Homebrew Con? Find it a little embarrassing?
Sure, we're a bunch of dorky, beer geeks, but did we need to make it this obvious?

You read my mind...when I saw that today, I thought "WTF?". There was nothing wrong with the previous name...why change it?
OK, here's a campaign promise...if I am elected to the GC in the current election, I will work to eliminate this embarrassment! ;)
-
Kinda tumbles off the tongue, doesn't it. Come on folks, it's the NHC.
Why throw away that brand?

I wish I could vote for you a second time because of that.

While I think it's a lame name, I feel that it should have a different name to prevent confusion between NHC the conference and NHC the competition.

How about giving the comp a new name?
-
Amanda will tell you I've been b*tching about the name for two weeks now.
...Whatev. It is the people that make it the best; that hasn't changed.

I am indifferent to which, but feel one should be changed.

Meh...the final round of the competition is judged at the conference, so I'm not sure how many people get confused about it.

I've heard that argument, but to me, they are so closely intertwined that they're no need to differentiate.
But if you must . . . How about IHC, since "International" entries are excepted in the competition?
-
I dunno, I always thought it was weird to have one acronym with two meanings for basically the same event.

I got the email today and was too embarrassed by the term "Homebrew Con" that I didn't even let it languish in my inbox. I deleted it. And I delete almost nothing.
I hope they change it back for 2017. I will tell no one that I'm going to "homebrew con" - ugh. It's NHC, thank you very much.

Alright - that settles it. I'm voting for Denny.

Sorry folks, but NHC stands for at least a couple of things in our world. National Homebrew Contest and National Homebrewers Conference. We got tired of confusing these things and frankly, we wanted to freshen the convention perception. Therefore, you now have HomebrewCon. Yes, it is geeky, but its our new moniker.

I agree with the reasoning, disagree with the victim.
Edit - I just contradicted myself. Maybe I just really don't like that name.

How about National Competition of Homebrewers?

Yep. Though I will still say NHC for a few years out of habit.

I for one like the new title! Kudos!
By the way I think Kudos is the word used by command staff when proposing a toast with Romulan Ale, which by the way is made with 100% pale quatrotricticale, and never ever step mashed.

I'd love to hear what said perception is, and what "freshen" means, specifically
-
Jim... you handcuff cons right? at least escaped cons?
I have never liked "Con" because of the convict association... but I maybe the only person that feels that way. I guess it is slightly better that "Convent"... but that might be slightly fun for NHC.

Perhaps some club will do a "CONfessional" theme booth at club night. Hafta step inside and admit you "occasionally like me a few Natty Lights" before you're given the good Mead.

Why not AHA Conference like the website if we're going to rename it?

Con always means convention in terms of Comic-con, dragon-con, etc. etc. Since this has always been the National Homebrewers Conference I think they just misused the term.

+1. Isn't part of being geeky using proper terminology?
-
I saw the subject line and thought it was some new, unrelated conference. Since there's no way I'd have time for that (at least this year), I deleted it without reading it!
-
The local organizers gave the AHA a lot of grief over it too. It doesn't help that Otakon and BronyCon (conVENTIONs) are also held here. The association is embarrassing. :)

CON!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll admit to drinking Natty if it means I get the good mead. 8)

I think we might need that made into a t-shirt... but would probably get sued.

At least until I get back on GC.....I'm mot convinced NHC needed a new name, but if it did, Homebrewcon ain't it.

"Don't I deserve a year off?" he said...I think we've seen what happens when we let Denny have his way. We should appoint "Denny HomebrewConn" for life! 8)

I've tried helping various volunteer groups in the past and I fully understand how frustrating it can be. You do something fairly benign to help and it can seem like all you get for it is sour grapes. Im in the cheap seats on this one because ive not been to HB Con yet. Having said that, I wonder if they polled the idea first. Seems like it would have been pretty easy to send out a random sample poll.
Honestly though, is Hombrew Con something so hideous that we need to get all lathered up over it? I say... ABSOLUTELY! Being overcome by righteous indignation is what being an AMERICAN homebrewer is all about. First they came for my stirplate and I said nothing. They they took my 90 min boil, and still I said nothing. But I will not go quietly into the night! I will not go to a Homebrew Con without a fight! I will shout "NHC, NHC, NHC!" with all my might! My god man, where will our traditions be if we fail to do the same things we always do?
My name is Klickitat Jim, and I approve this message
Not really, im actually fine calling it whatever.

Are you running under the name Denny "Don't call it Homebrew" Conn? ;)
Edit: I see that udub (kind of) beat me to the "pun"ch. I thought of this hours ago, I swear!

If we don't, we might end up facing the wrath of Conn. (I tried…)
On that note, I'm honestly considering some sort of star trek shirt to wear to the event in a sort of protest...

Oh, the possibilities!
Edit - if someone has good photoshop skills, a T-shirt with Denny's face, and Kahn's torso, and some logo/meme, is something I would pay money for. Yes I would.
-
HomebrewCon will attract the youngsters. You could shorten it to HBC if you don't like the long version.

In a heartbeat! Sounds hilarious.

I don't think it's legal to market to 16 year olds.

Well, I b****ed about this on the latest podcast. It'll be out next Wed.

I might take a stab at that t-shirt. Would make a funny as hell photo with Denny at
NHC Homebrew Conn.

Any profits should go to the Charity of Denny's choice.

Nooo ... that's the Society for Prevention of Decoction Mashing. I joke, I kid.

We do have an official charity for the podcast - Freedom Service Dogs of America.
Just saying...

I have not tackled the podcasts yet, on my list. Oh- a worthy cause indeed.

Amanda and I were lamenting Dennis Hopper is not still around to re-film the Blue Velvet "Pabst Blue Ribbon!" scene for us.
"What's your beer conference called?"
"Homebrew Con"
"HOMEBREW CON?! F*** THAT S***! N! H! C!"
;D
(Just having fun, think the name and reasons for change are silly, that's all. No real harm done.)
Cheers--

Like Steve I get the logic but disagree with the result.
One of the intended goals of calling something wordCon is to make a shorter name. HomebrewCon is longer to write than NHC and the same number of syllables. If going down this path was truly desirous then BrewCon would have made far more sense.
-
I saw the email last night and when I read the new name I thought "ugh" and made a face like that of an 8-year old who'd just been served a plate of liver & onions with brussel sprouts.
-
Ok, so, do our beers still get to go to the NHC? ???

National Homebrew Competition. Yes.

You guys are a stitch! Klickitat Jim for King...and I want one of those Conn shirts.
-
I would like to thank all involved with the registration process. It worked! No problems at all. Competition entry went well too..... Are we getting our act together or what? ;)
-
re: "CON" logo...I guess we are too cool to color between the lines. or is the "off-center" beer in the glass a nod to Sam/DFH?
*shrug*
process was very smooth, thx.
cheers--

Agreed...very smooth and looking forward to a great conference. I see the AHA Forum meetup is on the schedule for Friday. I assume details will be worked out as we get closer.
FWIW...I passed on the T-shirt. Not a fan of the "Con" thing.
