Title: Forgot to crush extract grains. What efficiency do I have?
Post by: Lazy Ant Brewing on August 02, 2014, 03:08:28 PM
Newbie screwup.
I forgot to crush my extract grains which account for about 9% of grain bill.

Does anyone have a clue as to how much it effects the efficiency?  Should I assume I got 40% or 20% of the sugars or even less?  I still have the opportunity to add some dry malt as I'll be starting my boil soon.

Please advise.

Thanks

Hard to say. You could take a gravity reading towards the end of the boil and add DME if needed at that point.

How much grain was there and what type?  It may not make much difference at all.

Yes ^^^ relax, you have plenty of time to add the extract if you want to get closer to your intended gravity. Mash extract efficiency estimates are based on 100% conversion ,  you will max out at just over 91% conversion. So multiply your expected efficiency by .91- ie  .91 * .8=72.8% efficiency. But it depends on those speciality grains as they are lower in sugars and can very a lot by type as Denny has alluded.

I doubt you'll notice. When steeping grains for an extract beer, most of the color and flavor you want to extract is in the husk material anyway.

I'm sure it's way too late now, but you could always crush the grains as best you can and steep them again.

I think you guys are right on.  The water I used for extraction did color up.  I added
some extra dry malt extract and my OG finished at 1.062, a fraction higher than I had intended.

I'll keep my fingers crossed until it's fermented, bottle-conditioned and chilled.

BREW ON!

Thanks again.
