Title: Where are you?
Post by: denny on August 23, 2010, 03:46:23 PM
I'd like to ask people to put their location into their profile.  It kinda makes things a bit more personalized, and helps brewers near each other to get together if the want to.  Kinda like the old Rennerian coordinates in HBD!

To do this, go into your profile and click on "Forum Profile Information".  Then you can add your location info to either your personal text or signature.  Don't use the "Location" box...for some unknown reason, your location won't show up if you do that.

Oh wait, I've had my location in my profile. Bah!

Hmmm...  I put my location in my profile a couple of days ago, but it doesn't show up under my avatar like I see it for others. Do we see our own posts differently, or is there something I needed to click?

The "Location" field doesn't seem to show up.  I have my location in the "Personal Text" field.

Svejk - you need to put it in the "personal text" field.  I tried to edit that, and had to relearn where to change it.  Let me see if it works now...

It worked.

Did that a good while back.  It really does help to see where people are.

I like the idea Denny.  Always interesting to see where people are located.

I've revised my profile to include New Brunswick, NJ:  home of Rutgers University, and home of the legendary Old Bay (back in the late 1980's  through the 90's it was highly regarded as  the destination for great beer for the whole tri-state area, thanks to the efforts of the late Chris Demitri)

I agree, maybe there should be a check box for you to "display location" and then it would automagically get included from the location field instead of the personal text field.

I've moved several times in the past few years, and I don't expect this location to be more than one or two years, but right now I live in Davis, California (where I went to college from 2002-2005). My girlfriend is getting her teaching credential and M.A. here for the next 1-2 years. For those who don't know California, that's 15 miles west of Sacramento and 75 miles east of San Francisco.

Hey, the Ann Arbor Brewers Guild (AABG) has been together since 1986 on just that basis!  We are up to 120 members, and are still creative anarchists.  No real officers, and if someone suggests a project, he or she gets to organize it.  We've done dozens of projects that way, from State Fair judging to bourbon or wine barrel fills to Big Brews.

Glad you're making it work that way, too.

I think the Portland economy is enough to keep Californians away - those of us who aren't at retirement age. That's what made me leave. Maybe some of them are moving to Seattle instead (frankly, I liked Seattle better, anyway).

Ah yes...Iowa City!   I spent quite a few lost weekends both there as well as Ames, back in the early 70's (both the parties and the music scene there were usually better than where I was going to school in Storm Lake).   The weekends were a bit of a fog, but I did almost always make it back to Stormy Creek in time for Monday classes.
Fun times they were.
I managed to get back to IA for a visit a few years ago, for the first time in more than 25 years.  Amazing to me how much things have changed out there since my time there  in 1970!

Well, I had to remove my location from my profile and may soon have to abandon all of my forum accounts because of a new policy in our school district regarding internet representation/fraternization.  Yes, I know that it is not lawful but as a teacher, if I want to avoid a costly (for my professional reputation) legal battle, I will have to comply.  I would love to post my location again but let's just say that if you are ever around exit 107 on I-80 in Wyoming, look me up.  I may not post much but I learn a ton by lurking.

Thanks,

I live half way between Kea`au and Pahoa.  Highway 130 goes by here, but it has become a very long dead end since Kilauea covered the road with lava in Kalapana.  Only one way in and out now. If you went out to the lava ocean entry viewing area in Kalapana you passed by my neighborhood.

Yeah, tsunami Saturday was a weird one. Not our usual weekend fare!  I stayed home, worked in my hives and let it happen without me. My house is not in the tsunami evacuation area.

No giant "harbor waves" here, but we did get some serious surging.  A local TV station set up a camera on the balcony of a bayfront hotel in Hilo.  It was pointed at Coconut Island.  We got to watch live video of the ocean surging in and out.  That was very cool.  All in all it was a good test of the Pacfic Tsunami Warning System and Hawaii County Civil Defense.  I felt for the people in Chile where the monster earthquake hit.  Nothing good ever happens when the earth moves that much.

We didn't make it to the viewing area.  We really wanted to, but we were staying in Kailua (walking distance to Kona BC) and leaving the next day.  The original plan had been to do the loop and maybe stay in Hilo Satuday night, but that didn't happen because of the waves.  So we basically had to do the loop in one day and skipped some stuff we had planned.  Plus by the time we got to the turnoff to go to Kalapana there was a torrential downpour that made driving less fun.

We were in the evac zone, but apparently high enough (third floor) that we didn't have to evacuate.  We did, and spent most of the day camped on the side of the road with a lot of other refugees watching the surge come in and out at Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort.  You could see the alcove totally emptying and then filling up more than it had been previously.

Funny coincidence - we met one of the organizers for the Kona Brewers Festival, she as standing near us sharing some shade.  We had a nice talk about beer. :)

When staying in Kailua it is best to stay within staggering distance of Kona Brewing Co.  I'm glad you got there.  Goooood beer and food.  Castaway IPA!

Ah yes, welcome to the windward side.  Love those tradewinds!  We get 180" of rain a year at my house.  No rain - no rain forest.  Up on the windward slope of Mauna Kea they get 260" rain per year.

Great beer and food, it was awesome.  We went three times, once the first night we were there, another day for a tour, and then for a quick beer on our way to the airport.  We really wanted to hang out there for the tsunami since they seemed to be just out of the evacuation zone, but they closed so their staff could go home and evacuate their families.  Which I totally understand, but man it would have been nice to just sit there for several hours sampling beers and watching the waves on TV.

It was really an insane downpour to be driving in, we could barely see with the wipers full blast.  We have our rainforests too, but they average more like 150" per year and they're a few hours away, I don't live there :)  We would have stopped in Hilo and we even drove by Mehana Brewing but since it was Sunday it was closed.  Everything was closed.  Next time.

I'm not sure when next time will be for being back on the Big Island, but we're talking about burning some frequent flyer miles and going to Maui in April . . . I'm sure it will be awesome, there's breweries there.   ;D

Hi everyone! Figured this would be the best place for my first post.

I'm in Lewiston, Idaho.

Been brewing for about 14 years and switched to all grain and kegging this winter.  Just needed an "excuse" to buy lots of new equipment and toys!

Can you please tell me why they call it Wormtown?
Title: Re: Where are you?
Post by: Steve on April 06, 2011, 04:42:08 PM
The term Wormtown was coined by WCUW rock dj  L.B. Worm  (http://wurn.net/staff.html#LB) as a reference to the music scene back in 1980 for the music counterculture and underground music scene of Worcester to rally around.  it was a "A lovely little kingdom where the kids were allright, it was ok to be different, and original thought was abundant."

Radio stations WCUW, WICN and WDOA were big into free form rock.   Wormtown.org  (http://www.wormtown.org/) still highlights the music scene in Worcester.  Ralph's Diner and the Ship Room still presetn a lot of "underground" music.

WICN is now an NPR station with an all jazz and folk format. WCUW is still a community station with ethnic programming, much like WWOZ in NOLA and  WDOA lives on as a website (http://www.wdoa.com/B)  Look into these sites if your interested!

My wife was a part of that scene back-in-the-day.  Two years ago the Wormtown Brewery opened here in Worcester, but he follows the rules.  I'd like to think of some of us at the "Mashpit Homebrewers" as the real "Wormtown" counter culture brewers.

Thanks for asking!

The power plant that I worked at had 1650MW (1.65GW) of generating capacity.  They've added another 350MW unit since I left.
It won't fit into a DeLorean though.   ;)

Calculus derivatives?  Betting on the changing value of dental plaque?!  GROSS!!!

But, but... for a function with a single real variable, the derivative of the funtion at a point is the slope of the tangent to the graph of the function at that point.

While updating my location I noticed all of the spaces for AIM, YIM, ICQ, etc. How about throwing in Twitter or FB handles/addresses?

I'd like to ask people to put their location into their profile.  It kinda makes things a bit more personalized, and helps brewers near each other to get together if the want to.  Kinda like the old Rennerian coordinates in HBD!

To do this, go into your profile and click on "Forum Profile Information".  Then you can add your location info to either your personal text or signature.  Don't use the "Location" box...for some unknown reason, your location won't show up if you do that.

Just found this link again via Tapatalk, so I am in Hidden Valley Lake, IN. I have lived here for almost 3 years now and I am still trying to get used to the idea that even though I am in a different state, I am in "Greater Cincinnati."
