedEx to break even with Pallet.
-
I get all my stuff from the Grape and Granary in Akron, OH. But now that I'm in upstate NY I'm looking for a new place. I may try Doc's over in Binghamton. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Forgive me here, I'm trying to figure out what you guys are talking about? Bags shipped Fed Ex from NCM?

Yeah, they ship FedEx ground but it aint cheap, about $25/shipping per sack.
Sucks that your source dried up.
Are there any other local brewers that could get you to 20 sacks on a skid?
With you buying 10 thats halfway there.
-
No, there is a local homebrew club but I have not had contact with them in some time. nice guys, don't get me wrong. It's just that "local" for me is still 30+ minutes away and I am not in the loop with them at all any more (haven't been to a meeting in over 2+ years.) And they don't order regularly - for me that means I need an order once every 4 - 6 months or so. They order just whenever....
The closest homebrew shop to me that sells in bulk in Rebelbrewer and they are over 2 hours a way - and much more expensive (46 bucks per sack for Rahr - I was getting Best Pils and TF MO for less than that.
Still, I'll probably make the drive up there in the next couple of weeks as I need pils malt.
-
Hell, even if you go 10 or 12 sacks at a time its about $10/sack shipping
Probably cheaper than most of your other options............of course its a big nut at around $550
Get you some plastic barrels to store them in, no worries with the mices
I have one in my basement and it holds 5 full sacks of grain if I put them in there correctly.
-
I usually get about 6-10 sacks at a time and keep them in Rubbermaid containers. (Still have mice though, hard to keep them out of a country house.) I will certainly look into it. Looks like I'll be paying 500 bucks rather than 350 or so though. Bummer.
-
BTW, looking at the site I see the homebrewers link but they only sell by the pound. Where are you guys ordering by the sack and having shipped to a residential address?

Click on the product and get to the product page.
Let say Best Pils:

Then you can pick by the pound or by the bag.

Thanks man. I don't know why I couldn't figure that out!!! :-\

Their website is little confusing :D

Well, now it says I can't order more than 150 lbs. Maybe they have changed since you guys ordered last. I know you used to be able to down load the bulk malt catalog and now you have to have a pass word.

You've got mail
Yeah, the site is hella confusing until you've been through it a few times
They have bulk hops too Keith.................. do I hear $600 :P
-
LHBS more often than not. Place is just too rad to not patronize. Prices are decent, selection is damn good, and hell, I get to drink while I'm there.

keith
order sacks 1 at a time. the shipping is cheaper that way.
the reason you can't buy more than 150 is that is their limit with Fedex.
just order your three sacks separately.
it might be easier to pick up the phone and call them - the website is like banging your head against the wall sometimes.
cheers!

LHBS (was there today)
North Country Malt Group (was there today)
Austin Homebrew Supply (UPS dropped an order off today)
Hops Direct (in the freezer)
Northern Brewer
Midwest Supplies
Haven't yet tried Brewmasters Warehouse, but will.

I buy base malts from a brewpub-I just paid $102 for 4 sacks. I buy bulk hops from HopUnion and Hops Direct. Pretty much everything else comes from morebeer.com since there's a crappy LHBS 200 miles from here and a decent one 300 miles from here
-
order sacks 1 at a time. the shipping is cheaper that way.

Also, you can play around with how many bags of specialty grains you can tack on to a sack a grain before the fedex rate jumps to the "heavy rate".

I was wrong about hopunion. I ordered hops from 3 different places last month and I thought one of them was hopunion. I looked at their website so the name stuck in my mind.
-
I am lucky to have Niagara Tradition Homebrew just up the street. (www.nthomebrew.com). They have a very strong internet and phone in shipping business. A very large selection of malts and hops. They also have a very knowledgeable staff.
-
Usually LHBS, but they are still charging $4.25 oz. for hops
Hops-Freshhops, Hopsdirect and my garden.
Sometimes N.B. for sanitizers, and usually throw in some yeast and misc. to make shipping worthwhile.
Last night, I put in an order to Brewmasters. I just didn't feel like making the 2.5 hour round trip to LBHS.
I kinda feel bad about that, as I like to buy local as much as possible.
With Brewmasters flat rate shipping including full bags of base malt, it really turned out cheaper.
-
I shop around and sometimes get ingredients along with equipment items and so have bought from:
2 LHBS
Hops Direct
MoreBeer - gets a bulk of my money
Midwest
Northern Brewer
Grape and Granary
Austin Homebrew
Adventures in Homebrewing
EC Kraus
My biggest problem is having to pay LHBS malt sack prices, due to a lack of homebrew clubs or other resources for group grain buys.
-
I hit up a local Ace Hardware store in Yakima. Sells sacks of grain for low prices. Small bags(1-10lbs) aren't too bad but there is a great selection of bulk(50-55lbs). 2 Row for only $38.
-
I am lucky to live in a town that has a malting company downtown. It used to be an old Olvoltine company. Just a quick phone call and I am good to go. Cash only. $47.50 Can for 55 lbs.
-
I too buy my sacks of grain from our local brewpub (Big Daddy Brewing). Usually pay around $27-$30 depending on variety and he never charges for shipping. Nice setup there! We do have a LHBS, but every time I leave there with just a few things, I feel as though I've been violated :-[. Very expensive ($9 for yeast, $3.99 for hops, expensive grain prices). As far as ordering online, which I do alot of, I've come to really like Rebelbrewer.com in Nashville, TN. Great prices, shipping and customer service.
-
I buy sacks of malt and odds and ends from my LHBS. I also order some items from northern brewer or more beer
