Title: Where am I?
Post by: homoeccentricus on July 17, 2016, 10:41:52 am
Just for fun. I want country and city. This is hint #1.

Draft Helles!

Well the obvious would be Deutschland, Munchen. But it can't be that easy, right?

Obviously not. But they do serve Helles.

I found no GPS meta data in your photo. Good job.

PS. My guess is Belgium, Antwerp in your living room.

Edit: I guess Tapatalk scrubs GPS data from photos automatically. I can't find it in any pics on the forum.

If the answer isn't Munich Germany, I have no idea. Ok, I'll guess - Bruges Belgium ? Vienna Austria?

There is not one glass of draft Helles to be found in Belgium, I'm pretty sure of that. And I found the draft Helles literally on the day of arrival, so it must be relatively common. But it's not Austria either.

Nope. Try to find the country first. The city is much much more difficult than that. l guess too difficult for Muricans. This picture is NOT a hint but posted to make some of you jealous.

PS. There's Helles on draft in the Yellowhammer State, too. You can guess which brewery.

Cologne, Germany?   :)

I had an Aecht Schlenkerla Helles on draft the other day.  Where was I?  If you went to HomebrewCON, you can probably guess.

Not exactly traditional, but there's no smoke malt in the beer, just residual left on their equipment and yeast.

That's pretty amazing. I've only had one, and it was noticeably smoky. Not off-putting,  but definitely there.

All the traveling around Europe drinking beer

Slight exaggeration :) Within a 40 miles radius from where I live I can visit Bosteels, Westmalle, De Koninck, 3F, Cantillon, Boon, Duvel, Het Anker, De Proefbrouwerij, etc.

[EDIT] Plus fool around with more than a quarter of the world production of beer ;)

Good job! The first shot was Idaho Falls Brewing Company specifically.

Idaho Falls has potatoes, Idaho National Laboratory, an LDS temple (Fig 2), the Snake River with very nice water falls downtown, and 2 breweries. I tried both breweries.  Both were good. I am glad I visited.

Yes, d*mn you, again too easy :(

Here was the line-up: http://brouwerijdemolen.nl/en/borefts-beerfestival/brewer-and-beers/

The theme was Kellerbier, so a number of breweries brewed one for the festival. I tried a number of them, and I can definitely say none of them had the "it"-factor ;)

Had my first Latvian and Russian brews. Let's be gentle and say they were "interesting".

Other interesting beers were the sour ales from Cascade Brewing. Does anyone know them? Are they at the top of the beer chain in the US?
Title: Re: Where am I?

Yes, Cascade makes great sours here in the US! Strong in the lactobacillus dept.

Then there must be something fundamentally wrong with me :( I started the day at noon with a glass of Hunahpu, which was very nice indeed. Then the remainder of the day I drank nothing to my liking except for De Molen 30 grams IPA, which does indeed contain 30 grams per liter, and Narke Kaggen Stormaktsporter with raspberry. I could not even enjoy the Cascade sour ales, although I'm a sourhead. My friends found them awesome :(
Title: Re: Where am I?

Was your pallete already trashed?  I too find it hard to switch to sours after a good amount of drinking.

Was your pallete already trashed?  I too find it hard to switch to sours after a good amount of drinking.

It's a complete mystery. Surely it can't have been the Austrian Kellerbier without "it", the Italian watermelon rind Berliner Weisse, the sahti, another Kellerbier without "it", or a Swedish vanilla cider. I ditched them all after a few sips...
Title: Re: Where am I?
Post by: narvin on September 25, 2016, 12:43:13 pm
I will say that American sours can be more tannic since they use relatively new barrels. Not like Oud Beersel or Cantillon.
Title: Re: Where am I?
Post by: homoeccentricus on September 25, 2016, 01:57:31 pm
I think my palate gets an overdose quite easily, especially after a series of extreme beers/ciders. At some point it seems to give up and finds nothing very pleasant anymore. My friends don't seem to have that problem even if they drink much more than me. Or maybe at some point they find anything pleasant...

This goes against everything I believe in, but
.. these beers are excellent  :)

Seriously though, I don't get gritty or yeasty at all.  They are cloudy but very clean with maybe the tiniest hint of rustic graininess.  A true American farmhouse IPA.  The hops have enough bitterness to stand up to the flavor.  Very nice.

No, afaik the lambic doesn't get more sour in the box. Timmermans is like that. Girardin lambic, for instance, is not so sour in a box. The lambic simply spoils after some time (two months or so?).

Steven Pauwels is the head brewer at Boulevard.  There are plenty of good Tank 7 clone recipes on the Internet. The problem is Steven brought over a proprietary strain from Belgium, they filter it, then carbonate tank 7 with champagne yeast.  I believe Boulevard even published a homebrew recipe for tank seven.

There's one in this thread supposedly from Pauwels himself:
http://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?s=b81f24965f12a5addaec13a8d7b5ed3c&t=250256&page=2

Do some more searching and there's another from Jeremy Danner, another Boulevard brewer.   It may even be in the same thread.

If brewing this one could likely use T-58 as they use that to bottle condition some of their beer.

Okay train back on rails.

Good enough! A tankovna pub with Pilsner Urquell, in Prague. So, fresh, unpasteurized beer straight from the brewery. The beer tastes quite a bit more caramelly than the regular stuff.

What a relief, after all those diacetyl lagers ;)

Awesome. Silly question - can you buy malt by the bag there, or do you need to buy from a shop or wholesaler?

I was there with a friend (nano brewer) who bought 4 sacks of 25 kg, so yes it's possible. Not sure if you are a hobby brewer.

Yep. For me best beer I have tasted during this trip, after Weihenstephaner.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170910/9b4e6d4b039642e3ec9afa5366df6ab4.jpg)
Which Kölsch brewery is your favorite? Might be in Kölsch next year.

If you are in Kölsch next year you will be in trouble ;) but if you are in Köln you might want to visit Paffgen and Peters. I also visited Fruh and Malzmuhle but found them not as good. And stay away from the bottles, I thinkth they are not worth it.

How did that typo happen? Dang.

Thanks for the recommendations.

"A beer may taste extra special because of the feel of the table where you’re sitting. It may be better because of the beauty of the historic old building and the friendly locals. Perhaps the warm weather, the comfortable clothes you’re wearing, and the extra Euros you discovered in your pocket help it taste really good, too! Everything that affects you affects your perception and ultimately your enjoyment of any beer. Perhaps, in the end, there isn’t anywhere else in the world that a Kölsch will taste as good as it did that special day in Cologne, but one never knows what unique joy the next beer moment may bring. So, make the most of each moment and enjoy each beer as if it were completely unique, because in reality it is unique to you and the moment you are enjoying." J. Zainasheff

'Special feelings' aside, there was a pretty good article on Kölsch in the May/June '17 issue of Zymurgy.  Cheers to 'special feelings'.

If you get the chance, also go to Düsseldorf, to Uerige, but also to Schlüssel, which I found even better than Uerige. And when you're there eat some Handkäse (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handk%C3%A4se) - you'll be thankful for the caraway seeds to mask the flavor ;)

I have been to Düsseldorf many times and know all of the Altbier breweries in tha Altstadt. Last time we stopped at Schumacher's tap, Schlüssel, and Uerige. Uerige is my favorite, but that is my taste.

I lived in Hesse, so I know Handkäse mit Musik a few times. My German friends always said the music comes later.  ;)

Edit - we went to Köln (fixed the autocorrect this time), but concentrated on the museums and the Dom. Only have been to a few Kölsch breweries. Früh always had a big line at the door, so we passed.
