Title: Eddie from Massachusetts->New to AHA
Post by: ED3 on September 10, 2017, 06:51:08 PM
Hello everyone my name is Eddie and I've been born, raised and currently reside just outside of Boston.

A little background on me and how I got into home brewing and my interested regarding brewing:

My dad use to home brew when I was growing up and when I was able to buy a home brewing kit, about 6 years ago, I started brewing and became obsessed once I realized how applicable the topics I was learning as an undergrad were to my new hobby. I received my undergraduate degree in biochemistry and my master's this past Spring in cellular and molecular biology with both degrees' terminal theses having to do with yeast genetics  of brewing yeasts. I may go back to finish my PhD in the next year or two because I am absolutely obsessed with any science involving beer and actively conduct various personal research projects on beer and yeasts.

I wanted to get more active in the home brewing community and started joining some of the online forums to share some insight I've gained from the experiments I've conducted, to make connections and to share the personal research I have done and am currently preparing to do with anyone that might find it useful. I look forward to engaging with you all on the forums and sharing my projects with you.

Here are a few more tidbits about me:

Do you have a homebrewing disaster you'd like to share?

The first time I ever put fruit into a beer, every one of my fermenters blew their tops off and splattered raspberries to the ceiling of my basement.

What was the first beer you ever brewed?  How did it turn out?
The first beer I ever brewed was an amber ale that used extracts and came with the home brew kit I purchased. It turned out great!

Do you have a favorite homebrew trick or gadget that you've found to make your beer better/brewing easier, etc?
My world changed when I finally purchased an RO/DI system

Describe your brew system.
I have a MoreBeer! Low Rider v4 and built a temperature controlled, wood and foam box to ferment in (I use 1/2bbl sanke kegs to ferment when I brew on this system).

How frequently do you brew (times/month or /year)?
I try and brew once a month but can usually fit in two brews

What is your favorite hop? Why?
Columbus, I can always make them work in my recipes it seems.

What's the most unusual ingredient you've ever used in a brew?
Either mushrooms or boughs from evergreens

Do you brew alone, with friends or with someone you live with?
I brew alone and with a friend or two from time to time.

Are you an indoor or outdoor brewer?
I brew in a garage and can open the doors when the weather cooperates.

Sounds like you're living the dream!  I have yet to add shrooms to beer, but our local brewery did a Roggenbier with some morels in it that was quite good.  I think Denny has the best name for a mushroom beer though, a Wee Heavy he calls Wee Shroomy :)
