Ha!  Bet you're chomping at the bit for them to release your Munich lager II, huh?

Actually, I do becasue I chose them!  In honor of Experimental Brewing being the #1 hobby podcast, they're letting us pick the strains for the whole year!  I don't know if I can tell you yet, but I can say this....April 7 is Session Beer Day and we're big supporters of that so we picked strains that would make good session beers for it.

Very cool on both counts!

How in the heck can we plan our next quarter's brews without this information?  :)

Agreed.  Hopefully they'll release it soon.  But plan on British ales and especially session beers.  Simple, see?

Sounds great to me! Though meanwhile I'll stick with 1469.

Ya, I think my slants have been in the fridge for about 9 months. It will be a good test of my skills I guess... I'll be brewing my first lagers of the season in about a month.

That's so cool Denny! I just might have to do a couple milds to celebrate that!

Way to go Denny and Drew!

I have a sneaky suspicion that some rare English ale and German weissbier strains are not going to be forthcoming.  :(

Yes indeed. I have a best bitter and a mild on my next ten beers to brew list.

Jim, if you have a source for Imperial yeast, their L17 Harvest lager is the same strain as Wyeast Munich Lager II, and available year-round.

Hard to beat 1318 for me. Great top cropper. Top cropping is so much fun, I wish you could do it for lagers too.

Not without mail order. I have a hard time not using Wyeast because they are so close to home. Local and fresh. As to the 2352, it's all good. It's an excuse to use my alcohol lamp and loop.

Imperial is portland based. I'm sure you can find it somewhere when you venture out on the bike.

OK, I just got the email from Wyeast so I can spill the beans....

We are collaborating with homebrew icons and top-rated hobby podcasters Denny Conn and Drew Beechum to bring you the Wyeast Private Collection strains for 2017. We are kicking off the year with some of our favorite British-style strains in honor of The Session Beer Project founded by Lew Bryson. If you’re not already familiar, The Session Beer Project – and Session Beer Day on April 7th – is a globally recognized effort to popularize and support the brewing and enjoyment of session beers. Anything coming in at 4.5% ABV or less and crafted for easy drinking without compromising flavor are the basic guidelines for a great session ale. Let’s raise a pint to these thirst-quenching brews!

Why isn't session beer day 4/5? If we are just using arbitrary dates, pi day is now 3/18

1882 sounds similar 1469 except for the diacetyl.  Do you know the sources of 1882 and 1768?  I love 1462 and plan on doing a Timothy Taylor Landlord clone for session beer day but I'm open to trying a different yeast.  Edit: that is if one of them makes the cut of course.

I pulled some cells from a couple slants of 2352 that I made around 10 months ago. They've been in a zip lock bag in the kitchen fridge since then. After about 36 hrs there was a nice layer of white in the bottom of my 20ml starters. I stepped them up to 200ml just now. I had also taken a sample and streaked a plate. So far so good. I don't see anything but fresh little white colonies. Nice to know even a goof like me can keep a strain alive.

Wyeast says it's good to 9%.

Reading the descriptions of the 3 upcoming PCs, I think I'll give 1026 a shot on a session bitter and session stout. I've got a bunch of golden promise, some roasted and flaked barley, and a few English hops. Target, challenger, and EKG I think

Might not work then, luckily it will be a bit before I do this so there's time to do a bit more research.

I have yet to meet a yeast that cannot exceed the yeast lab's reported max ABV if managed properly, and generally by a considerable amount.

A fresh slurry coming off a 1.060ish beer from most brewing strains will do just fine on a 1.100 beer as long as you oxygenate well.

I agree with Eric.  The Wyeast recommendations tend to be pretty conservative.  You need a healthy big pitch and plenty of oxygenation and you should be fine.

So... how quickly are these Platinum Collection yeasts available?  I am brewing on 1-1-17 with my neighborhood group for our annual kick off brew day, so I suppose they won't be available that early, right?

A nice bitter sounds like a great choice anytime./

Just a guess, but probably not.  Ask your LHBS.
